After 2002's masterpiece ICO ~Melody in the Mist~, the original soundtrack album based on Sony's latest PlayStation2 RPG Shadow of the Colossus (also known as Wanda to Kyozou in Japan) has arrived.
With a total of 42 tracks, the album contains every song that can be found in the game as well as a number of unreleased tracks. To those who have not played the game, the sound can be described as a "massive open space filled completely with the sound of a magestic orchestra".
Incredible soundtrack The music is great. I'm listening to it as I write this, and it's a great feeling. The music fits the game really well, so listening to it outside of the game is interesting.

Colossal OST for a Colossal game! Every single song is great!
The only downside is that they didn't include the "song" (if you can call it that) from that part where you're trying to escape from the sucking well. It was a very soothing tune...

A beautiful soundtrack to a beautiful game! This is practically the only CD I listen to anymore! Possibly the best video game soundtrack that has ever been created. Even if you aren't a fan of the game, this soundtrack is definitely worth listening to! The songs are so dramatic and powerful - almost makes me want to jump up and dance! (or, maybe not, lol)

Plain Awesome! One of the most intense and most beautiful soundtracks ever. No wonder it got OST of the year on IGN. Tracks suit all types of colossi and show how music can affect a game. If your looking for something new then i advice you to get this now.
little_linda(7) on 23, Mar. 2007 19:32 (HKT)
Not just for fans! Even if you've never played SotC, you'll probably love this CD. The music is simply amazing! If I had to describe it in just one word, I'd say: EPIC!
Every single track has it's own charm and appeal to it. Whenever I listen to this CD, I simply lose myself in the music. It creates a beautiful fantasy world right in front of your eyes. The slow, melodic pieces are really touching and the dynamic battle themes will make you tremble with excitement.
If you love instrumental music, buy this! You won't regret it.
@ martin: Why shouldn't you be able to use this CD in American technology? It is an Audio CD and therefore not region encoded. Should work on CD- and DVD-Player as well as PC.
Triforce128 on 21, Nov. 2006 13:31 (HKT)
Incredibly epic and inspiring This soundtrack is by far and away the one I am most proud to own. Kow Otani did a magnificent job of creating the vision of a fantasy world through his music. As strange as it may seem, when I listen to this CD, I can't help but think about Ocarina of Time and how it could have been if only these composers had a hand in it. But anyhow, the music is both moving and rousing and you won't regret the purchase!
Wanda on 16, Nov. 2006 01:11 (HKT)
Excellent with or without a playthrough Even if you haven't played this game, you can safely get this soundtrack anyway. It's brilliantly orchestrated and some of the battle themes are ridiculously addictive.
Martin on 17, Sep. 2006 04:22 (HKT)
USA First of all, this game is BY FAR the most EPIC i have ever played! The music gave the game such a powerfly emotional feel.
I am wondering if I would be able to use the CD in the American technology. I would really appreciate it if someone could answer. Thanks very much! :)

Shadow of the Colossus Soundtrack Perhaps the best videogame soundtrack of all time. Whilst playing the game you very quickly become aware that the grand and epic scale is expertly conveyed in the excellently composed music. Each encounter, each moment of importance, and many of those in between, are further brought to life by the music.
The only down side is that the music has been made specifically for a game (is that a down side in a video game soundtrack?) and many of the pieces are inspired by the action. The musical pieces accompanying the battles with the colossi are rousing to the point of being almost overbearing, but this is a reflection of the creatures you must defeat in the game. It has it's quiet and meolodic moments too, and these also shine.
This soundtrack truly is a work of genius... just like the game itself. If you're playing the game then you're no doubt already whisting the themes. Put yourself out of your misery and buy this CD.

Just like old historical movies, but better than them! I've played the game and It's the years best for me with Kingdom Hearts 2,but unlike KH2 this game has really astonishing and breathtaking score,it's kinda old grand Hollywood historical epics but feels fresh also.It perfectly fits game's athmosphere and can be listen without playing it,not a single note is boring and it flows within your ears smoothly, one of the best game soundtracks ever, along with God of War,cheers:)

Speechless!!! From the first time I played the game and experienced the wonderful action that was beautifully and perfectly commented by the amazing background score I knew I had to have the soundtrack. So I searched and finally came upon this website and ordered it. Listening to the thing as a whole reminds me of the awe-inspiring moments of the game as it ranges from gorgeously moving orchestrated melodies, to creeping and sometimes thunderous exclamations of a powerful score. I am left speechless. The website also did a fantastic!!! job of taking the order and shipping it with impecable speed; I will be using them again!! Excellent!!!!
Dormin on 07, Apr. 2006 08:35 (HKT)
Masterful Words can be used to describe this soundtrack, but there is a better way. This kind of passion and soul can only be experienced by hearing it. The balance of brass, strings, woodwinds, drums and of course synths, make this track a masterful artwork. Sure other songs can move you. John Williams (A favorite of mine) can make you feel a battle or climax. However, Kow Otani can embrance other senses so that when you close your eyes, you see the colossus, you feel that agony of each victory, you cry at the heartbreak the hero endures. THAT, is why this soundtrack is a must have.

