New designed PlayStation2.5™ & Xbox1.5™ consoles debuting in 2003?

While the true next generation consoles won't hit the market until 2005, all 3 major video game platform manufacturers have announced promising new hardware for the year 2003.

As Yahoo! reported two days ago, Microsoft™ is planning to release a much lower priced Xbox™ console which will retail for around US$ 129-149. Sony™ on the other hand plans to come up with a cheaper variation of the PS2™ console, estimated to retail for US$ 99 only.

Nintendo™ with slightly different plans announced "A portable GameCube™ device (that) would bring next-generation graphics to the portable market -- a market dominated by Nintendo™ with no competition from Sony™ or Microsoft™". We will have to see what is hiding behind this, maybe the Game Cube™ Game Boy™ Player which Japanese version is already available for preorder on Play-Asia.com?

Nevertheless it sounds promising and will open the video game market to many new gamers with less budget available. Having the PS One™ release in mind, we are looking forward to see the rather clumsy PS2™ and Xbox™ in a brand new outfit. :)
