Campaign Code for FF14

If you will be playing FF14 Online next year (2010) then might as well pick this Japanese version (the one with the logo only on the cover). It contains a campaign code that gives you a "secret item" in-game when you play FF14.
description
A tale of souls from a futuristic civilization illuminated by the Light of the Crystal

This eagerly anticipated title takes full advantage of the PlayStation 3 system's advanced hardware, providing tangible, intuitive controls while delivering seamless transitions between real-time gameplay and stunning in-game cinematics. The latest in cutting-edge technology has been utilized in development of FINAL FANTASY XIII, thus making this newest addition to the FINAL FANTASY series worthy of the title "next generation."

Excellent RPG
It may not be the best game in the FF series, but that doesn't make it less great.

Still waiting on an amazing FF like FF7
I'm a big fan of the Final Fantasy series, and since final fantasy 9 await something that looks like the last series, where we have the wonderful Final Fantasy 7 and 6, with his great stories and characters emblematic and charismatic and wonderful melodies created by Nobuo Uematsu.

Final Fantasy XIII becomes mandatory for anyone who is a fan, to follow with the series, but not so fantastic about her story because during the game you do not hold much to the script, but the duels of the new combat style that venture to say that is the best in the game. The combinations of paradigms and jobs was very interesting, and it makes the gameplay great, even being a game very self-directed, I think a lot of that is the current standard of not having the World Map in the game. The graphics are impressive, which is the standard Square, and it helps a lot in the game, because there are moments when you wonder with all that's on the screen. In summary Final Fantasy is a good RPG game that is weak in some spots, and other shows in the tradition of the series.

(Great game!)
Deve-se ter este jogo! Muito bom, garante horas de diversão. Alguns pontos poderiam ser melhorados, como a linearidade da melhoria das skills e versatilidade na composição das equipes.
No mais, excelente!
A must have! Very good, it provides hours of fun. Some aspects could get better like the linearity of the skills progression and more versatility on team components choices.
Besides that, excellent!

The finest graphics!
The look of the game is hypnotic! The battle system is different from what I'm used to: much more simple, what limits the strategy, but doesn't fade the general picture.
You'll have several hours of fun and visual delight!

Really don't pass the opportunity to get a original Final Fantasy XIII, don't care if is Greatest Hit (or Whatever) the only fact is the same game of 2010. the guys to get it in 2010 are angry for the people to purchese it in half of the real price jejeje. i don't care about the red line because is the same game only play and you don't have regrets. Lighting come on lady (:

Not bad.
It's 'been there, done that' on older consoles, now 'to go there and do that' again, you can't choose to go left or right, you're always pushed forward along and there is always 5928472 enemies along a stretch of road.
And if you're not strong enough you're gonna get mowed down alot. Not for people who don't play JRPG alot or who aren't a fan of turn based combat.
Still, it's a pretty game and fun when you get on a roll, but having to fight a group of enemies identical to the ones you just fought gets old after awhile, and dying after gaining some momentum is a real buzz kill.

Fans will enjoy, I did a little, but turn based games aren't for me.

Great game
One of the best RPGs on the PS3, although linear, the game is very fun especially for those who already like the Final Fantasy series, and the battle system that exists in the game. Long game offering a great experience.

Another master piece from Square-Enix. Big history and intense characters.

BIG game. That's all!
The first time I played, Final Fantasy XIII scared me because I was expecting an RPG with a huge world to explore and numerous sidequests. The linearity of the maps is in fact one of the biggest flaws of this game.

It was clear that the focus of Final Fantasy XIII was the story, which is actually quite interesting and has a good amount of surprises.

Could have been much,much more.
Ok,for one thing,i hate the linear gameplay and the button mashing. The game doesn't encourage exploration, but in a sense it never overwhelms you. Good for pickups, not so for marathons.

Producers are trying to maintain and, at the same time, add news in relation to the previous titles. The gameplay is resulting a very satisfactory evolution perspective at the storyline of this serie.

Crap story but pretty game
Great graphics but overly long tutorial mode. Feels like square is holding your hand through 14 hours before you are allowed to play the game yourself. God awful storyline. Note to square complicated story does not mean good writing! It's still fun to play with its unique battle system and simply the best gfx of this generation. Even it's sequel can't compare

Game with great CG and picture for FinalFantasy series ever!
FFXIII is one of the Final Fantasy series that have combination of good quality CG and animation. The character design is great, you even fall in love with many character in the game. And the story is interesting even if it quite linear storyline. Now the price is very attractive. If you are fan of FF series. You should never miss this one!

Unforgettable Fantasy
Depend how you look at it, this game is either give you a joyable JRPG moment or dissapointing experience. Having played several Final Fantasy games in the past I can say this game stray a bit far from series in term of gameplay. The game is a bit linear and short. There are not much to do compare to its predecessor. Its lack of side mission or quest. But following Final Fantasy traditions this game deliver a unique story, a nice looking cut scene, a beautiful enviroments and character, interesting battle and character progression system. Having said that, if you accept this game as it is then Final Fantasy 13 is definately a good Japanese RPG in this console generation.

Best of Both Worlds
I admit- I started to cry when I saw the characters speak in Japanese with english subtitles

I literally waited 2 years to play this game, but when I heard this version came out - I impulsively bought this game without any second thoughts despite having a copy of the game already.

Truly Best of Both Worlds
Japanese Audio + English game interface (all functions of the game are in English for you to understand)

It absolutely does not get any better than this - playing my favorite game series with your favorite Japanese voice actors

The only con about this game is that the captions are light subbed - not accurate to the actual conversation, almost like they overlaid the English copy of the game over the Japanese version

regardless of the small con this version of the game makes Final Fantasy More Memorable

~ Square Enix should continue producing this ver. for audiences that enjoy the Japanese voice actors over the dub

Great Animation But Lacks in Gameplay
The graphics and animation are in full HD 1080p which is breathtaking, however the gameplay is sorely lacking.

The battle system is tied to time and thus it plays more like an action game rather than the turn based system traditional Final Fantasy titles are famous for. If an RPG gamer buys a RPG game why would he/she want an action game? The game requires that the player slog through the time based system otherwise the story can't continue which is a big drawback in the gameplay mechanics.

Just Above Average
I play a lot of rpgs and have played pretty much every Final Fantasy game that has been released. Out of all the ff title I have played this one has given me a lot of mixed feelings, because I beleive with just a little bit more of an effort this could have been much better.

Story= Very good. Keeps you intrigued, you want to see more. Can be a little confusing at times though.
Graphic= Like watching a high definition movie, nothing wrong here.
Sound= Very good. Uses a lot of familiar ff sounds and music. Nothing wrong here.
Battle System= Very fast paced, but also very simplistic. Wished it was more like earlier titles.
Other= The game is very linear, more so than any other ff title. There are no towns to visit and hardly any side quests. The side quests are actually only introduced near the end of the game, which is a little late. Also I didn't find the side quests interesting.

Surprisingly Good
I had heard many mixed reviews on Final Fantasy XIII. And I really did not know what to expect when I started playing this game as I never followed it until its release. After having played it, I can understand both sides of the spectrum, but overall I have found it to be enjoyable.

First thing I noticed was that it is very streamlined in comparison to past Final Fantasy XIII games. No more searching towns. And I found myself very rarely mashing the "find" button in every corner of the map for hidden items.

The same applies to battles. You only control one character. But you can influence the moves of other characters by using the Paradigm system. Again, it feels very streamlined, but that is not a bad thing. It results in a very fast paced, exciting battle system. While some might miss the traditional turn-based system, I can at least say that this departure is not bad.

Visually, the game is quite amazing. The in-game rendering is of very high detail, and many will be amazed by the over-the-top pre-rendered sequences. The audio is very fitting as well.

Overall, the game has been an enjoyable experience for me. While I understand the complaints that this game has gotten, I still have very much enjoyed it.

Good but not great...
Final Fantasy 13 is a good game. Its different from the other FF series, its more like FF12 but more action oriented game. I really missed the Turn Based style of FF10 and the broad world of FF12.

First and foremost, the graphics is amazing. This is one of the most beautiful game in the world of video game. Its almost on par with the amazing God Of War 3 and the phenomenal Uncharted 3.

No videogame is great without having a great gameplay, and FF13 is average in this category. A lot of the time when you facing the enemies, you just needed to push the action button without thinking any strategy.
And the first part of the game is very linear, only when you come to the second part of the game that the world around you can be explored.

Overall I give FF13 a 4 star, its a good game but not great...but for RPG fans out there, do not miss this game, its still fun to play.

