Three years after Ip Man 2, Donnie Yen returns in the titular role of the real life Wing Chun grandmaster who is most renowned as the teacher of Bruce Lee, who is finally showing up in this movie just to drop some signature moves and kick some cigarettes (as he liked to do on sets in real life).
Otherwise, the story is a continuation of the proven Ip Man formula: personal challenges, family problems and defending the neighborhood from gangs of thugs, most of these solvable with impressive martial arts and incredibly elaborate mass brawls.
However, the outstanding feature of part 3 is the duel that you have never known you wanted to see: Donnie Yen vs Mike Tyson. The most surprising face-off that came out of nowhere. That is until you learn about “Sadako vs Kayako” aka “Ring”-girl vs “Grudge”-boy (yes, that's a thing).
Guaranteeing a high-octane drive of the fight scenes are returning director Wilson Yip and choreographer Yuen Woo Ping, the guy who seems to be responsible for a majority of the martial arts fights that ever impressed anybody. But the main ingredient here is Donnie Yen, who not only believably stands up to Tyson's massive form, but ended up accidentally fracturing his index finger during filming.
And although there is a chance of him portraying Master Ip a fourth time, let's hope Donnie has a lot more movies of this calibre in him. The guy is turning 53 this year and doesn't seem to slow down a second. You can see him next in “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny” and after that he will be in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”, hopefully with more to do than the guys from “The Raid” in “Force Awakens”. Fingers crossed that he might turn out to be a Jedi who somehow survived order 66.
