Y's I & II Eternal Story is a remake from the PC-engine. The PS2™ version includes two new characters that cannot be found in the original version. The first is Misha, a genius painter, and the second is Jeanne, a genius musician. You can meet these two characters in the Dream World.
There are two game modes, one is the Original, the other one is the new Eternal Story Mode. The Eternal Story Mode includes a new combat system called Alternatiing Equipment System (AES), the attack method is the same as the original game, but you can add special effects to the attacks by wearing different armors and rings, such as slow and poison effects.

It was good when it was released
Ys series is basically an overhead action-RPG similar to NES and SNES Zelda titles with simplified battle system.
Ys Eternal's PS2 version could have been better.
Basically this is a port of the Ys Eternal for the PC, and due to this it suffers from its greatest shortcoming; perhaps the worst renders of Ys music to this day. It's midi quality when it could be better and lacks depth that PC-Engine version and the later PSP version had. PSP version generally had some kickass music renders.
However, the game gets one point back by having ingenious addition to battle system, where older weapons aren't as useless as you might think. By switching to Short Sword with a shoulder button, you can stun an enemy and then proceed to ram them with Tulwar or other stronger sword. I love how Ys has a simple and straight battle system, but this kind of small addition suddenly creates slightly more depth and overall more enjoyable experience.
Language barrier is very low and menus are simple. Loading times may get to your nerves, but they aren't atrocious. It's not the largest game out there, but it might take few evenings to ram it completely through.
This is more for those who want to collect games rather than those who simply want a single version of said game. I'd recommend PSP or Windows version over this, but price vice second-hand PS2 version is as god choice as any other, that is if you can manage to stand the midi music.

Awesome remake
This is a great game. The gameplay is simple and unbelievably fast, the graphics are gorgeous, the music is wonderful, and it's just plain fun!

Ys I & II at its best!
Yup! YS I & II, the legendary RPG you kept on hearing over and over from veteran player, genuine 2d old school action! quality gameplay combined with the best ever soundtrack in video gaming history!
if you consider yourself a RPG fan, then theres absolute no reason to overlook this title!
if you had a hard time finding the turbo-duo or PC version, heres your chance! with the help of digicube, Falcom's legendary RPG is now ported over to the PS2! with enhanced graphics and extra goodies! BUY IT even if you don't know much japanese(though recommended that you do have a competent japanese level)!