Solid JRPG
Final Fantasy XIII was not the stellar JRPG series fans were hoping for. It's far too linear (right down to the level design!), and for the first half of the game the player has very little say in how to play the game. The game does open up in the final few chapters but for some it'll be too little too late.

Not everything is bad however. The graphics are nice, and the FMV stunning on occasion. The combat system is fast and tactical and a huge improvement over the system used in FFXII. Artwork is great (as per series standards) as is the background music. Whilst the story is standard JRPG fare it is handled reasonably well and there are only a couple of irritating characters that mar the experience (Snow and Vanille!).

In all it's a decent JRPG with a lot of content, so if you're a fan of the genre, it's a steal at this discounted price.

This is another version of FFXIII. It changs from original US version only that the audio will be in Japaness. So i will not talk about the gameplay system.
In my idea, the RPG games and Anime, the characters that speak in Japaness are the best.
In this version, sometime when character is talking, the subtitle is not show, and the timing of the subtitle is sometime very bad and that make you annoying,
Other is great
*** Comment for FFXIII , when your LV is high enough to overwhelm the enemies, the only thing you have to do in this game is pumping the O botton LOL :))

Best purchase ever...
I have purchased many things online but I've got to say, the ASIA version of Final Fantasy XIII is by far one of the best purchases I have made. I have played many games with the original DUB so it's nothing new. The game plays great and the original DUB is sounds great. Glad I got it before it ran out of print/stock.

This is a Great Game on it's own!
The quality and beauty of this game is superb to say the list. I think the fault is with some FF gamers expectations. I have been playing FF since it was on the famicom. Change is necessary for a game that is called FINAL Fantasy. If there weren't innovations and new perspectives it would be a simple rehash of mechanics and just a new story. The cutscenes and levels are beautiful! Sometimes I just stop at a cliff or ocean side to look at the horizon. ^^

one of the last great JRPGs
when I first played this game I didnt like it very much. I picked up a 2nd time when I was much older. I enjoyed the game so much more the 2nd time becuase I was old enough now to appreciate the adult themes to this game. So many JPRGs look like and feel like and have stories for little kids, or mabey teenagers. This is a game I did not appreciate until I became an adult.

Good but not too great
The game isn't that bad as others have deemed it to be. Although not entirely your typical FF game...some striking changes have been introduced but nonetheless, it is still a solid FF game. The most admiring change is the new battle system. It's one of the really nice new additions to the genre that I would like to see being implemented in future FF games.

Version wise, I love the jap audio coupled with the choice of either english or chinese subtitles as I simply find it too awkward for the audio to be in english for an ff game.

The first game I bought from PA, and I so amazed by the graphic and Lightning-san especially. A must buy game for RPG lover, even though the game is a bit linear and battle length when player still weak is so long, but recommended~

I LOVE FF
It's the best series ever. Square Enix is awesome, they always surprise me with the grafics and gameplay.
The stories are a character on its own, they always amaze me with plots and twists.
Basically this game is an work of art, it can entertain me for a long time and it never gets old.
Enjoy.

Awesome game!
Some people say that this game is too linear for a FF game, and even if it is, it's barely noticeable. The story flows great and the characters, although robotic at the beginning, develop some great emotions and personalities throughout the game. The battle system is also very addictive and has a very smooth learning curve up to the point it gets frantic. Definitely worth a shot if you like RPGs!

Amazing graphical technology!
One of the great RPG games that is attractive in term of amazing graphic and theme song. I never like RPG game other than Final Fantasy especially now comes with PS3 version which utilizes the maximal power of the ps3 technology to generate an amazing graphic both in CG and in game play graphic. Besides, price has gone down and worth to keep a copy. I enjoy the graphic very much than the story or game play.

FF serial is must play RPG game, but its not as good as expected, I hope FF13-2 can make some change on it, besides the chinese language did earn Squinx lot customers back to camp after "spreading leg" to XBOX360, but it wont be changed on sale if nothing change on game itself.

The game takes place in the fictional floating world of Cocoon, whose government, the Sanctum, is ordering a purge of civilians who have supposedly come into contact with Pulse, the much-feared world below. The former soldier Lightning begins her fight against the government in order to save her sister who has been branded as an unwilling servant to a god-like being from Pulse, making her an enemy of Cocoon. Lightning is soon joined by a band of allies, and together the group also become marked by the same Pulse creature. They rally against the Sanctum while trying to discover their assigned task and whether they can avoid being turned into monsters or crystals at the completion.

Still a terrible game, but now sounds better!
A 3 star rating is excellent, because the game itself gets 1 star.

PROS:
- THIS GAME LETS YOU LOAD YOUR OTHER REGION FILES. HOW AWESOME IS THAT. That's where the extra 2 stars comes from.
- Lightning sounds a lot less like a bitch with Sakamoto Maaya as her seiyuu.
- You can listen to the Japanese voices while reading English text!

CONS:
- Lightning is still a bitch.
- The English subtitles are NOT subtitles. Thy are the English captions for the English game. It's essentially close enough, but this is not called subtitling. Except for listening to Japanese voices (or if you're in fact playing this game in Chinese instead), you are pretty much still playing the English game.

If you like Final Fantasy XIII, then this is a great purchase! If you didn't like Final Fantasy XIII but for some reason want to finish the game with a Vanille who doesn't annoy you as soon as she opens her mouth, this is the game to go for.

Japanese Voices W/English Subs
This is the only version I would have purchased of this game as I cannot stand bad English voice acting Square is notorious for their crappy dubs. That being said I have to admit hearing all of the characters in Japanese and playing the game was worth it this version is THE best version to buy for someone with my taste that cannot read Japanese. I hope they release XIII-2 in the same way as they did this version.

ABSOLUTELT LOVE THIS!
I've played all the main titles in the series, and I heard about all the negative things people had to say about this game. However, I still went into it with insanely high expectations, hoping it could rival or be the very best in the series, and guess what? It didn't disappoint at all! My perfect game...but lacking a few tools...
Likes: There was almost nothing to complain about. The game runs well, menus are crisp, and the battles are amazing (although sometimes unnecessarily tough). To address the main complaint on linearity, i feel it was a nice choice to keep the game fast paced and story driven. I play JRPGs for just that reason.

Dislikes: I have only one complaint about the game. It does feel like you are dragging the characters to the end. While the linearity I think is good for the story, it makes it feel like one long marathon to the end. The story is not as enthralling as i would have hoped (being an anime fan put my standards higher i suppose), and it does not need the linearity to focus this game.

Pet peeves but nothing to write home about: Long...long...uhhmmm...long battles. After battle ratings really lowered my morale sometimes. Don't need those. Also the lack of menus. I like to be able to see an in depth look at my inventory like weapons, and a stat page with maybe a picture or two would not have killed them.

All in all a good game and one someone like myself would enjoy, but my rating only received the fourth star because of the in game mechanics like the crystarium, simple stat and weapon system, and the fact that they brought back a revamped ATB system.

sapienoid (23) on 07, Jun. 2011 12:57 (HKT)
Surprising
Despite all the uproar about how linear the game was, I was surprised when I started the game. It's not like it was the only game that was so linear compared to other games. Other games use it as well but we just never felt it was so because of obvious borders. However I felt that the linearity worked for the game by driving the story in the beginning (although it was very linear in the first 10 chapters of the game). When I got to wider open areas, I felt pretty lost. lol.

Loving the new battle system as well. Though not entirely. It kinda feels like a combination of the traditional turn-based system and some new additions. Love the crystarium system too. Feels like FFX.

Everything else is up to my expectations so far. The graphics and the quality of the game. But the best part I love about this version is the Japanese voice-overs! So great to be able to play it in original audio with all the text on-screen in English. But there're few audio parts that are missing (the characters talk but no voice is there).

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised and very happy that the game is in my collection.

Love it.
Had always been a fan of the FF series. There are some changes that I like and some I don't. Okay, it may be too linear for some people's taste. For a seasoned gamer, you probably would think like you're being treated like a non-gamer with the ultra-linear style and how the tutorials are done. The game is beautiful in HD, no doubt. Transition between pre-rendered scenes and in-game engine rendered ones are smooth and sometimes you just don't really realise that happened. That proves how good the graphics are. Maybe it's too linear for most, maybe it's the worst FF instalment for most. You can't please everyone that's for sure...but personally I love it!

One thing I like about this specific version, is that I can play it with Japanese audio and English subtitles. =D

Fantastic
First of all, this game is friendly to new players of the series
It explain everything. Every myths in the game take a little time to understand.

Story is huge and addictive.

