Sekaiju no Meikyuu II
If you like channelding old-school dungeon crawlers, give this game a shot! It is regarded by many as the hardest entry in the series. Alternatively, you could play the remake for 3DS, which is actually better in every way but easier.

This game is very challenging.
Unlike the recent RPG, you'll find out yourself gameover many times.
You need strategies more than level or power.

Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard
Etrian Odyssey II is a throwback to the archaic role-playing genre. Unabashedly difficult, the game requires you to slog through a massive dungeon in search of better loot and glory. If you come looking for a story, there isn't much of one. The mammoth tree Yggdrasil has opened up and within its turn-based depths are treasures and plenty of evil. As a new band of adventures looking to make your mark, you'll form a group, consisting of up to five characters, to venture in and try to survive. Much like the role-playing titles of old - such as the first Wizardry, created in 1981 - Etrian Odyssey has players penning their own maps on the touchscreen of the DS or risk getting lost. All the while, the game is throwing dangerous monsters, infrequent dungeon escape points and even invisible bosses at them. Death is frequent and usually swift to the unwary. This new version comes with three new classes (with a total of 12) and revises the skills required in the old favorites to make it harder for seasoned players to exploit the system. Alchemists, for instance, no longer have access to poisons off the bat. Another tough change is harvesting. The primary way to make money, it now summons powerful monsters if players over-harvest. Etrian Odyssey II makes no bones, it caters to a niche audience of hardcore players. If the idea of more loot, more glory and tough gameplay sounds like heaven, this one is for you.
