"I Wish I Knew" explores the history of the ever-evolving Chinese metropolis through the interviews with 18 persons of varying degrees of connection with the city. Like the chapters of a novel, their personal stories together from a bigger picture of the changes of Shanghai from the year of 1930 to the present day. These people include descendants of legendary figures line Barbara Fel (Fei Mu's daughter), Du Mei Ru (Du Yuesheng's daughter), and contemporary luminaries line Hou Hsiao Hsien (Director), Wei Wei (Actress), Rebecca Pan (singer), and Han Han (writer). Their stories of rebels and revolution, soldiers and war, gangsters and assassinations, artists and romance are neatly linked together by an anonymous character portrayed by Jia's regular Tao Zhao.

Awesome Documentary
Piecing together some history of 18 people with connections to the city. The interviews and some images are worth to watch and it's a great documentary.