The graphic is a blast, especially cutscenes. They're colorful, detailed and very worth watching. In-game graphics are still very good although not as good as cutscenes (of course!!)

Sound effects and musics are also great.
Voice actors and actresses are very talented.
Sound effects are well made and musics are memorable

Gameplay is split in two.
first: running in the world and second: battles.
The battles are fast and intense. You need to choose skills wisely in time. change role of your character to fit the situation.

Verdict : Final Fantasy XIII is a cannot-miss game of all time.

Not your regular FF series
For those thinking that this is like the other FF series then they would be dissapointed. This not like the classical FF series of going into world maps and exploring, the game is just straight foward where you just go on with the story without going into towns, doing side quests, or flying airships to travel between areas. The game is just linear. So when getting this game keep in mind that this is a new kind of Final Fantasy, actually dont think of it as Final Fantasy, think of it as a different game, then you can enjoy the game wthout being dissapointed.

Bandersnatch (1) on 22, Apr. 2011 12:57 (HKT)
Fair Rating of a GAME not a movie.
I am reminding you that I am rating this as a video game and not as a movie. If I were rating this as a movie, it would get a 10. But since it is not a movie, it gets a 3 out of 5.
There are many who always complain when a FF tries to change things up to stay relevant. I contrasted this with the last title that did the same thing.

FF 12 vs FF13
Game Title FF 12 FF 13
Story 6 10
Combat 9 8
Fun 9 8
Pacing 8 7
Difficulty 10 6
Graphics 7 10
Music 9 8
Replay Factor 8 0

What gives?

This game is obviously designed with the intent of bringing in new audiences and the LCD of gamers.
As such, it very slowly develops gameplay wise and the difficulty is a joke. It includes an option for harder difficulty, but doesn't make a difference since all battles are based on matching AI strings.

Graphics?
Games are for fun. If looks are part of fun, then you got me. I prefer KOF over Street fighter for the same principle, it is more fun. The graphics are beautiful, but what does that matter if it is even more linear than FF 10? Literally, every map is a straight path up till you reach the last disc--which is a c0ck tease of older FF titles in freedom.

Fun:
The battles are fun, but tedious. The pacing for developing is very slow, pandering to the LCD, yet a bit condescending to the same demographic.

Story:
Best movie/novel from FF in a long time. Made me cry more than once. Only the end of FF 10 did that for me.

Replay:
It's an interactive movie a la Metal Gear Graphics Showoff. Once the movie is done, so is everything else. There are no story altering decisions. Most things are a matter of course.

Subjective
basically FF13 has been mostly getting trashed by fans on the net,so I was a little hesitant on buying this but I was curious and went along with it.

basically it's not as bad as people say it was,the graphics are probably the best graphics you'll see for a JRPG on xbox and the story was pretty good.
though at times it really felt exhausting fighting hordes of monsters over and over again just to experience the story and in some chapters there are framerate issues.

but overall I think this game and entry to the FF series is better to be experienced than read and decide your own opinions about it.

because I've actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would considering what people has been saying about this game.

In all honestly, this game was fun for a week but after that, it was just too repetetive and too linear for my liking. The game opened up for a little bit but shortly after it returned the narrow little path that you must follow.

I wasn't expecting a remake of Final Fantasy 7 but this doesn't even come close to FF7's enjoyment value.

The graphics and cutscenes were very well done though.

Pales in comparison to other games in the main series
As a title bearing the Final Fantasy name, I think it's my least favorite of the series and an overall subpar game. Square never failed me for years but the last two games in the main series (FFXIII and FFIV) have been unable to spark an interest.

There are some good points in FFXIII (which I'm still playing currently) but I can't help but feel it's completely overshadowed by its weaknesses. I don't mind the linearity at all, it's just everything else feels so watered down and bogged by mistakes in comparison to their other FF's.

The graphics are gorgeous but... sterile and never gives me the impression of the grand scale that the world is supposed to represent; in fact, most of the time I just felt claustrophobic. I think this is a product of the game just looking too clean and the fact that the camera is pulled in closer than it should be. It struck me 3-4 hours into the game that the game would seem grander in scope visually had the camera been pulled back similarly to God of War (but not exactly, of course).

The plot is completely insensible unless you continually read the datalog (which should never have been the case to begin with) and the characters are all flat, stereotypical Japanese archetypes with equally over-exaggerated dialogue lines (I should mention I'm playing with Japanese VA/English subtitles). Granted, these cliche roles have been used in previous FF series but at least they seemed to have heart whereas everyone feels mostly two-dimensional here.

And the battle system is mostly okay, actually. I have no beef with it other than the fact that some things that happen on screen are just impossible to keep up with without my eyes going crazy. But, good God, Square, I wish they didn't hold my hand and baby me for up to 6+ hours teaching me bits of the battle system at a time. Being stuck with only a few attacks and control of one character for that length of time is just insanity. 99.99% of the time involved me mashing circle as fast as I could. It's only later that the system opens up, but it would have done them better to just unleash the options earlier on.

That being said... I don't think the game is terrible. I know I've only listed the negative points, but there are several things I do like about the game. I just don't think it pulls its weight when carrying the Final Fantasy name.

Final Fantasy XIII
you'll have to make up your own mind about Final Fantasy XIII. Personally, I didn't like the world as a tube - it was tolerable at the beginning, but towns etc. lost all their fun.

I personally have to give top FF marks for the story. I believe that this story is the best we've seen for a while. It's harsh, gruesome and scary at times. I think this world is easily on parallel with the FFX and the games before. The world is very intricate and well-made.

Unfortunately it suffers from limitations. The awesome detail and realism of the game has made it impossible to make it as interactive as other titles in the series.

I would recommend this to anyone. There are disappointments and things that don't measure up to your expectations, as with all Final Fantasy titles. But why not give it a go?

As for this version of the game: Having Japanese voices with English subtitles is a very nice touch. It certainly adds replay value to me. The one complaint I have is that the subtitles haven't been adjusted at all. Sometimes the characters are saying nothing and still the character's English line comes up on screen. It doesn't happen so much, and it doesn't spoil it for me, but it might make some groan.

Not really that bad
Many reviews saying that FF13 would be the last FF series but it wasn't that bad after all.
Indeed it is different from other FF and RPG on the gameplay setting but it is quite fresh for me. If you are looking for classical RPG then you might be disappointed playing FF13 as you don't get any alternative route to go for first 20 hours or so. It is more like watching cg movie rather than playing game (as the cutscenes almost looks like cg movie).
Seriously if you don't like the battle system then you will not enjoy this game since it is only 1 route to go for almost half of the game.
Luckily the character development system is similar to FF10 and the battle system is kind of matching that system so I still can accept it (though it gets annoying sometimes as you can easily lose to normal soldier when you are not careful and unlucky).
I guess SE knows that many people will get gameover easily so they design that you can just push a button and retry the game immediately when you gameover LOL.
Best thing of FF13 I would say is the graphic, seriously. At first I thought there are all cg movies! They really make the cutscenes looks so good like the cg!
I believe even those who don't like the gameplay would still praise the graphic.
Forgot to mention, the story is pretty good also. I never feel disappointed on FF's story.
Overall I would give it a 4 star, since I still enjoy the game and cannot stop playing when I first started the game.

Go for it
After finishing the English version of FF XIII, I decided to purchase the JP version, since I prefer the JP voices compared to the ENG.

Highly recommended for those who love the JP voice acting even if you can't comprehend the text. You'll quickly memorise all the items, spells, etc. so it really isn't too big of a deal. Though you'll get most of FF XIII (JP) if you can comprehend everything.

Go for it.

Excellent Game, bad subtitle
I bought PS3 back in 2006 for this. But before the game came out, it breaks down. So, I buy another PS3. This game is excellent in almost every way: graphic, music, character. Storyline is a bit fuzzy for me. Cocoon, Gran Pulse, etc.... I really can't understand that. It looks like controlling a CGI movie.

If you are considering buying the game, I can tell you that I can't stand the crappy English dub of any games and that includes this game. I played the English version briefly, and it can't beat the Japanese Voice Acting.

I am however disappointed in the innacuracy of the english subtitle, corresponding to its japanese voices. I will buy the Japanese one (all Japanese voices and subs)

Great for studying Japanese
First of all, FFXIII is an outstanding game that tells a thrilling story, and requires quick thinking and careful strategy to play well. Forget whatever you've heard about "just mash X"--that will keep you alive for the first couple hours, but after that you've got to plan ahead and strategize to survive.

