I can't even read Japanese - still one of the best games I've ever played.

I'm a huge fan of EarthBound, and the MOTHER series in general, so I was expecting much from this third and final(?) entry in the series. Not only did it meet my expectations, it surpassed them. This game is truly touching. That said, I looked up translation guides online to have a greater understanding of the story, and ... [read more...]

description
Mother 3 is set in a land called the Nowhere Islands. Chaos ensues in the Nowhere Islands after an invasion by the Pig Mask Army, humans in uniforms that resemble pigs. The Pig Mask Army is named for its creator, The "Pig King". The Pig Mask Army slowly constructs a police state, while performing bizarre experiments on the land's flora and fauna. The invaders also introduce new technology and infrastructure to the islands. The story unfolds in different chapters. The various chapters of the story record the trials and tribulations of a boy named Lucas, his family, and friends, who reside in Tazmily Village and band together to rid Nowhere Island of the Pig Army's influence.

Mother 3 starts out very differently from the first two Mother games. The game is set up into eight different chapters, much like Dragon Quest IV. Instead of focusing on a group of children, it chronicles the story and adventures of Lucas and his family, and the story switches perspective during each chapter. (For example, the first half of the game is played as Flint, Duster and Salsa, but the rest of the game is played as Lucas.) Nowhere Island also changes dramatically due to the influence of the Pig Army, transforming from a simple low-tech rural society to a more modern 21st Century infrastructure that's similar to the first two Mother games. (Hence the game's theme of nature vs. technology) The game also features a more traditional top-down RPG perspective, instead of the oblique projection used in the first two games.

Must buy!!!!

This game deserves 5 PK LOVEs
take your average Happy story, Twist it to somethinga little bit darker, throw in a a few laughs, a pig army (not really pigs) , Psychokinetic powers, a band based on AC/DC, and a dance that an old man does to open a secret door that resembles a mouth and what do u get? what u get my friend, is MOTHER 3...and my god is it beautiful. XDD I say dont even bother waiting for an overseas version, if u want originality, get it in its pure state, and not something where they'll change it to their own appeal. (^^)v anyway brilliant game 5 PK LOVES out of 5!!! oh and Congratulations to Lucas, the main character of MOTHER 3, making it into Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii!

    Great, funny JRPG
Very funny game. It even talks to the player (which can be a downer in some ways though) if a funny tone such as "Just imagine you had something like, like, a B button! Hold it down and release the B button." Of course, this is in Japanese though. One of the great things is there are 2 save slots!!! This is very useful. One file for just beating the game and another file for stuff like translating. It's all very cool. The battle system is very easy to learn, but you can always go online to find out what is what. Also, barely any kanji is used so it's much easier to read.

    Amazing Game! No Japanese Required!
I just finished Mother 3 and let me tell you, this game is well deserved to be called a Mother title. It stays true to the Earthbound-style game play, graphics, and music and the story is clearly amazing.

My understanding of japanese is at a minimal, and I didn't need to know any at all to play through the game in its entirety. The game depicts itself so well visually that if you're an Earthbound fan thats debating about picking this up due to the language barrier, do not hesitate! On top of the very heavy visuals, there are countless of faqs online that will give you step-by-step instructions on how to get through any part of the game your stuck in!

I clocked in at about 38 hours on the game with about 5 or so hours of various exploring. This game is one solid RPG that will leave you with one of the most spectacular stories you'll ever play.

    Amazing!
The Mother franchise is my favorite franchise of all time. Mother 3 is like a work of art. It combines a great storyline with a quirky cast of characters. It has a great RPG fighting system not matched by any other game. Combine that with play-asia's incredible service and it is a must have!!

    The Epitomizing Mother Game
I can't say I've been an Earthbound/Mother fan all my life, but when I recently picked up Earthbound/Mother 2 for SNES, I was hooked! I bought Mother 3 hoping for the same off the wall humor, lovable cast, and amazing storyline and I certainly wasn't disappointed. This game not only has everything that made Mother 2 great, but does it even better in my opinion. I may not understand the Japanese language, but that didn't stop me from getting emotional in certain scenes. If you're looking for a not so typical gaming experience that really pulls you into its story, buy this game right away!! ^_^

Great game, Great graphics, truly a sequel!!!!
I played this game but I havent bought it niether have owned it, I really want to buy it but then I think if I buy it and after weeks and months NOA (Nintendo Of America) announces a U.S. release in english, I would smash my head against the wall for buying it now.
So Im waiting until summer, if theres no information by then, then Im buying this game and Mother 1+2 but overall this game is a sequel to Earthbound (snes), and has the Earthbound feel if you ask me. BUY THIS GAME NOW (and I know I should to)

Don't be afraid you don't know japanese!
I was afraid of this game, because I don't speak (and read) japanese at all, but I got through the story without problems! There is no need to know the japanese for playing it and having all the fun.

