description

Crazy Racer retains some of the cast members of Crazy Stone, but the story is not related to the predecessor. Racer's multiple plot lines center on racing cyclist Geng Hao, who is unlucky to lose the gold medal in a race by a mere 0.01 second. He's banned from racing again, so he has to settle for a lousy job as a seafood deliveryman. Five years later, Geng Hao is still not out of the bad patch, as he inadvertently gets himself sucked into a web of criminal complications, finding cops, crooks, and even a corpse hot on his tail!

A genuinely hilarious black comedy
Ning Hao, the director behind the comedy 'Crazy Stone', returns with 'Crazy Racer', aka 'Silver Medalist'. Starring an ensemble cast of Chinese and Taiwanese actors, the story interweaves seemingly unrelated subplots into an arching, funny film that touches on all the characters and their individual stories.

Chinese actor Huang Bo plays Gene Hao, the titular bicyclist, who after losing a match due to a series of unfortunate events (and his own naivete), get himself banned from participating in future races. Down and out and needing money for his coach's funeral, Geng gets himself involved with Taiwanese gangsters led by rotund Taiwanese variety star Rong Xiang, a Thai drug peddler, two inept hitmen, and an amoral businessman by the name of Li Fala (played by another Taiwanese celebrity, Jiu Kong).

The individual stories intersect and separate continuously, and Ning keeps the editing tightly paced to great effect. The film was lovingly shot in Xiamen, Fujian, and the cinematography uses the flavour of the province well. The city is as much a part of the cast as the human actors. There are no wasted roles as the entire cast pull their weights brilliantly. Therein lies the reasons for 5 nominations for 3 different Asian film awards.

For those who understand mandarin, 'Crazy Racer' is a genuinely hilarious black comedy in the vein of Guy Ritchie's gangster films like 'Snatch' and 'Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels'. Those who rely on subtitles may find the experience slightly diluted, but it is still very much worth your time.
