Deserves SIX stars! Superb film!
As much as I liked the first Ip Man release, #2 is even better! Ip Man 2 rivals other great films like "Rocky", with a stand-up-and-cheer boxing match at the end of both films.
The only problem I had with this film is that Donnie Yen smokes several times in the film. A true martial arts master would NEVER put tobacco drug poisons into his body

A worthy follow-up to a good film
Not much remains to be said of Donnie Yen’s second outing as Wing Chun Grandmaster Ip Man. A competently-lensed and thoroughly enjoyable action film, the film recreate 1950s Hong Kong complete with grimy alleys and corrupt cops. Having arrived in Hong Kong not long ago and expecting a second child by his wife (Xiong Dailin), Grandmaster Ip takes to giving Wing Chun lessons to eke out a living. This plan runs into trouble when Master Hung (Sammo Hung), a Hung Gar sifu who is also head of the coalition of martial arts schools in Hong Kong, intervenes. This results in a violent rivalry that is only contained when Twister, a British Boxer (assayed by British Iranian martial artist Darren Shahlavi) kills unbending Master Hung in an impromptu match. Determined to restore the dignity of the Chinese Hong Kongers, Grandmaster Ip accepts a challenge to meet Twister in the ring.

The production quality of Ip Man 2 is every bit as high as its predecessor, and the writing equally solid. When the action choreography relies on the considerable skills of Yen, Hung, and Shahlavi, the film is absolutely fantastic. However, when obvious wire-fu is called upon to facilitate the action in more than one scene, the action disappoints more than impresses. Sammo Hung, who was also the action choreographer and director for this film as he was in the previous, delivered the goods, but the attempts to augment the performers’ talents with wires and/or CG were not good ones.

In conclusion, Ip Man 2 is an excellent but not perfect film. Nuanced performances from Donnie Yen, Sammo Hung, and Darren Shahlavi, as well as the use of genuine Wing Chun in the fight scenes, make the film memorable and even allow it to shine. A worthy follow-up to a good film.
