description
The Bond world isn't just about good and evil. It's full of different degrees of good and evil. As the spurned GoldenEye, you've been kicked out of MI6 for excessive brutality while thwarting a Fort Knox heist. Cut loose from a respectable career, you delve into a global-gangland war to extract your revenge on Dr. No, who relieved you of your eye. Not that you hold a grudge or anything.

In this double-fisted first-person shooter, you play as the one-eyed rogue who plays by his own rules. GoldenEye's ally, Auric Goldfinger, took the exiled agent under his wing. After GoldenEye lost his eye, Goldfinger designed a synthetic eye for him. This eye gives GoldenEye not only regained sight but special abilities as technology advances. Throughout the game, GoldenEye receives updates for his synthetic eye. MRI vision lets him see enemies hiding behind solid structures, and EM Hack lets him manipulate electronics and weapons, among other upgrades.

Despite all the nifty eye candy, the real olive in this martini is the double-fisted shooting action. Although some guns are so big they require GoldenEye to use two hands, our heroic villain can usually maintain a weapon in each hand. You'll press the R Button to shoot the gun in his right hand (there's always a gun in that hand) and the L Button either tosses a grenade or fires the second gun. With a gun in each hand, the weapon combinations are seemingly endless, as long as you can find the weapon to begin with. Some weapons are placed within levels, while others become available when you snuff an enemy. Picking up a weapon is simple: press the A button and either L or R, depending on what hand you want to hold the weapon in.

The intricately designed levels add the knockout blow to this masterpiece. Sir Ken Adam, the set designer for several Bond films (most famously, the volcano lair in You Only Live Twice), provided input on the environments. The levels have a very Bond feel. Booby traps are everywhere. The environments are multi-tiered, with upper floors for gunmen to shoot from. The ground levels provide plenty of machinery for cover. Outdoor environments send you zipping from rooftop to rooftop.

Additionally, the flunkies aren't as flunky as most cinematic criminals. As much as you'd like them to stand out in the open and take a couple bullets for the team, they don't. They spread out, take cover and make your job a hard one. And these stiffs don't hold a small grenade to the real stars of the show, legendary Bond villains such as Oddjob, Dr. No, Goldfinger, Scaramanga and Pussy Galore.

Share your love of this game with friends by inviting them over for split-screen action. The game includes more than 20 multiplayer arenas. Compete in both free-for-all and objective-based missions. It should be criminal to have this much run-and-gun fun.

A straight-up first-person shooter, GoldenEye: Rogue Agent limits its dramatic choices to Rifle or Shotgun? It doesn't follow through on the admittedly cool premise of playing as someone truly evil. There would be much more gut-level drama if you were given a choice to, say, turn back from the dark side and rejoin the good guys.

eh.
I give it some credit, though none the less, Bond is always better.
