The best media player for GBA and DS!
I got mine couple of years ago, and I still use it daily! On the bus, coffee break, long trips... You name it!
I had a hard time trying to work things out at first, since all documentation was in japanese. On top of that, I use Linux as operating system on my desktop computer.

There are definitely better and less expensive devices that are available on the internet. I regret buying this without doing more research about home-brew on the web. I would not recommend this product.

My North American GameCube is now a Panasonic GC Q.
I placed an order for the Nintendo Play-yan Micro from this site on January 16, 2007 and received it on February 1, 2007. It only took two weeks (with the fastest priority mail shipping option) to receive a confirmation e-mail and two days later the package slip was inside of my mailbox.

As for the Play-yan Micro, itself, all I can say is... wow! Through the use of an SD card, it allows you to store MP3 music and MP4 movies onto any Nintendo handheld capable of playing a GBA game. Before ordering this, I owned the GBA Movie Player, and although this lacks the ability to store pictures, text files, and freeware games, it is still the better of the two in terms of rewinding/fast-forwarding capabilities and it also gives you the ability to actually repeat a particularly desirable song, without having you manually do it yourself through the use of A-B repeat.
The sound is quite loud and clear when listening to music through its built-in head/earphone jack, although, when it comes to motion picture audio, the sound can be somewhat low and warbly.

The only things that really prevent me from giving it a full five-star rating is the fact that part of the picture on the top and bottom of the screen is cut off after the film is played back and every so often, one will encounter somewhat of a "ghosting" effect a la the Datel Max Media Player. Furthermore, there does not seem to be a way to switch back and forth between the Mario and Mr. Game & Watch themes. That is, once you switch to the Mario theme, there is no way to switch back.

In spite of its mild imperfections, if I had to choose between this and then NOT having portable handheld access at all to the movies that I like, then I would definitely choose this over that any day. As I stated earlier, my American GameCube is now a Panasonic Q, that is, a GameCube capable of playing actual audio CDs and DVDs, which, sadly, was never released outside of Japan. Beyond that, I can use either my GBA SP or Nintendo DS as a pseudo-portable CD player and as long as the storage space on the SD card is large enough, those days of switching DVD (or CD) discs and having to skip chapters to get to a menu are finally over.

Great quality product - Super customer service!
Just rcvd this afternoon and am like a kid in a candy store. Video and sound playback is unbelievably impressive.

I am using Play Yan Video Maker. It's a very easy to use rudementary MP4 converter that produces high quality videos and best of all, it's freeware.

Play-Asia has excellent customer service and superb response times. Will definately purchase from your site again. Thank you for a pleasant transaction and a great product!

Perfect, once you figure it out
the video and sound quality of this device is the most important thing... and in that respect, it is a high-quality product. Everthing you would expect from a Nintendo-licensed accessory.

I use Nero Digital Pro to encode movies, and the video quality is astonishing. Far surpasses playing wmv video on my pocket pc.

The MP3 music is great as well... and I love the Mario theme! Expensive, but worth the money.

    You want one
It has its quirks as an mp3 player, but as a Gameboy or DS accessory, I can think of none better. Easy to use and no where near as complex as similar devices in it's class.

Pros: Excellent sound quality from standard headphones. Mp3’s are easy to encode and use. The device even plays music with variable bitrate! The videos are surprisingly watchable despite the small screen. ...And no, you really don't need Media Stage.

Cons: While high-caliber, the Play-Yan is not the least bit flexible. While the device plays most mp3’s, no other formats are available for audio. Video encoding, while fast and simple with most applications, takes some time to learn and find programs. (I recommend PSPVideo 9) There’s also the lack of playlist support, but that’s easily overcome with a few shuffled folders.

    Amazing
I have to thank teflon a few posts below for mentioning Nero Digital, that's by far the best way to convert videos for the Play-Yan Micro.

Videos are really nice, much better than the Movie Player I use to have (both version 1 and 2). The best part is that it plays mp3's, without converting, which is a blessing. I just drag and drop a few songs and play it on the go on my micro, the sound quality is very satisfying.

A nice note, I'm using the same 512mb MMC card I use in my phone, an RS-MMC (with an adapter off course). It works flawlessly with Play-Yan Micro.

