Cute and Iconic but Too Hard
Gettenka is a game bursting with character (and characters), with interesting and hilarious designs and a vast amount of custom items in weapons and accessories. It has a wide variety of stages and is sure to appeal to any fan of Japanese history. The stories and stages are all presented with a tongue-in-cheek, zany humour, and it is difficult not to love the cast of colourful characters.
Unfortunately, they apparently forgot that the target audience of this game was under 12, and the resultant difficulty makes it difficult in turn to recommend. This game is insanely hard in places of the Scenario Mode, which is pretty much the only way to unlock items and characters. There is no difficulty setting on that mode either, which is a frustrating oversight.
The AI is cheap and has the game on its side at every turn. It accomplishes things that the player simply cannot do with the same weapons. The Rush Mode, which is probably designed as a balancing system, is ridiculously unbalanced and literally impossible for the player to do successfully. Naturally, the computer will accomplish it every time, which can result in sure wins turned instantly to bitter losses.
Fortunately, the Free Mode of the game, which allows you to pit up to four characters against each other on a field of your choosing, has difficulty settings and is much more reasonable. It's loads of fun, which makes it all the more disappointing that the Scenario Mode you're forced to play is so bad by contrast.
The designs for the characters, items, and stages are all fantastic, and really the game itself is excellent, but the fact that the Scenario Mode is so frustrating and not very much fun is disappointing. The stories it tells are amusingly told, even though the animation is minimalist. But this was done to save space, clearly, so that it could fit so many characters and items, which is a great thing.
If you have loads of patience and love Japanese historical figures presented in a new and different way, if you enjoy silly comedy and colourful fun, you will definitely want to pick this up. It's worth playing, but not everyone will be able to deal with its monstrous difficulty level and unreasonable method for unlocking things. Many will not want to spend the money for a game that, more often than not, seems determined to prevent them from unlocking anything to make the game more fun.
