龍氏和高氏夫婦，他們一對是五金行商人和作家，一對是律師和投資顧問，同樣住在紐約市的中產住宅區，表面上體面而溫文。一日高氏夫婦的兒子撒卡利在公園用木棍打傷了龍氏夫婦的兒子伊頓，令伊頓的咀唇受了重傷，兩隻門牙掉落。為此龍氏夫婦米高(約翰韋利 飾)和潘妮(茱迪科士打 飾)邀請高氏夫婦阿倫(基斯托夫華爾茲 飾)及南茜(琦溫絲莉 飾)到他們家談判，討論和解方案。

最初四人均表現有禮，冷靜對話，但後來一連串小事觸發四人的敏感神經，他們慢慢失去理性，互相指罵，時而是雙方家長口角；時而雙男鬥雙女；時而三人聯手圍 攻其中一人；時而是夫婦之間內鬨，互數對方不是。本來是一場希望以文明解決暴力問題的對話，但四人的文明包裝和自我規範，始終敵不過內心潛藏的原始性格，最終以野蠻方式結束這次談判。