And if you want to know the whole story, there are FAQs available that cover almost every line of the ingame text IN ENGLISH.

Now go and get your copy of Mother 3 or you will miss one of the best RPG ever created.

    Great game
I just finished chapter 1, and I can tell you, this game is great. You can really empathize with the characters and what they're going through. It's not too hard to understand just by the animations, but you could play with a translation by your side (that's howI'm doing it).
    Highly recomended!

    i love this series
man this game is great!! a true sequal to the great Earth Bound on SNES.. too bad it's in Japanese.. i'll get my girlfriend to teach me Japanese to understand this game! Nintendo should really reconsider about reviving this series in the North America market! definitely worth picking up for the Earth Bound fans or even any RPG lovers! i think it's the best original GBA RPGs out there!

WOW this is a fun game and if you like Mother you have to get this game

    Claus(Bubbleman) on 21, Oct. 2006 09:15 (HKT)

    Lucas, you should play too.
Simply one of the best, or possibly the best MOTHER game in the series, it may not look like much, and who cares if is it Japanese or not, but this game, is a must buy. Why? Simple, the story, it's so deep at most times, in a way that you'll associate yourself with the characters. If you don't understan Japanese, you don't need to worry, since the character's animations just tell the story itself.
As a last note, if you really are a MOTHER fan, or someone who finished EarthBound and never got to see what happens after the ending, you NEED to buy this game and play it more than once.

    AMZING!!
For a moment, forget that this game is in japanese. Just forget it!
It's all the magic and fun from the previous mother games combined! If you've been waiting for this ever since those screens of Earthbound 64 like I have you'll understand how amazing this is. Now it's time to remember it is in japanese...but hey! It's cheaper than you'd expect an amazing japanese only game to cost!
In other words, buy it now if you have any love for Mother.

A Game not to be Overlooked
Ten years since the last segment in the 'Mother' ( Or Earthbound as it is called in English) trilogy, and has the best storyline of all of them. However, the range of exploration is limited, the game being set upon a direct path is the only flaw in comparison to Mother 2 (Earthbound). However the multiple timed hits in the battle system are brilliant, more than Mother 2, as you hit according to the beat of the music that is played.
The story itself is humorous as well as heart-wrenching, making it a bizarre dramatic comedy. Even if it is just a pixellated GBA game, it brought tears to my eyes. Itoi is a genius when it comes to storytelling, and will hopefully continue more with his career/s.

( To make things short and simple for the gamer on the go : AT LEAST PLAY THIS GAME ONCE THROUGH. IT IS MORE THAN A TYPICAL RPG GAME. )

    Superb Service, Surprising Arrival Time
I did not expect my order to arrive so quickly. I am very pleased with the entire transaction. The game itself is meeting all of my expectations, and setting my mind on fire with ideas and dreams. At first I had heard horror stories about importing, and Play-Asia has helped ease all those worries. Thank you all very much.

The one that ties the knot!
I got Mother 3 the day of it's release! This is definitly a game that anyone can import. It can save everyone money on gas prices here in the U.S.! People will stay home because they will enjoy it so much. You don't even have to understand it for it to be a great game. This one is defintly the best so far from the Mother series. I didn't know what to expect because Shigesato Itoi kept this game as a secret. It was BEYOND anything that i ever thought it would be. Play-Asia got the game to me so fast that no one on starmen.net had it. To anyone that is having doubts about buying this game, here is my message to you, "if you want to be entertained and content for weeks, then you B-E-T-T-E-R buy this game"!

    Play-Asia=Excellent,Service Mother3=Excellent Game
Play-Asia.com is a company that offers quality services and products. I was quite weary of ordering from them at first, but after recieving my new copy of Mother 3 in merely 24 hours after it shipped, I was extremely satisfied. As a true Earthbound/Mother fan, the game itself is a masterpiece. I am an American fluent in Japanese, so I have no problem playing the game. I will absolutely use Play-Asia for all my diehard import-gaming needs. I highly recommend the game Mother 3, as well as Play-Asia.com for their outstanding service.
