In the autumn of 1944 the Japanese military had collapsed into an overwhelmingly disadvantageous battle-situation in the Pacific War. Under the proposal of Vice Admiral Takijiro Onishi (Masato Ibu), kamikaze units were formed comprising fighter aircraft loaded with 250 kilogram bombs that would conduct suicidal ramming attacks on enemy ships. In 1945. In order to resolutely defend Okinawa to the last, Chiran Airport in Kagoshima prefecture was rapidly converted to an army kamikaze. It was the time for Second Lieutenant Bando (Yosuke Kubozuka), Tabata (Michitaka Tsutsui), and Nakanishi (Satoshi Tokushige) to take part in the Battle. The unit members each solemnly spent their last night of their lives, and 439 young men would depart for a never return mission in the next dawn.

Touching story, good film
ne would expect a film written by ultranationalist Ishihara Shintaro to feature chest-pumping Japanese jingoism. However, "For Those We Love" primarily is a nuanced if sentimental tale of what motivated young men to fly to their deaths as kamikaze pilots. Set in an airbase town in Japan, the film views the war through the eyes of the owner of a traditional Japanese inn. The great (and still lovely) Kishi Keiko stars as the inn's owner and her character acts as a surrogate mother to the young men who pass through that airbase en route to their certain deaths. We learn of the lives of these young men and of the families and lovers they leave behind.
