See the Past a dab of New
I became a Tales fan after playing Symphonia on the Gamecube. Yes, I was a little late in getting introduced to the series but once I had finished that game, I immediately wanted to play other games in the series. Tales of Phantasia may be one of the older games in the series, but I still found it to be quite enjoyable.
While the gameplay is not as fast paced as the more recent Tales games, I find it to be just as enjoyable. Leveling and building up grade (an addition to the PSP version) is as addicting as ever. It can be a little hard to get into the battle system if you are used to the modern Tales battle systems, but after growing accustomed to it, I was able to mostly look past its simplicity.
The music is of course very enjoyable. Sakuraba Motoi does some of the tracks, so fans of the Tales series will enjoy the music in this game just as any other. As for the voice acting, it was good, but I never played any of the other versions of Phantasia, but whether fans of the original like this is not something I can answer.
Overall, Phantasia is very worthwhile. Maybe it might be difficult to get into if you began on the newer Tales games, but give it a chance. There is definitely a lot of entertainment value here.

Disappointing
This is essentially a port of the PSX version of Tales of Phantasia with fully voiced events and new sprites. The battle system hasn't changed which is really disappointing, considering how the newer "Tales of" games play compared to this.

Tales of phantasia full voice edition the best
This is one of the best tales games. The game is very playable Even if you don't know Japanese because the items have pictures next to them so you can know what you are buying and the game let's you know wheather you can item and if your stats go up or down. The game has a great storyline.

An enhanced PSP edition of the Tales game that started it all. Much like Vesperia PS3, the game can be enjoyed with an entirely voiced script. Fans of old will enjoy this port and being on the PSP, offers an opportunity for others to experience the birth of the Tales franchise. The game runs smoothly, visuals are amazing on the PSP's screen, and the game play is what you would expect from Tales, action RPG goodness. This should be a definite buy for RPG and Tales fans alike.
