Item Description

Focusing on the concepts of light, dark, and death Hotaru no Nikki (stylized as htoL#Niq) is a brand new, incredibly creative, IP from Nippon ichi Software and Masayuki Furuya. Although graphically the title looks lighthearted, be wary it received a 17+ rating in Japan due to "gruesome death scenes".

The story begins on December 31st 9999 and focuses on the characters Mion, a young girl with amnesia who wakes in a desolate world and Hotaru the player-controlled firefly who chooses to lead her through the ruins, to the outside world.

In the 'World of Light' Mion's movements are dependent on how you maneuver Hotaru, with your main goal being to lead her to safety. You can move Mion or get her to perform specific tasks. In the 'World of Shadow' you control a firefly that can remove objects within the game but you must avoid both traps and monsters lurking in the shadows. Although you have no physical attack, your manipulation of the environment will be an incredibly powerful tool when it comes to taking out enemies.

Similar to the Japanese version, htoL#Niq won't be using the typical 'world switching' mechanics seen in other games, but instead allows the player to control the Light World firefly on Vita's front touchpad and the Shadow World firefly on the rear touchpad.

A dark and unusual fairy tale
The art style is what caught my attention which is simply superb. The combination of art style, animation and music work together to supply a surprisingly foreboding atmosphere and an attachment to the protagonist you are trying to protect.

The game uses only the front and rear touch-pads. While this works quite well, the rear touch pad takes some getting used to. It may have been nice to have an option to use the thumb sticks instead but this is only a minor hurdle.

Highly recommended.

Beautiful and well designed
This game is very beautiful and the puzzle are originals. You will never feel to do the same puzzle. But the game is VERY difficult. You will die, and die, and die again, and if you think you are safe, you will die another time.

But it is enjoyable anyway

Beautiful game
A great puzzle game with a beatiful visual.
Just don't think that childish style make a easy game, you'll need to burn those cell brains if yoi want to see the true ending.

Surprisingly good!!
The first thing you'll notice in this game is the spectacular art style. You simply cannot dislike it!

Then you'll notice its unusual gameplay. You control a firefly with the touchscreen (or the analog stick if you prefer it) and Mion follows it.

Now I have to say that The Firefly Diary has puzzles that puts both Braid and Limbo to shame. You have to be sharp-minded and creative to pass through all the deadly hazards in this game. And speaking of deadly, you will die, A LOT. There is even a trophy you'll get when you'll die 100 times (and you WILL die that much, trust me).

It also took me a while to find the true ending of the game, but it was so satisfying!

Go for it. If you love challenges and also want to play something completely out of the ordinary, The Firefly Diary is your game. You won't get disappointed.
