description

After months of speculation, Nintendo has finally unveiled the Nintendo Switch (previously codenamed Nintendo NX).

The Nintendo Switch is both a home console and a handheld device - a hybrid of sorts. On the go, it'll be in the form of a tablet that also has a docking station which then plugs into your TV.

In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

Great New Start for Nintendo
After the debacle that was the Wii U, Nintendo had a lot of ground to make up. By most measures, the Wii U did poorly and could not escape being thought of as an add-on to the Wii, rather than a true successor (i.e. - so I just need to buy the tablet thing for my Wii, right?)

With that in mind, Nintendo has outdone themselves with the Switch. The hardware markedly improved over the Wii U and the OS/UI runs a lot smoother as well. Often times I would have to wait quite a while before the Wii U would boot up, then it would take quite a bit more time after that before I could get into a game.

Being designed as both a handheld and console device, Nintendo has smartly decided to focus on this aspect and the Switch wakes up from sleep super quickly. It also has a suspend and resume function like all other major consoles but in my opinion works much better than the PS4 or XB1 and at least as well as on the Vita.

It's also a fun piece of technology and I was a lot more excited to get my hands on it and play with it than I was with my PS4, despite the fact the Switch is significantly less powerful than Sony's flagship device. It feels pretty sturdy and the works as advertised; plug the Switch into its dock and suddenly your game is magnified up on your TV screen.

It's also fantastic to have full-fledged games that you can play in your house or on the go and that's what I have found myself doing with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Being able to put games in sleep and resume them quickly is a boon when playing in handheld mode while out, then being able to dock it and resume playing when you get back home is a delight.

The only real knock against the Switch currently is the lack of quality software titles and the absurdly high prices of some of its accessories. On top of that, there are more than a few reported issues of Switch screens being scratched by the dock and sync issues with the left Joycon. I've only encountered the sync issue perhaps once in over 70 hours of playing Zelda, but the screen scratch issue was concerning enough to me that I immediately slapped a screen protector on my Switch.

With the Switch, Nintendo can finally put all their creative talent behind one device and that is an extremely exciting prospect. Nintendo has a pretty good start out of the gate with the Switch and Breath of the Wild, and let's hope that they can maintain that with more quality titles sooner rather than later.