I already finished the US version, so I bought the Asian version (Japanese voices, subs, and menus) to work on my Japanese language skills. I can read and understand basic Japanese, but FF requires deep knowledge of written and spoken Japanese. I would have been completely lost had I not played the US version first. But I'm still really enjoying the game a second time.

I do wish it created a second set of Trophies for me, but that's a small complaint. Five stars, two thumbs up, whatever. This is a fantastic game.

J Dub and Eng sub: All is well in the land of FF13
Snagged the NA version of this on release day and was quickly annoyed with the dub job. I can't fault the VA's here. The character's act like Japanese soap stars. Stamping a hack-job dub over them is a doomed endeavor. At one point, and I'm not kidding here, my wife thought I was watching porn. She laughed when I told her that it was one of the characters in the game. The English VA's saw fit to fill every stupid nod and head turn with "Mmm", "Um" and "ahh". That's why the asian version is worth picking up. Not only is the game playable with NA version saves, but the actors sound and, for lack of a better term, act like they were written to. The Japanese Dub and Eng Sub combo works well to solidify the vibrant atmosphere in FF13. In a game where presentation and surrounding are important key aspects to player immersion, you're going to want to ensure that the characters you have to listen to for 50 hours at least sound genuine. With the ASN version, you won't have that problem, guaranteed.

NA version FF13 == 50 hour episode of Power Rangers
ASN version FF13 == It's about frelling time!

JP with English subtitles.
It is extremely rare for Square-Enix to make a game that has JP voices with Eng subs even more so for a Final Fantasy game. S-E should make more games with this option available.

Sure the Eng Dub was fine, but the JP dub has Maaya Sakamoto.

Streamlined but Fun!
Square Enix really has streamlined Final Fantasy down to its most essential elements, to the point where it doesn't feel like much of an RPG anymore. The fact remains, though, that it's still a lot of fun to play and will eventually sink its hooks into you.

Be sure to get the Chinese version, too - the game is in English but with the original Japanese voice acting.

I finally can play FFXIII on Xbox 360, due to region restriction. The graphic is one of the best of 2010 Xbox 360 games. The battle system is way fast than the previous FF series. And the coolest thing, the game bundled with -Episode i- booklet, which has some details about the story and character i think (it's in Japanese sadly), but also have great pictures of the game.

visual spectacle but excessively roundabout
The game departs from its usual RPG route of opening up the adventure side early on by engaging in a movie-style straight narrative where options are very limited. While the visuals are a wonder, you can't help that the gameplay could be so much more. Thankfully, just as the story is long, at the very least you won't feel that character backgrounds are lost at all.

Horrible but Beautiful
Lets start off with the good points. First of all the graphics for FFXIII are amazing... especially later in the game when you see the more jungle like areas the landscapes are amazingly beautiful. The characters are well detailed and look awesome, all the monsters also look great. SE have really out done themselves with the look of the game...

That being said the game feels like an interactive movie, as if a guy at SE ran into the room a week before release date with a post-it note yelling "oh no this was supposed to be a game".
The games battle engine would be so much better if they just removed the "auto" option and actually made a reason for you to use the paradigms system, every battle you find yourself sitting there just pressing X and not doing anything else, now at this point you think "oh why not just go and do everything manually?" because there is simply no point the auto option 9 times out of 10 will either pick exactly what you where going to pick or pick something better.
The game is extremely easy the only real challenges come after you beat the last boss and go on your monster hunt which mind you is the ONLY side quest in the game and really the only battles that make use of the paradigms system.

The story is average predictable and long which is good but some of the characters will make you want to take the game out and play something else... especially Hope...

If you enjoy movies that pause every 2 minutes and require you to hit play to keep it going this game is perfect for you, if you don't like that then you'll probably dislike this game.

Takes some getting used to...
While most certainly not your typical FF game, it is still worthy of having in your collection.
All the things you have heard about the game being very linear is true. That said, once you get through all of that, it does open up A BIT.
Still, many people buy simply for the story and, although fairly predictable, it's definitely an engaging tale.

In my opinion, the character of Hope is terrible and I found myself cringing time and again whenever he spoke. Picking up this version with the ability to have English subtitles and still listen to the Japanese voice acting relived that issue to a certain extent, but still didn't erase the fact the Hope is just an irredeemably terrible character. Although a strong mage, I felt the urge to keep him out of my party in any situation in which I was able to do so.

Speaking of parties, you cannot actually make your own with all characters available until near the end of the storyline. Again, it's quite a change from the typical FF formula.

Most people will find that the game has really only opened up once the main storyline has been completed and you are free to roam the world. At that point though, only grinding simply to fight stronger enemies and not pick up anything more of the storyline is disappointing and kept me from feeling driven to play more.

Overall, I rate it as an average game that would be easy to put 25 hours or so into, but I don't feel this will be a Final Fantasy that you will want to play again a year or two down the road as most of the prior releases have been.

This is the best English translation version available
Wow, Final Fantasy XIII with Japanese voices and English subtitles? No way, you can't be serious! At least, that was my thought when I heard about this English + Chinese language version. Then, I bought it and saw that it really was a reality... FFXIII with Japanese voices and English subtitles! The text language is automatically detected by the PS3's language settings BTW. As far as translation goes, the language mechanics in the English subtitles are very fluid, but very heavily localized like the American version of "Valkyria Chronicles". So it seems to me that the subtitles were borrowed from Square Enix USA's translation.

TL;DR, This is the definitive FFXIII and the Japanese voices with English subtitles are genuine.

Final Fantasy in the new Era
Its been a long time since the last numbered Final Fantasy game, and after 12's slight disappointment by fans, Square Enix had a lot to make up for. And they did, with interest. Graphics nothing short of beautiful, and while the music doesn't live up to Nobuo Uematsu it is in itself recognisabe and likable. The characters and story sure live up to the Final Fantasy name. The gameplay though, I am sorry to say, is a system that needs work. They took a shot and for the time being it was interesting and creative but not worthy for a Final Fantasy game. Most battles were easily one by simply clicking auto attack, no real strategy required. But as with all Final Fantasy you should also play for the story, not just gameplay, and this one is fantastic!

It's not perfect game, but hating it because it isn't Final Fantasy V or VI would be unfair.

The controls are done well, and actual gameplay is fun.

I'd give it a 4 out of 5.

I had no understanding of japanese at all(jap ver) and I managed to get through it without any walkthroughs and whatnot... battle system is addictive but other than that, just keep holding forward to progress the game.

I never ended up buying a 2nd copy to learn of the story so once you finish it, that's pretty much it. Unlike previous FF titles, they had alot of replay value, unlockable etc

Sure the graphics are superb, but the gameplay just becomes unchallenging and repetitive, storywise is a abit slow... interesting but compared to other FFs it is rather bland...

Dream come true. Be warned about the DLC code!
This is THE VERSION that people like me are looking for. English menus with Japanese voices. Although the English dub isn't as horrible as I thought (except Vanille, who is extremely annoying IMO), this is what I consider the "international" version. The controller that comes with it is beautiful and can be paired with the FF13-designed white PS3. Take note that the special avatar code can only be redeemed if you have an ASIAN/HK PSN account. Be warned.

I was initially in doubt about FF 13 but this game is Amazing......high production values, amazing graphics and a battle system that is surprisingly deep. But most important of all, the story really drives you in unlike previous ff, maybe its because of the games linearlity.. I highly recommend this game to all RPG fans out there and you will be in for a hell of a ride through Cacoon!

FFantastic!
I'm a fan of the FF series and this game didn't disappoint. It took a while to get into the real story and get used to the revamped battles system, but it works well with the game. Gorgeous visuals and smooth gameplay add to the already in-depth storyline. If I had to be critical I would say it is a little too linear for my liking but once you complete the story side of it, there is stil plenty to do to get all the extra/special weapons etc. in the game. Great game, add it to the collection. Just remember to have plenty of coffee or red bull on hand as you'll need it!

Final Fantasy 13 English-chinese-japanese version
Now I couldn't possibly be more pleased with the dubbing of this Final Fantasy version. Language matter aside, the graphics are stunning like no other FF game, not to mention the battle system- it sure does take a bit to get used to, but once you have- it's great.
Delivery was quick, and the game was packaged well.

Bottom line: FF fans- this is a MUST purchase.

Awesome Version of FF13!
This version of the game can read all saved files of North American, European, and Japanese versions of the game. The pros of this version is to experience the game with the Japanese voice actors and the Japanese soundtrack, while being able to play the game (with subtitles and game controls) in a language familiar to you (English or Chinese) depending on the type of PS3 you own.

