The game was alright
As 1 of fans of Megadrive's Golden Axe back there. I kinda disappointed with the gameplay & story. But still, in terms of ordinary hack & slash game. The game was still fun & pretty much enjoyable.

Here's an Axe to grind
The Golden Axe series, along with Double Dragon and are Knuckle, was a side-scrolling hack-and-slash mainstay among those who owned a Sega Mega Drive, the game console of the late 1980s. You controlled a character who beat up numerous baddies before facing a stage boss. Those games were must-plays back then. Golden Axe: Beast Rider certainly has high standards to live up to. It has brought over to the new consoles, such as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the world of Golden Axe. Golden Axe: Beast Rider is true to the spirit of Golden Axe. You play as Tyris Flare, the Amazonian warrior from the original game, as she searches for parts of the Golden Axe, a weapon that can kill the ultimate baddie, Death Adder. Along the way, you can ride beasts that can tail-swipe and pounce on foes, blast enemies with fire spells and sang food and potions from gnome thieves - all elements from the original games. Unfortunately, giving the old-school gamers something to reminisce is the only area where the game succeeds - everything else is poorly implemented.

Combat mostly relies on two moves - quick attack and heavy attack. Quick attack takes too long to kill enemies, averaging 15 hits for your run-of-the-mill enemy. Heavy attack is too slow and gets you beaten up if you use it while overrun by enemies. Then there are the evade-and-parry moves - elements that you must master to survive in this overly difficult game. There are small puzzle elements littered throughout the game but running back and forth just to mount a beast to break through a gate is tedious. The biggest disappointment has to be the lack of a multiplayer mode. Slashing enemies with your friends was one of the biggest appeals of the original game - now it seems like a vastly inferior clone to games like Devil May Cry and even Dynasty Warriors. If you really liked the original Golden Axe: Beast Rider, a run through this game will have you craving for the original. Or else, play other better games.
