Wow... What a film.
I just got the Blu-ray in of Only Yesterday (Hong Kong) and boy oh boy what a film. I'm not going to go into extensive details about the film, because I'm not that much of a wordsmith and wouldn't be able to convey the emotional impact of this movie as well as others have. If you are looking at the film because you are searching for every Studio Ghibli movie to watch, well it's vastly different than any of their other films. This movie isn't really for kids. Not because of outragoues content, but because of the mature, slow, thought-provoking nature of the subject matter. So just don't go in expecting a fantastical adventure. But by all means check this film out.

The Hong Kong Blu-Ray looks fantastic, sounds great, english subtitles are fine, and it's half the price of the Japanese Blu-Ray so I highly recommend ordering this version of the Blu-Ray if you are looking to purchase this film. And don't worry, the chances of this coming out in North America are so so low, so you don't have to worry about a licensed American version coming out.

great nostalgic piece
Lovely coming of age movie. Good movie for old people like me to reminisce about the good old days in the countryside.

This is what many consider Isao Takahata's masterpiece. It's about a twenty-something year-old woman who reminisces about her childhood while trying to figure out what to do with her life.
There are several references to menstruation. It's nothing to worry about though. They don't go into details. I honestly think this movie might get a PG rating if it were released stateside.
Overall, great animation and a good movie. You might even recognize the song at the end credits!