Love the Extras!
I was bummed when there was no limited edition of FFXIII for the US version. So glad I waited. I LOVE all the extras you get - white DualShock 3, soundtrack, mini artbook, etc. And I read Chinese much better than Japanese, so it's a better version for me than the Japanese version anyway.

The price may not be worth it to some, but it sure is for me. Now that it's sold out too, it's a collector's item. As for the game itself, yeah, it's more of an interactive movie than a full game like the past Final Fantasies, but it's still fun. Getting the original Japanese voices is definitely a plus as well!

Best Possible Version for this Game
Nobody can fully appreciate Final Fantasy XIII without its original Japanese voices. That version is perfect for it allows almost anyone to play the game with understandable subtitles while listening to the original voice track. The game itself might have a few flaws, but is still very enjoyable, especially this version!

If you are a fan of Final Fantasy than this is something you do not want to miss! The fighting system might look a bit confusing when you are not use to it but paying the money and watching the graphics is worth every cent!

Good Game
I wish I had found out about the English+Chinese language version earlier. If you prefer to play a game as it was originally made, then I would suggest getting this game. It has the original JP voiceovers with english menus and subs. The booklet also has an all english portion, so you aren't missing out on anything.

The game itself has great graphics and a very dynamic and customizable battle system. The game is a little linear for my taste, compared to some older FF games, but is still worth a play.

Almost....
If you enjoy Final Fantasy games, there is no question of this purchase....the graphics and animation are the best on the market and they trip to the game's conclusion was nearly worth the price of admission.

...but I personally felt empty after it was all over, there really wasn't much to do other than point a -> point b...and the auto battle concept was a bit too easy for my liking, and the tacked on post game add-in's felt rushed. Not to mention, for such a great looking game *WHERE IS THE SCREENSHOT OPTION?!*

Gripes aside, this game is still worth owning.

Fantastic graphics
The video and gameplay are visually stunning but, unfortunately, the protagonist is a girl with a boyish hairstyle and she's the most unconvincing heroine who lacks the vibes in the Fantasy Fantasy series.

A worthy addition to any PS3 game library
The gameplay is linear and uninvolved in the beginning, which is the only real fault I can find with this game. Play through it for a while and the gameplay gets much deeper while the linear nature is reduced. From that point on it's as outstanding as any of the other good Final Fantasy titles.

Japanese Voice [English + Chinese Subtitles]
This is a must buy for fans who want to experience the game with its native Japanese Audio. I personally think it is way better than the crappy English Dub. Some areas of the dialogue between characters are not correct. But overall the player will be able to read and understand. I understand some Japanese and am able to deduce from right and wrong translations. But definitely worth the buy.

This version is worth picking up.
If you are a fan of the game, but not the English VAs, the Chinese version is worth picking up. The trophies carry over (so you do not have to get them again), as does your save file. The language of the menus and subtitles is all based on the PS3's XMB language as well. The voices will always be in Japanese, regardless though.

As for the game itself, if you are not a fan of linear RPGs, definitely do not bother with it (or atleast rent the game). Whether you hate it or love it, there's no denying that the presentation is fantastic though. As far as graphics and music go, you definitely will not be disappointed in that department.

Japanese voice and english subtitles
I bought this version for the japanese soundtrack and the english subtitles, although the translation is often wrong it didn't bother me since i understand japanese. This is a great game, the fighting system is different but fun, it's a blend of turn based and real time. The character evolution reminded me of FF12 with a job system which is not a bad thing. The game is very long (i spent more than 45h on it and still not cleared) so for 60$ it's totatlly worth it.

I bought the japanese one. It's like a movie. I'm at begining and the CG's are very beauty. The fighting scenes are great and the fighting system by turn is interesting. I think that the game will become more amazing after hours of gamming. I recommend the game. Let's play.

Good game and nice voice over as well
I buy this game since I'm used to Final Fantasy series and also, I buy this Chinese edition since I've tried the US version but preferred the original Japanese audio language with English subtitle.
About the gameplay itself, it's quite good although some people might be put off by the lengthy game introduction and tutorial which actually blended seamlessly in the game.

Awsome Game
The graphics are truly amazing and the game play is fantastic. I am most pleased with the speed that PlayAsia delivered the game to me :) Great job guys.
The battle system takes a little getting used to but overall it is a very easy to master game (but not too easy as to make it boring). I give this game 5 stars, I have been told that it is not as large as previous final fantasy games, but the quality is second to none.
Overall a great game and a must have for any PS3 fans out there.

Better Alternative
For those waiting to buy FF13 and wanting to play with the Japanese Voice with English subtitles, this is truly a must get. The controller is nice, but because of its color and placement of lightning's decal, I can see this easily getting dirty with normal use. It also comes with a voucher for FF13 themed avatar for PS Home, but it only limited to HK and South East Asia.

Since there was a small amount of the deluxe version, this is truly the next best thing.

Play-asia also shipped this pretty fast.

Overall, I am very happy with my purchase.

Absolutely Great
I bought this just because of my PS3. This goes great with the Lightning Edition PS3 and came with a very nice display. I have this along with many of my collectibles. Overall it was worth it to buy. Play Asia also sent it very fast. The game itself has taken hours of my life that I am happy to have spent. I did not play the one that came with this, but had my own copy a long time ago. The alternate artwork was great. Only downside is that when using the controller my right hand blocks the little Lightning design. The card that came with it was awesome and gave me a chocobo avatar. So that was another plus. If I had the chance I would buy this again.

Great cinematics
Some may say the gameplay is restrictive. But what Square did with FFXIII is a great mix to demonstrate the amount of work they put in vs. game flexibility. There are many non-story missions close to the end of the game to open up hours of game play.

Simply fantastic
Awesome story and gameplay so far (Chapter 11), although translation doesn't seem to make alot of sense sometimes but its damn good to get both english and chinese translation.

Best part is Japanese voices and english/chinese subtitles! finally can listen to original voice acting.

Pretty simple storyline really, but they do try to make it look complicated. Easy to follow, unlike alot of RPGs where sometimes you get stuck and dont know where to go, and its usually those times that people quit. This games fixes it but I guess it sacrifices the 'freedom' of doing your own thing.

Gameplay, personally I'd say its awesome and fast paced for these type of tradition RPG despite of bad reviews. People tend to think its more of a button mashing gameplay. I tend to think otherwise. The game gives you to option of taking it easy with automatic assistance and selection of attacks/magic or a more manual strategic gameplay (more efficient against specific enemies). This is great when you want to grind money or level and makes bosses more interesting when you intervene with manual controls.

Graphic is awesome. Enough said and expect to live up when it is Square Enix and Final Fantasy.

The while control is cool with the FFXIII print. Lightning's pink picture is kind of ummm.

Overall definately worthy another title for your PS3 collection.

This version of Final Fantasy XIII is what Final Fantasy is all about. Original Japanese dubs with English subs so you're not missing out on any change of voice acting. It also comes with a FFXIII version conrtoller which looks pretty cool. A worthy collector's set
The box itself is about the size of a GameCube. The items inside are all very meticulously placed and most of the items that you will receive in this package can't be legitimately obtained any where else.

Keep in mind that the special OST CD that comes with this set contains music scores from the alpha and beta builds of Final Fantasy XIII. Yes, you read correctly. These are music scores in their alpha versions or were cut out of the game, hence it's not on the official OSTs.

Make sure to use the PSN ID card and obtain your avatar before it expires. It's an incredibly unique perk that avid Home users would appreciate. If you ever plan to put up this collector's set for resale, expect this card to play a great part in boosting its value. There are four unique version of the PSN card and it's completely random which version you obtain, but the digital avatar reward is selectable by you on the PS Home network.

Finally, the game itself has English subtitles in its normal dialogues and cutscenes while retaining the Japanese voice overs. If you wanted to hear the original voice overs and vocal scores, then the Asia version of Final Fantasy XIII is for you.

The Lightning edition controller is pretty much the same as any other controller. While the image of Lightning can be easily mistaken as being applied onto the controller like a sticker, but careful examination would reveal that the image is indeed printed on, but due to the white background of the controller the borders are more noticeable.

The poster isn't that big of a deal, it's found inside the OST CD's manual. It unfolds accordingly into a moderate sized poster. It's too bad that Square-Enix didn't utilize an unique picture for this poster and I feel that it serves as a detracting mark in an otherwise decent offering.

The game itself has two strong points. The combat system and the storyline. Both are well polished and engaging enough to sweep new comers and veteran gamers into its pacing.

Final Fantasy XIII is far more cinematic and heavily story based than its predecessors so far. This is due to Square-Enix's attempt to try to tap into Western-style story pacing and doing something different. Whether or not this succeeds or fails in your eyes depends mainly on your personality.

