Shinobi: Heart Under Blade is a Japanese, ninjitsu, romance movie. The story is an adaptation of the novel, Kouga Ninpou Cho by Yamada Futaro, which depicts the clash between two ninja clans, Iga and Kouga in the early part of the Tokugawa era, and the fated love between Kouga Gennosuke (played by Joe Odagiri) from the Kouga clan and Oboro (played by Yukie Nakama) from the Iga clan.
Kouga Gennosuke is the son of Danjo Koga, the powerful leader of the Koga clan, while Oboro is the granddaughter of Ogen, the respected Iga clan matriarch. Born only two fight, the two leads were raised in opposing ninja training villages. After years living under truce, they are commanded by supreme shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa to settle their dispute for good. Unknown to themselves, the two successors of the Koga and Iga ninja villages fall in love ... Moving them closer to bitter fate.
The movie has been directed by Ten Shimoyama, the theme song of this movie was the #1 hit, HEAVEN, performed by superstar Ayumi Hamasaki.
天下分け目の関ヶ原の決戦で勝利を収め、１６０３年、江戸に幕府を開いた将軍・徳川家康（北村和夫）。長い戦乱を治め、泰平の世作りを始めた家康は、将軍職を嫡子・秀忠へ譲り駿府へ退いた後も政権を握り、天下統一を目指して争いの芽を摘み続けていた。そして誰もが平和を感じはじめた１６１４年、人里離れた二つの里に、家康の影が迫り寄る―。伊賀・鍔隠（つばがく）れと甲賀・卍谷（まんじだに）―４００年の昔より、人智を超えた不思議な術を持つ忍者〈忍（しのび）〉を作り出してきた二つの里。もともと犬猿の仲であった伊賀と甲賀は、初代・服部半蔵との約定により、術を交わすことを禁じられていた。両里は接触を避け、長きに渡り平穏が続いていたが、家康のフィクサー、南光坊天海（なんこうぼうてんかい）（石橋蓮司）の策略が余りにも皮肉な形で二つの忍を引き合わせる。伊賀・鍔隠れの党首・お幻の孫である朧（おぼろ）（仲間由紀恵）と甲賀・卍谷の党首・弾正（だんじょう）の跡継ぎ・弦之介（げんのすけ）（オダギリジョー）は、互いの身分を知ることなく出会い、運命的な恋に落ちる。だが、宿命とも言うべき悲劇が二人を引き裂こうとしていた。それは、天下人・家康からの指令。伊賀と甲賀、５対５の戦いに勝ち残った一人の忍が駿府に上り、次期将軍を決するというもの。果たして、伊賀甲賀争忍の禁は解かれ、計１０人の精鋭たちの名が挙げられた。伊賀から選ばれたのは朧のほか、鍵爪を武器とする野生児・蓑念鬼（みのねんき）、糸で敵を切り裂く夜叉丸（やしゃまる）（坂口拓）、毒蛾を操る少女・蛍火（ほたるび）（沢尻エリカ）、そして戦いの鍵を握る冷徹な策士・薬師寺天膳（やくしじてんぜん）（椎名桔平）の５人。甲賀からは、先読みに長けた盲目の室賀豹馬（むろがひょうま）、棒手裏剣を自在に操る筑摩小四郎（ちくまこしろう）（虎牙光揮）、何人にも姿を変える如月左衛門（きさらぎさえもん）、体内で猛毒を発生させる妖艶な美女・陽炎（かげろう）（黒谷友香）、そして弦之介の５人。その弦之介ただ一人だけが家康の真意を疑う中、両里の綱は今、解き放たれた！ 超人的な秘術を駆使した戦いが繰り広げられる中、敵同士となって再会する朧と弦之介。二人の愛の行方は？そして忍たちの未来は―！？
