As (just) a newbie to the series
This is what I found in the gameplay. The core of Ace Combat is a blast. At first, both control and the number of on-screen prompts can be a bit overwhelming, but the experience is deep and rewarding.
The enemy AI is clever and knows how to react FAST, there is a constant feeling of unpredictability whenever you have an enemy in your sights.
That is where DFM (DogFight Mode) comes into play. (Imho) it manages to be exhilarating in spite of the fact it also - apparently - eases things up a bit. Personally, I really like firing my vulcan while in this mode.
ASM (Air Strike Mode) provides a set route to take ground targets out efficiently with added benefits to your aircraft. If anything, it is not too intrusive.
The gunner sections seem like a nod to FPS. They are not exactly "bad" per se but I find them a bit boring and unfit for this game. A minor blemish in this otherwise excellent title. Can't wait to try it out in co-op! =D

Great Aerial Combat
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon has improved heaps from its previous installments & this addition is one of its best yet. Graphics & planes looked great. Once you start playing, you will feel the adrenaline rush engaging with the enemies.

Awesome flight sim

Entertaining, fast-paced
Certainly a change in direction from previous titles, especially (4, 5 and Zero). The story is still quality, yet more grounded on reality than previous entries. All in all, a very good game.

Intense action on every mission given, great for who seeking actions and not to focus on flight simulation. Online combat experience with team or against other player and raising points to buy skill and collect trophy is the most fun part of the game.

It does not disappoint...
Just as good as the previous Ace Combat, now even better with the new dog fight system. Gameplay is a lot of fun, while the story is nothing to write home about. AC4 still remains my favorite AC when it comes to the story, I think.

But the dog fight mode is bit cheat anyway. The cheat is both ways, if you play hard difficulty, enemy aircrafts use dog fight mode almost make certain missions impossible to finish without getting hit.

Excellent game with the best combat simulation mechanics until now... very common and bad story (good americans -bad russian mercenaries) but with over the top all the other elements (grafics , music, control, gameplay)

I have to admit, A lot of element has been improve, dog fight, missile, flares etc
However,
Unlikely previous game,
This game is base on real world not a fictional world.
and to me, major critical point change is player role.
previous game, player is most likely start from 'rookie' fighter pilot, or no name mercenary.
and than along with complete various mission, he become more and more famous.
some of player like these setting (including me).
But assault horizon, player start form colonel (Bishop) with some formidable skill.
so it lack or feeling of character growth,
and since a lot of new thing improve, there are fewer mission compare to previous game.
I have to ration this game into 2 part
Game Engine : 8.5/10 (Close ground dog-fight is too fixed, same plane same route same building destroyed, so it's not new engine, just new art)
Story setting : 6/10

Excellent evolution of the series
A lot of people will complain about the new mechanics but after sticking with it for a week I can honestly say it's a huge improvement over previous games.
The missions are varied and quite challenging (but not frustratingly so) on Ace difficulty setting. Multiplayer is an absolute blast and this is where the new game mechanics really shine - against other players. The new lobby system is also a massive improvement over ACE6.
I can see myself playing this game for quite some time ^^

I call this an AERIAL WARFARE game, because this is simply not the old Ace Combats with only jets for control: players control other aerial combat machines such as piloting a chopper, shooting mini guns from a heli, controlling other kind of aircraft apart from your regular fighter jets.
Good experience, but if you're expecting pure fighter jet game like H.A.W.X., this might not be for you.