Only version that gives you authentic japanese VO with multiple language subtitles!
Final Fantasy 13 wasn't exactly the best of the series, but it did try to streamline the hardcore JRPG game design to cater for the newcommers to embrace a cinematic experience. Although this wasn't pulled off that well, presentational queue was certainly there.

Now the asia version is released with multi region subtitles (triggered by your region setting on PS3) while retaining the original Japanese voice acting.

Game looks great, plays smooth with streamlined systems and now you have the chance to play with the original Japanese voice acting which makes it feel light & day to the english release.

Game contains english menu/subtitles as well as korean.

Chinese version!
Playing this in Chinese language is a blast, too bad no Chinese voice overs though. Would love to hear Lightning & co talk in Chinese.
As for the game, setting the system language to Chinese will allow to play using Chinese subtitles and Japanese dub. This version also supports loading saves from any other version of the game. But it only works one way, other versions can't load saves from this version.

Japanese voice and Eng Sub!!!
This is the definitive version!!! I bought an English version on March, but I was angry how it didn't have Japanese voice. No matter how good English voice is, the Japanese one is better.

Anyway, after I heard about this, I instantly ordered it! and yes, it worked! I can now play the game with Japanese voice and English subtitles. Furthermore, this version supports save data from US, EU, JAPAN and Asia copy, so if you've already played a lot and don't want to replay, you can continue it without problem :)

Overall, PERFECT!

Beginning is really boring
I was pretty pissed off with this game at first, what with all the hype surrounding this game. However, once you pass Chapter 3, and the battles cant be won by mere battle mashing (paradigm shifts required), it then really starts to get more interesting.

Anyway to to tell everyone who is bored to tears at the beginning to persevere till at least Chapter 4 before deciding to put this game down.

On another note however, a lot of people are complaining that the game is too linear. Well at least for me, I feel that is a refreshing change, no need to think which skill tree to develop and all that, just keep moving on and on and on, aka corridor-game.

Overall, I still say this is a good game. Go get it or at least lend from a friend to play it.

Deluxe Pack = Value for money
Even though I already own the game, I couldn't resist picking up this due to the great value. You get the game with JP dub and ENG subs, a great looking controller, HDMI cable and a few extra tidbits. Absolute must buy for any fan of the game... if you can find one...

Excellent Game and even better with the Lightning controller
while the game has been reviewed to death i might as well focus on the content of the box.
while box is only made of cardboard, still holds together well and folds out to reveal some nice items
houses a sample of the FFXIII sound track and a booklet with some art work in it as well
the game (obviously) and with original voices and soundtrack of the Japan version of the game
main item is the lightning edition controller, which is a very nice addition to any PS3, looks nice and the pink picture of lightning on right handle is done very well

overall a great package! :)

Fantastic.
The pack is wonderful, The controller is great, the Lightning artwork on the hand is fantastic, and there in FFXIII printed on the back under the Dual Shock logo, a very nice touch!

Note that the Avatar card only works with a Hong Kong PSN account.

Grab one b4 you miss out, as I missed out on the Deluxe edition with the soundtrack + HDMI.

Thank you Play-Asia!

As a final fantasy franchise, i'd say it's doing quite well, both on the graphics and gameplay. That is, however, when i look at it from the perspective of a RPG fan, i feel that this game lacks in the way that the "exploring" element is gone. not only is there no shop, towns are just clusters of building where u can do much other than march through them.

Well, I've waited a really long time to for this game to come out, so I had a lot of expectations. And, finally, it came out... But it wasn't what I expected. As always in FF, there is a good story and very beautiful graphics, sometimes it's hard to tell if it's pre-rendered or in-game graphics. But, it's too straightforward for a rpg, you can't even miss a chest.. Also, a very simple battle system, don't know if it's the "minus"; gamers, who are new to jrpg might find it good.
In the whole, a game.

I wanted this game badly but not for the ticketed price in the stores. So, play-asia once again delivers with a great price and the game is phenomenal. If you haven't play the final fantasy series before this is not a problem as the story is easy to follow and the graphics are out of this world. Buy it you will not regret the purchase.

Too beautiful! Love the packaging for the Deluxe pack. I love FFXIII, flows and all, it's my most favorite FF to date. And playing this with Chinese subtitle and Japanese dub is like playing a different game all together. Still prefer English, although Mayaa Sakamoto as Lightning is also very fitting. I love FF and so this FF13 would be nothing but also my personal collections. It show me how good SE perform the HD on my PS3, the graphic and sound are ultimately splendid, not only just the movies. But, that's all the pros, because I also see nothing just movies inside the game because it's too linear, not like FF7, FF8 or FF10. I personally like the characters design, but not the storyline. Sorry SE, this game only worth for collecting, but for touching my heart, you got 3 of 5 point.

The most beautiful game
This is probably the most beautiful game I have ever played, but it's not the best Final Fantasy game that I've played for a number of reasons.

For one the story is the most confusing and convoluted of all the Final Fantasies, and two the game is far too linear for it's own good, and three the battle system sort of runs on auto-pilot.

But saying that I recommend anyone should play it because despite its flaws it's still a thrilling adventure.

I would give it three and a half stars.

Different.. but beautiful and fun to play
This (English language version) is.. in English.. so you don't have to worry.

Otherwise the biggest flaw with this game which everyone complains about is that the game-play is linear. This is very true but not at all as bad as everyone complains. I prefer not wondering around lost most of the time accepting quests etc and actually playing the game when I have time.

The graphics is truly amazing and you "feel" the cyber-punk or steam-punk atmosphere that made the previous games so magical for me.

The next FF release will be the online MMO which will be completely different. So you might have to wait a couple of years if you want the old FF with non-linear gameplay.

Must play for FF fans and new gamers alike
FF XIII is somewhat simpler than previous FF games. I wouldn't say it's the best FF game, but it is the first FF for the PS3.

Graphics are great, music is good, gameplay is good. Lack of Japanese voice over was a tad disappointing, but the English VA's did a decent job.

Bottom-line: Still a must play for all FF and jrpg fans.

Linear and mediocre characterisation, but beautiful graphics
There is no denying this is the best looking RPG game for the PlayStation 3 for 2010.

But it is let down by a very linear game style, making it hard to get a sense of the whole game world outside the pre-determined path you almost always have to take.

Supposedly it gets less linear later on in the game but it is exactingly painful.

Many of the characters are very dull. They're just not likeable compared to the honourable Cloud from FFVII, the quiet non-outgoing Squall from FFVIII, the eager wannabae space pirate Vaan from FFXII or even the pure hearted Yuna from FFX.

Instead we get cold, angry elite ex-soldier Lightning!

Maybe our expectations have risen too high... for the final Final Fantasy game, it's not too bad but not good either.

DANCING ON A RAINBOW
If that sounds awesome to you then you may like this game. But dancing on a rainbow (one of the songs in this game) does not sounds like an awesome time for a FF game. The characters are lame!!! So over the top dramatic. The story is such a bore. There is no exploration. You walk in a straight line the ENTIRE GAME!!! You get points to level your character up, but there is a cap. A cap that expands very slowing through out the game. So there is basically no leveling up. You can level weapons and accessory up, but its takes a great deal of effort and when you find a new weapon with much better extra abilities it makes you feel like you just wasted all your time, money, and components leveling up an inferior weapon. This is by far the worst Final Fantasy in the entire series (i never played 11)

vinni.okami (2) on 13, May. 2010 05:59 (HKT)
Very good RPG game, for those used to JRPGs
Overall:
The game, as a whole, is really good, with some very complex systems that can keep you glued to the screen and one of the best graphics in a console, ever. Unfortunately, those who are used to western RPGs will think it is all too linear a with too many story events.

Graphics: 5
One of the best, or the best, console graphics to appear on a console. The level of detail of both the monsters and characters and the world is impressive, and apart from some landscapes that looks just like a big corridor with natural walls, it is able to suck you in easily.

Playability: 4
A very good battle system will keep you searching for new strategies and combinations of paradigms (the roles of your party characters) to overcome powerful foes, some of them requiring quite a bit of clever thinking (or supreme patience to grind for EXP). The level up system is quite similar to that of Final Fantasy 10, with a little bit of FF Tactics. Each character has a grid of skills and stats that you can increase by spending crystogen points, the game equivalent of experience. These grids are role based, so you need to think about being good on one thing, or a little bad in all.

Sound: 3
Apart from a few good songs, the game has a lot of boring music that is too simple for a series known for its music quality. The sound effects are good in overall, but like all RPG, you feel tired of listening the same songs over and over when you fight the same monster.

