Basking in the popularity and success of the first series of Fushigi Yuugi, the manga artist Watase Yuu created other spin offs, and Genbu gaiden is one of them. This dating simulation is based on the storyline of this spin off product and tells the story of Kobayashi Mariko another girl who ended up in the book.
Mariko is a normal teenage girl with a crush on her childhood friend Takumi, her ordinary life is brought to an end because of a mysterious mirror. Mariko accidentally triggers the opening of the portal to the world of shijin tenchi shou and has fallen into it with Takumi.
Due to her similarities with Genbu's priestess, Oda Takiko, Kutou's general mistook her as the priestess and attacks her. Just on the brink of time, the real priestess appears with her protectors and rescued Mariko, but she was separated from Takumi in the chaos.
To return to her own world safely and to find Takumi, Mariko has decided to join Takiko on her journey to wake Genbu. Mariko is reunited with Takumi on the way, but he has lost his memories of her and has become one of Kutou's assasins.
