Fun and Innovative robo pixel strategy thing!
Robocalypse is a totally fun, nifty little RTS that I would easily recommend to anyone with a DS,
The game mechanics are pretty unique, there is a simplified version of classic RTS base building, upgrade reseach and unit prodouction, you only have four kinds of base unit: the builders who work autonomously unless you give the specific tasks, the cheap and mostly reliable soldiers robots, twitchy and fragile medics that can heal any other unit and the heavies, which are ponderously slow but deal out a ton of damage and are more sturdy.
To mix things up a bit you don't directly control these units, you set down 'action flags' and the units who aren't preoccupied head in that direction and defend/attack etc...it sounds a bit weird but it works surpisinly well. You have direct control the hero characters, you can have three at a time deployed during mission and there is a total of six of them to unlock that are all different in terms of fighting style, toughness and special abilities, these characters can be upgraded in-between levels ( and more so if you collect the 'secret' barrels that are littered throughout the missions ) and depending on what heroes you use changes the style of play per mission giving it a lite rpg element.
The story is fairly simple but has some genuinely funny moments despite a odd mix of cartoony style writing with the more 'mature' themes. The game has a very 'indie' feel and the cut scenes which are vertically static, feel a little cheap ( although there are some cute fourth wall busting jokes about those in the game,) however the core game is totally buzzing with style and awesome pixel action and animation and general robotic destruction.
So if you are a fan of old school rts'...'Z' in particular, give this one a shot. Just a note, I found it a little on the easy side, so if you are a more experienced player try cranking up the difficulty to hard for more of a challenge : D