Story: 5
A really good story that tells of fate and destiny. One of the best Final Fantasy stories, with some of the most loveable characters in FF history.

gukguk (1) on 12, May. 2010 12:53 (HKT)
A bit dull, but enjoyable nonetheless
Storyline: ***
Story is easy to be absorbed throughout the game, lovable personality of each character, story developments are a bit monotonous for its constant event that force you to follow the game itself without freedom, in addition that the outcome (ending) is major disappointment.

Graphic: *****
Obviously, a magnificently hi-tech graphic and animation in the game, as should be expected from all the development done in a very long time.

Gameplay: ****
As what all reviewer has stated, first 4-6 hours is major torture as player is forced to venture through a dead straight and linear path, but after going through that, gameplay is a lot better.

Music: *
Personally, this series has one of the worst music ever in Final Fantasy series; the whole soundtrack essentially uses a piece of music and rearranged in a way that it can be used for other part of the game. And most importantly, certain track just don't fit the situation/mood. Although most of the song is failure to me, I enjoy 1 track in chapter 11, "The Archylte Steppe".

In-game system: ****
Compared to previous Final Fantasy, I would say this series is simplified, a lot, e.g. crystarium, weapon, item, etc. the cryptic and complex attributes are all simplified to a straightforward naming and number.
In addition to new feature, such as "shroud", ATB segmentation, in-battle job-switching (Paradigm shift) and etc.

Summary:
A must get for Final Fantasy enthusiast, new experience for RPG-player, overestimate the graphic but overall does not deserve big applause for some flaws within the game.

Thsi game is massive!!
I had read all the reviews stating how the game was very linear, and for the first 10 chapters of the game, I understand what they all meant. It was excrutiatingly linear, and I was almost angry with the developers for doing this. But once I reached chapter 11, the game changed completely, offering a massive open world, tonnes of side quests and immense replay value, even after the game is completed. I cannot speak highly enough of this game.
The graphics are impeccable, the level of detail is astounding. The sounds can get a little repetetive, but nothing you wouldnt expect from the FF series.
In the beggining I also found the battle system to be very flawed, until it completely opened up after chapter 11, and let me tell you, it is one of the most complex, detailed and rewarding battle systems yet.
The story is a little hard to understand, but the datalogs really help you to understand what is going on. Overall, this game has taken me on an epic journey through some of the best landscapes in any game, and a complete package to satisfy any Jap RPG fan for a very, very long time. So far I have clocked 70+ hours and have still not unlocked everything!! Have fun with this one.
And as usual Playasia delivered the product within days and provided me with outstanding service throughout the transaction. This was my first purchase through Playasia, and I was so impressed, I have bought again and again. Thank you

Best RPG for PS3
Final Fantasy XIII, everyone would most likely agree it's not perfect, but it's still a great game in its own right if you keep an open mind. I really REALLY enjoyed this game, more than previous installments. I love all the characters, minus Snow (who is like the worst character in any FF), the graphics in some areas are unbelievable, the production value and level of polish are through the roof. Few games can come close to this great care SE has put in FFXIII, and the shortcomings it has are not enough to overshadow the positives. 121 hours in, the most hours I've ever put in for games this generation, and I'm still highly enjoying it. There's really no reason to pass this game up, unless you just dislike good games in general.

Beautiful...
Is the first word that came to my mind once I put it in the console... and no more. I'm not a huge fan of the FF franchise (I prefer the "Tales of" from NAMCOBANDAI) but I admit that is a giant in the game industry. A long waited game that I just bought it because videos were awesome.
History doesn't offer something new. Full of cliches and dialogues we have heard before but with a solid battle system. The weakest side of the game is it's linear history. I'm used to travel anywhere in RPG's but with this game... I don't know, felt some unfreedom.
Anyway, it's a pretty good game and you'll have to inverst a long time to unlock all the secrets here. I've played for more than 40 hours and I still have a long way to unlock everything.

One of best games on PS3!
Briliant graphics will blow your eyes when you'll see this games at the first time!
Designers have done a grate job to create this incredable picture. But there is a little dissapoitment because of too linear gameplay (at leat 1/3 of the game)

Great game
Final Fantasy XIII (apparently) follows a difference approach from previous games, with what has been described as a linear approach. I'm of the opinion that it's not such a bad thing. It gives you time to get into the battle mechanics and the whole world. I realize that some people won't think that this is a good thing (FF fanatics in particular), but as a person who's only played one of the games previously (FFX), I didn't mind it so much.

The graphics in this game are also something to behold. Really blurs the line between FMV and in-game graphics.

Great as the name say!
Graphics toooo awesome... as u expect from SQUARE to the PS3, but its too linear, u dont make choices, just kill and keep kiling to the end!
But its Final Fantasy, who dont want to play the first final fantasy to PS3!? The best thing its the item to FF14 that u get, and the chance to play the beta.

Brilliant, but flawed
The battle system is fantastic, the story engaging and the graphics are some of the finest to have graced the PS3 so far. However, the cinematic storytelling comes at the expense of the gameplay. If you don't mind traveling in a straight line from A to B with little to no deviation from the main path for the first 20 hours or so, then you will love FF XIII. For those of us who have become accustomed to the sense of freedom that modern RPG's (both Western and Japanese) have given us, the first half of this game can sometimes feel like a chore to play.

Great game - A few things to think about
Hi all, this game is great, although, it does fall short in respect to the progression in the game. This game is extremely linear. However, the weapon-upgrade system and the leveling I do enjoy. The graphics at 720dpi are amazing. Simply amazing. I did have one problem though. This game was said on the website to be in stock, however, it did not ship for almost a month later. Perhaps they didn't update the website? Regardless, this is a great game and Play-Asia is virtually flawless in terms of service. A+++++ Recommendation!

Too linear
Plenty of eye candy for your general gamer but square have remove what made FF games fun. No towns. no massive world maps. Game was some what fun to play but still no where near the best ff in the series. I would call this more of a action RPG then a RPG.

Awesome
i'm afraid to admit i haven't played FF since about number 7. but i've been playing other jrpgs since, most recently lost odyssey and star ocean (which were good games). but this game knocks the socks off the others. sure, there were familiar themes, but the battle system rocks, the graphics are sweet, and the journey is fun. give 'er folks, certainly worth the buy.

This is the Final Fantasy game you have been waiting for. It is amazing to look at and to play. The battle system is second to none and revolutionizes the system used in older FF games. The storyline was cohesive and I definitely did not think it to be too linear. Have fun with this one.

Judge it for yourself!
The expectations for a new FF is way too high! I tried to ignore all the negativity surrounding this game and just try it out for myself and I'm glad I did because I LOVED this game!
I have been a FF fan since the first one on NES and while there are some of the more "traditional" rpg elements missing from this game (towns, interaction with NPCs, money and buying new weapons/equipment was almost non-existant/pointless, etc.), it is still a solid addition in the FF series. The graphics are amazing, the story and characters are interesting and there are a lot of side quests to do that will double your playing time after finishing the story.
My only big complaint for the English version was that they should have included the Japanese audio (there was more than enough room on the PS3's BR) as the voice acting for a few characters was a little weak.
All in all, I would highly recommend this game to a fan of JRPGs.

Final fantasy 13 is a great game that compliments the final fantasy series but it was a bit linear. the exploring doesn't start till later in the game. but is a great game with a rich story, you will fall in love with each of the characters. battle system is fast pace, almost real-time.

Final Fintasy without everything we love
I'm not sure who decided to change EVERYTHING about the game series we have all come to love, but the current iteration is without ability to choose your own path, make serious decisions in battle, or deviate from the main story (i.e. side-quests). That said, the scenery is beautiful, the story is enthralling, and the characters are well developed and human.

Be aware of these things before you buy.

Declining reputation
FFXIII had turned away completely from the classic hit such as FFVII. All I can summaries is beautiful graphic with crappy gameplay. If I want to see beatiful graphic I'd just watch Avatar. The first few hours of the game, It's boring and it just pains me to see FF series quality just dropped from series to series and whats more dissapointing is there's no world exploration and no minigames.

Same Brand, Different Product
Streamlined down to the bone, Final Fantasy XIII is a bold experiment, but perhaps misleading. In a game where you rarely control your own party, are often denied the ability to veer off a set path, and are limited to combat only, albeit lightning fast and at times breathtaking, FF13 possesses the least role playing qualities of any of the previous titles. There are gorgeous cutscenes where your characters move more freely than they ever do during game play, and the story, while dire and risk-taking at the onset, settles quickly into the player sending their character forward to reach goals on a mini-map. The six playable characters all hold hints of maturity, but by the end are ground into the same weirdly optimistic ghouls that the last few entries have.
However, The reduced emphasis on grinding (aside from one specific area), a difficulty curve that grows signifigantly, but doesn't overly penalize, and a brilliant new visual approach would definetely enchant newcomers to the series who have fewer expectations.

