The GBA remake of Tales of Phantasia is a mix of the previous SNES as well as PSX version. There will be human voice acting for things like battle commands/skills/etc and victory, and you can revel in the SFC version of the openning theme.....
Tales of Phantasia If you’ve heard of Tales of Phantasia, then you’ve probably heard of how horrible and slow the battles are (in the GBA version at least) and how easy it is to get lost without knowing what to do next. If you heard that about this game, then you heard right. The battles really are slow and it really is easy to get lost if you don’t pay attention to what the NPCs say. Lets start with a detailed review of the battles.
Battles are fought on a 2D plane like most other 2D Tales games. You press A to attack and B + a direction to use your skills. Unlike modern Tales games, you cannot attack any way you want by pressing the A button and any direction. Your first A attack determines your second A attack, so it doesn’t really feel like you have much control over you A attacks. Like the other Tales games, you can combo your skills with your A attack by using them right after attacking. Another thing about battles is the spells. If you are fighting weak enemies, then you will want to turn your spells OFF. Why? Because they will stop all movement and you will not be able to do anything until the whole spell animation is over. This will usually cause short battles to be longer than they should be. This is one of the main reasons why people say ToP’s battles are slow. Another thing that feels slow about the battles is the menus. When you do something like use items, you will notice that the courser thing that points to the character’s name, who is using the item, moves in SLOW MOTION. This gets really annoying if you are using a lot of items.
In some modern RPGs, like ToS(its not really that modern but it does have one), there is a synopsis thing that tells you where you should go next in case you forget what you are supposed to be doing. ToP is not a modern RPG and therefore it does not have one. The NPCs in ToP don’t help you any better because they will usually give you VERY vague descriptions on what you should do next, so you will probably have to resort to a guide if you wish to have hopes of beating this game.
Final Rating: 7.5 out of 10… This game has great graphics( for a GBA game at least), decent sound/music, an okay story, and pretty bad gameplay. Also, the voice acting is so bad that you might end up laughing at it one point in the game.
Phantastic! Tales of Phantasia was the first portable Tales Of game I got. The first noticeable thing about it was the funny voice acting. When you turn on the game, a quote about evil appears. This is a key plot device. Most other GBA games don’t have voice acting, so this made the game unique compared to other GBA games. The voice acting during the battle between Morrison and Dhaos sounded over exaggerated. The acting of the main characters also wasn’t too good. Cress’ voice actor sounded either really bored or his voice was too deep. However, I think the sound quality also contributed to the terrible voices (Arche’s voice wasn’t too bad, though). Voice acting gets a 7.5. The music also suffered. The quality of the music was far worse than the quality of the music of the Super Famicom version of Tales of Phantasia. I rate the music a 7. The graphics were pretty good for a Gameboy Advance game. The backgrounds were very colorful. I give the graphics an 8.
Tales of Phantasia had a pretty clichéd story, but that is because it is the remake of a really old game. However, elements of the story were quite different than other RPGs of the time. For example, racism (between elves, humans, and half-elves) exists. The story starts off with Cress’ village getting destroyed by a power-hungry person who frees the “evil” Dhaos in hopes of obtaining his power. Cress, along with Mint, is sent to the past by Trinicus Morrison to find Arche and Claus to kill Dhaos. They go on a quest to gain the resources to defeat Dhaos, but in the end who is evil?