    Seabutcher (3) on 19, Mar. 2006 00:35 (HKT)

It Rocks. Or Pops. Or Classicals. It really depends on your taste.
Ok, when I got this thing, I was (obviouisly) very excited. When I opened the manual, It was in Japanese. Obviously. And I got a japanese error message when I laoded it up.
As it was japanese, I couldn't be certain, but I assumed the error was due to my lack of an SD card, so I went out and bought a 64MB for £10. I then loaded music onto it (as much as would fit), slotted it into the Play-yan, and everything went fine. Simplicity itself.
I don't have a GB Micro, so I bought my SP out of retirement
and it's basically an MP3 player now.(It also works with the DS, but that's a bit heavy to carry around. The DS Lite should fix that though.)
There's a few extra tricks there, too (That are PROBABLY described in the manual) but it's all simle enough to figure out. (Just press up and down to ajust the volume, hold R while you do to ajust the Bass instead) Just press buttons and see what happens. I'll leave you to discover what happens when you keep tapping "A" during a song ;)
Did I mention it also plays Video files?

    I'm impressed
This is hands down the best accessoire I've ever bought for a video game system. I'm using it with my Micro, and I love it. The ease of use in MP3 mode is better than with most standard MP3 players, and the video quality is awesome, especially as my TV set support compatible direct-to-SD-card recording (Panasonic Viera). I usually record some tv shows in the evening and watch them on the train the next day.

    Play Yan Micro
Awesome! All you need is Nero Digital to make .mp4 files and you are all set. My music videos are about 10mb per file. Use the Nero Digital setting on Portable with 112 for the audio, 2 pass for the video quality and in less than 5 minutes you get a file ready for your SD card/PYM.
    Perfect.
And yes, the sound through the headphone jack of the GBM sucks, but the audio quality through the headphone jack of the PYM is excellent. A MUST HAVE

    iandavid (9) on 13, Feb. 2006 04:54 (HKT)

    Very simple to use.
The Play-Yan is actually easier to use than the PSP's movie player. Drag and drop your files into an SD card, pop it into your Nintendo handheld of choice and you're set to go.
Just remember! Your movie files must be .asf/MPEG4 format at 30fps or it won't detect it.

On a negative note, I should note that it took Play-Asia a full three weeks to deliver my shipment past the promised date, which was a two week waiting period to begin with, even with the highest priority shipping.

    Great Buy
The Play yan micro is amazing.
Mp3's and Video are great, with a little bit of Video Editing Knowhow.
The only downside is mentioned lower under "bad sound"
But that's only with the GB or DS speakers,
The sound through the PYM headphone jack is superb.

    Great Product
I just received this last week. My wife bought a GB Micro for me my Christmas gift and this as birthday gift. It is a great complement to the GB micro in every way, functionality, size, looks. This sound quality is excellent with the headphone attached to the Play-Yan. For video the picture is very good considering its size but sound quality for the video I would rate just average. All in all this is a must have.

Also this product is compatible with the Nintendo GBA, GBA SP, GBA micro, DS, and even the Gamboy Player which as attachment to the Gamecube. I’ve tried in all them.

    Fantastic pricing.
I am highly satisfied with this product. I found that the sound quality of the DS is incredible and the videos on the screens are shown in very good resolution.

What impresses me the most is the pricing of the Play-Yan and the SD memory cards (it uses Memory cards to play music and video). A 1 Gig SD is 47$ to an identicle 1 Gig Dual Pro for 100$. SD is Nintendo, and the Dual Pro is Sony.

Cheaper memory, better sound, comparable video. I'm so happy I bought this.

Johannesmutlu said that it was a bad thing that it didn't switch into DS mode. That's because it's a GBA/GBASP/GBM accessory. Would you expect Metroid Fusion to use the touch screen when you play it on the DS???

the quality video and audio passtrue seems to be great as if i dit toud that when usng it on the nds that it will switchinh to ds mode, no way it,s steel gba mode.
the sound trough gba/nds speaker will be horreble .no stereo no 16 bit sound or even mixed mono sound WHY?
couse the am3 player and the special movie series from nintendo they dit show that the gba/nds can provide absolutely cd quality stereo sound.
note that for me the passtrue headphone is not inportant it,s all abaut for what the gba/nds can do thus!

Nice and interesting interface. Bad resolution (because its GBA mode) and it really shows you how bad the DS speakers are, and that you should have bought a PSP. (but DS games are better).