Good game
I was waiting long for this game since it was first announced. However, I have to say that it was not as a expected, the game was too linear, and there is practically no freedom for any of the choices. If you have no problem with a linear RPG, you should still try it out. The battle system is cool and fun.

its ok......
I agree with what a lot of people have said about this game here. It is very linear and in my opinion directed at kids and young adults. its more for new fans of FF rather than the older ones. Dialogue is so immature. But it does have its good points. Battle system isnt too bad, although it could have been fine tuned, so that you actually do use all the characters. Its really just ok.

Not what i expected, but.....
Well, Final Fantasy XIII is a good game, with great history, explendid graphics and nice characters, but i think i would actualy classify it as an Action RPG, and not a pure RPG. The game is a bit linear and the fact that you only control just one character at battles, the others would just act with their own will. Of course you can give some commands and assign some roles they would follow, but it isnt the same thing. Thats why i would call it an Action RPG, instead RPG. Considering this, for Final Fantasy fans or not, it is yet a good choice to have.

It's great, but not quite FF
It's not a terrible game by any stretch of the imagination, certainly it's a good game, but it's not the second coming of FFVII either. FFVII, much like many anime series, was great in helping you to feel with the characters, and not just for the protaganists, and in this way FFXIII is simply just not as engaging, nor the story as compelling.

Certainly a good game though, the graphics are right to be praised and the music is one of the areas that does pertain to reach the lofty heights of the great FF titles.

This is probably a title more suited to fans of FF than those who aren't already keen on the JRPG genre. For new people to the JRPG experience, I would highly recommend Valkyria Chronicles instead.

Nice game if you don`t mind linear adventures.
FFXIII was beautiful and had the same excellent production as the previous entries in the series. The graphics are at times amazing and the sound is also excellent.
My only real issue with the game (and it is a big issue for me) is that it made you follow a pre-determined path with almost no freedom at all until almost the end of the game. If you like this kind of game play that is so prevalent in JRPGs, definitely check out FFXIII. If you prefer non-linear stories, however, you may want to think twice before you buy this one.

Innovation
This round of Final Fantasy is built for mass appeal. Learning the battle system is a bit tedious and spans a good 20 hours of the game and while the game is fairly linear, that is only true in the beginning.

This game is Epic, it is long, it has some amazing CG and it is by no means better or worse than any of it predecessors.

But it is on the PS3 and it is GORGEOUS and FUN.

You will like it if you like previous titles and if you are new to FF, it will rock you!!!

Square Enix hits home with this magnificent JRPG.
Long before the advent of the "Western" RPG archetype, Square was doing what they do best - creating JRPGs of immense scale and unmatched caliber in the form of the series gamers worldwide have come to know and love - Final Fantasy. With a fastidious eye for detail and an attention to lore that transcends the very meaning of pedantry, Square lovingly babied and crafted the very genre of true JRPGs, every release further molding and shaping it, lifting it to new heights.

They have done it yet again with Final Fantasy XIII.

Presented with a linearity that can only be described as refreshing, Square ushers old fans and new players alike through a journey in time - a journey that bathes players in the radiance of past Final Fantasy titles, one that encapsulates the very best Square has had to offer since their inception many years ago. It is an ode, a tribute to riveting storytelling and courageous adventure that plays out over untold hours of rapturous melancholy. Final Fantasy XIII makes players forget that they are playing a game, immersing them into the wondrous world of Cocoon - replete with stunning visuals and fantastic fauna - and perhaps more importantly, establishing a connection with characters that overflow with an emotive energy rarely, if ever, seen in pretender titles. Topped off with a battle system that combines the strategy of FFX's CTB system with the furious pace of the series' traditional ATB system and played to the symphonic melody of a gorgeous, "feast for your ears" soundtrack, Final Fantasy XIII is a game, nay, a phenomenon that will capture the hearts of true JRPG aficionados for years to come.

Shiny
This game is really really pretty. The graphics are just stunning. Gameplay wise is good so far. Battles rely on strategy instead of pure levelling up. The skill learning system could be better. It's a little linear for too long, feels kind of like the intro to the game is lasting hours and hours. However it keeps the story rolling so you don't feel like you're doing a giant linear dungeon crawl. It's a pretty good game overall.

ff13 english version
there has been a considerable lack of love on the interweb for ff13 ever since it's release, very little of which i feel is justified.
let's address the first: the game's linearity. This is true, in many respects, but consider that i put this game down after over 90 hours of playing with 3 side-quests left undone. In most ff games, which often offer more gameplay time, the majority of those hours are spend mindlessly "grinding" to increase your stats. The designers of this game seem to have tried to remedy that, if you consider it something that requires remedying. the oportunity to grind stats is only really made available well into the game, and in my opinion, i didn't really welcome it! I enjoyed the game opening up, for a time, but like i said, i have left 3 side-quests unfinished because i had "ground" all the joy out of the game.
It looks beautiful, inconcievably so. The sound is fantastic. Battles are great. The story is the strongest since the 7th or 9th installments in the franchise. I'm sure time will remember ff13 as one of the best, and most unique in the franchise. I certainly do.

A Must for FF fans, recommended for any Japanese style RPGs fan
I am also the one who prefer western Deep and Open RPGs such as Fallout serie, Star war Kotor, you know, Bioware stuff. But for the Japanese RPGs, nothing intruduced me to the epic world of story telling like the FF serie.

So if you are new to the Japanese RPGs world, keep in mind that there arent any moral dicision to be made, no customizing your charactor and there are no skill tree to shape your main character the way you would in diablo.

What FF have to offer though, is the story telling and epic adventure that will consume your evening night after night. And FF 13 didnt let me down.

So if you like watching anime or animation movie, you can sitback, relax and warp into the world of great adventure, remarkable characters, like you would with a good book or a fantasy film. There is no pressure or stress in this.

I enjoyed pretty much just watching the CG and listen to the game's great sountrack. There is much product value in this game.

When you throw out what works, things stop working.
Keeping true only to the "lets have great graphics" motto, Square seem to have thrown out the entirety of what makes 'Final Fantasy' what it is. Massive worlds, great stories, interesting characters, and all the hidden little nooks and crannies you can find by -exploring- what's on offer.

Here, we're offered a corridor, a pretty one, but nothing more. We're refused any choice whatsoever in our party until 2/3rds of the way through the game, and all the joy of exploration has been -entirely- removed.

I truly hope this is nothing more than a very bad mistake, and not a sign of things to come from this franchise.

Good game! I am surprised!
Well let's keep it short:

Good Stuff:

Great Graphics (the best on the genre)
Cool Battle System and fast paced
Some nice characters
Good soundtrack
Nice CG's
Great evolution on the characters personality

The "so-so" stuff:

Some characters
Some limitations on the battle system

The Bad Stuff

Some times the story can be a pain...

And I dont know if it is a good thing or a bad thing, but for me it is normal:

The game is 80% linear.. some like, some hate this..

In the end:

If you like JRPG's Buy it NOW!
If you like RPG's give it a shot!
If you never played an JRPG, well that's your chance!
Anyway even if you dont have a good felling on this game, you should try it!

It is the best Final Fantasy? No! It is a good game? Definitely! It could be better? Absolutely!

it was ok
definitely better than it's predecessor, ffxii by a long shot. however, there's a quiet a few things wrong with this game, compared to other final fantasys. for one, there are virtually no npcs. while as ffxii was plagued with too MANY npcs, this one suffers from the LACK of npcs. there's seriously like maybe 3? 5? npcs throughout the whole game. To understand the story, you have to access the in-game glossary, and unless you read it each time it's updated, you won't understand what's going on. The story feels like it's just thrown at you, and then you have characters who you can't even like. Honestly, this is definitely not one of the better final fantasys. Square Enix took a different turn with this one, and it wasn't the right turn. the final fantasy series is praised for its diversity. This one is anything BUT diverse, linear from the start to the finish.

Great game as an RPG
Great game as an RPG. But does not deserve the title as Final Fantasy. Of course the graphics is good. It's a 2010 game from Square. If they did not make this as a Final Fantasy title. I would give it 5 stars. Great game if you like RPGS but if you're a hardcore FF fan. Don't think it as an FF series and you'll enjoy it.
