description
For young swordsman Cress Albane, it wasn't a typical day out hunting in the nearby woods. He had no hint of the tragedy unfolding back home.
When Cress returns to find his village in ruins and his parents killed, he sets out on a quest through time and space to uncover the villains responsible for the horror.
If you've been lucky enough to experience the up-tempo battles in Namco's Tales of Symphonia for the Nintendo GameCube, you already have a taste of the excitement waiting for you in Phantasia. Phantasia's innovative Linear Motion Battle System gives the game a much more energetic, up-tempo feel than traditional turn-based RPGs.
You and your two teammates stand in a line across the screen (hence "linear"), battling enemies coming at you from one or both sides. You control Cress and choose your band members' strategies (for example, you can set Chester to be more or less aggressive). You can pause at any time to access power-ups, issue new strategies and put your team in a new formation.

GBA version, not too good.
Tales of Phantasia was first released on the SNES, making it the first of all the Tales of games. Then it had ports to the PSone and the GBA.
The PSone port is usually considered the best version of Phantasia.
In the GBA version everything got watered down, and the voices went from being bad in a funny way, to bad like in really bad.
Just get it if you want it as a collectible, otherwise play the SNES or PSone versions.
(Based on my previous review of the american version)

Tales of Greatness!!!
This is the first Tales, originally released for the Super Nintendo and then re-released for the PS1 and the GBA. But the SNES version never saw the light out of Japan sadly enough.
I have mixed feeling about this game, sometimes I love it and can not put it down and then other days I just can not stand to even take a look at the box!
So, my reccomendation is that you buy it, play it and then if you are not a collector you should sell it. I do not think you will be playing it again soon.

Good But Not Great
I have never played the originals myself but compared to some other Tales out there this port of a great classic, I think, was a little bit...disappointing...a little.
Of course, I don't have much to compare to but my main complaint were the voices (though the battle screen irritated me sometimes...). Other than that, it's a classic that needs to be played!

A Bad Port of a Great Game
If you just want to play this game, track down the SNES or PS One versions. (There is a completed translation of the SNES version and there was a fan translation of the PS1 version in the wworks a few years ago,)
This is a good game, and it's nice to have an offical English Version, but it's not as good as the original.
