description
Fushigi no Dungeon 2: Furai no Shiren DS (call it Shiren the Wanderer) is a Japanese-styled roguelike, in the vein of Nethack, Ancient Domains of Mystery (ADoM), or Moria. You, the player, play a young man in a rain hat named Shiren, who is one a quest for the Golden Condor. Something like that. You're not going to get it because odds are you do not actually speak Japanese. On the surface, the game appears to be a typical action-RPG; its appearance belies its turn-based nature. You cruise through various randomly-generated dungeons, slaying a large variety of increasingly difficult enemies that will stop at nothing to kill you. Status effects play a very large role throughout Shiren's adventures, and a keen understanding of what every item does and how it effects you and your adversaries is more important to success than high attack stats and a boatload of HP. When you are in a dungeon, every move you make, item you use, and every thrust of your sword uses up one turn, and -- thankfully -- your enemies are also bound by this rule. Because of this, every one of your button presses (or stylus taps, if you're into it) has significance.
You will die. A lot. And every time Shiren is slain, you must start the adventure over from the beginning, having lost any of the levels gained and items acquired. Fortunately, you can save anywhere, and store your important or useful items in a warehouse that stays with you no matter how many times you perish in the wilderness. Every time you die, your adventure will be recorded in the town ledger, like a high score table in any old arcade game. What's interesting about this is that you get to watch a recording of how you died, and form strategies based on what you observed. Then, you start over again.
