Silly Side Stories from Bamboo Blade's Manga Author
Whereas the Aka Ban drama CD ties in directly to the Bamboo Blade TV series, the Shiro Ban CD comprises a pair of standalone stories written by Totsuka Masahiro, author of the original manga (the cover illustration is by the manga's artist, Igarashi Aguri, as well). Shiro Ban, which was released before Aka Ban, is ~68 minutes long, with the story portions being ~45 minutes; however, the two story tracks are not of equal length. The first, more substantive story, following an attempt to recruit more boys into the kendo club, is a whopping 37 minutes long, while the second story, a blast of absurdity that pokes fun at the lack of any visuals for the audience to see, is less than 8 minutes long. Both stories feature generous helpings of silliness, including some serious mistreatment of a certain sensei. The participating cast is limited to the Muroe kendo club members, one new, guest character (played by Yasumura Makoto), and a brief appearance by Tamaki's father (plus assorted minor, nameless characters). Satou Rina sings Satori's character song decently, though I don't find the song particularly memorable. If you're trying to decide on only one of the two drama CDs, I would recommend Aka Ban a little more, mainly because I enjoyed the interplay with the Machido kendo club. Aka Ban has more character-based humor, while Shiro Ban has more of a slapstick mood. Still, Shiro Ban is a very fun listen, and if not for the minimal liner notes and single-fold cardboard packaging, rather than a sturdier standard jewel case, I would give it full marks.

NOTE: use common sense and be aware that this CD is entirely in Japanese. Quiet your internal otaku and refrain from purchasing if you don't have reasonable Japanese listening comprehension.