Simply the best... This is the soundtrack to the bittersweet, yet epic PS2 game - Shadow of the Colossus by Kow Otani, and it is a beautiful soundtrack. The music is extremely rich in texture, and is filled with a powerful emotions, heart breaking pathos, and an epic sense of purpose.
My favorite tracks are:
01 Prologue - To the Ancient Land
(the strings are very mournful, yet the flute and choral singing leaves you with a sense of wonder)
02 Prohibited Art
(wonderful string performances, accompanied by other instruments I can't really name, but it is a beautiful, heartbreaking track)
12 A Violent Encounter (Colossus)
(a very epic piece; the chanting chorus is my favorite part - it is very dramatic, and quite exhiliarating. It reminds me of Howard Shore's 'Minas Tirith' musical track in 'Lord of the Rings/Return of the King', but moreso)
13 Revived Power (Colossus)
(the climax to track 12; a very stirring, adventurous piece)
15 Silence
(possibly the most exquisitely haunting piece on the soundtrack; the violins really create a truly ethereal atmosphere)
21 Counterattack
(an action packed track; gives the impression of constant running; a frantic battle)
19 Creeping Shadow (Colossus)
(another beautiful use of strings - this piece gives the impression of a approaching threat that is terrible and beautiful all at once)
08 The Opened Way (Colossus)
(a very dramatic score; seemlingly indicating the turn of the tide in a david/goliath-like battle)
25 A Despair-filled Farewell
(excellent title; once again feels like there is a lot of frantic running, and even great winds blowing; it is a very epic track that fills the environment with a sweeping sense of urgency)
22 Sky Burial
(this track reminds me of Jo Hisaishi's 'Nausicaa Valley of the Wind' soundtrack; it is threatening one moment, then almost fairty tale like and romantic the next; and yet never loses the sense that pathos that is constant throughout the soundtrack)
27 Swift Horse
(I did not hear this music when playing the game itself, and it is a real gem; epic as always, and very stirring)
30 Demise of the Ritual
(the most tragic score on the soundtrack; beautiful and ominous, leaving feelings of great loss and pain, and yet also a feeling of needing to fight to the very end, regardless of the terror that is surely in store)
33 Epilogue - Those Who Remain
(the last chapter of the bittersweet tale, and the emotional sequel to track 01 {obviously}; it is the soundtrack's most emotional score - listening to it makes you realize the journey you have just taken, and the even greater tragedy has that come from taking it)
35 The Sunlit Earth
(this reminds me of Michael Nyman's 'The Piano' soundtrack, or Jo Hisaishi's 'Princess Mononoke' soundtrack; it leaves you with a sense of hope and moving onward, past the pain)
09 The End of the Battle
(in the game, whenever one of the terrifying colossi was slain {and you managed to survive}, all you felt was sadness at what you had just destroyed - this track captures that perfectly; it also reminds you that for your actions, there is a price you will soon pay)
42 The Farthest Land (Reprise)
(life after the epilogue - very bittersweet, with a touch more of happiness)
ALSO: 06 Sign of the Colossus
(another gorgeous track, very exquisite and adventurous)
Well, those are my favorites (actually listed as they would be on my media playlist). I mentioned in my commentary of the tracks some other albums that I have in my collection - those albums are among some of my all time favorites (escpecially Shore's Lord of the Rings). I hope the fact that I compared some of this soundtrack's music with those other albums leaves a clear impression of just how wonderful the music really is. If you know and enjoyed any of the soundtracks, or are fond of richly textured, dynamic, fantastical scores , then this album is especially for you. With or without playing the game, Kow Otani's soundtrack to Shadow of the Colossus has my vote of confidence as being very much worth adding to your eclectic collection.
Thanks,
Bola

A musical masterpiece Bar none, the best soundtrack of 2005. This rivals even some of the music from the greates RPGs of all time. This soundtrack is my number two favorite now of all time right behind Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. If you like music, you owe it to yourself to pick this one up.

It's all about the battles...epic battles No video game music in 2005 had made me more teary-eyed and chilled to the bones that "Shadow of the Colossus."
As beautiful and visceral this soundtrack is, the CD's all about the boss battles. 1/3 of this soundtrack is all about the colossi battles...and they're great. Each colossal track fits the purpose given by the game, and each are different and emotionally-spoken in their own way. Track 8 did the theme of the game perfectly, cause even thought some haven't played the game, listening to this track might give the idea of how big the game is.
Simply put, "SotC" soundtrack is the epitome of boss themes, and if you're a big boss-theme fan, you'll love it. It doesn't hurt that the soundtrack can leave you in tears as well, especially in track 9. Like everyone else, this soundtrack is so subtle yet grand, you might think it's from a Miyazaki film.

Breathtaking... Absolutely beautiful and so well orchestrated.
The music in this game fits so well with its imagary. So intelligent and unique that certain Colossi theme tunes have subtle quiet music and some fast and loud.
An absolute masterpiece of orchestrated music which adds even more to the mystery of the game.
The music IS the game!!!
