not the best DQ but great one :3
this DQ is great but its not the best i played on the series,i could say i liked more the previews ones but still have a lot of positives features that makes this DQ 9 so enjoyable, has always and expected this DQ doesnt change much about the gameplay so if played the previews DQ woudnt b a problem.
i love the customization feature of this game, also when u change your gears u can see how they actually looks so chara appearence changes too and i think thats a goodi addition to the series, they should add it on coming DQ.
anyways this DQ is so fun to play,i really dont care about the graphics just enjoying this one so much :3

Finally some co-op RPG greatness
The main thing that attracted me to this game was the possibilty to play the main game (this means, the story, the adventure, and not a submode made as a nerfed version of the game) in a co-op multiplayer mode... And for that, it does a pretty good job.
I player this only with 1 friend, but i'm sure it would have been even better with 2 more.
The game itself is a classic RPG, just like any other Dragon Quest game, but the multiplayer makes it stand out from all the older versions.
So, playing it alone its fine too, but too get all the juice this game has to offer its better to go out and encourage a friend to buy it to play with you!
I hope to see more multiplayer RPGs, this one just showed how they should look like.

Not my favorite DQ game but still good
The main objective of this game is the Wifi function. If you don't plan on hooking up to the internet, then it's probably not worth it.
The good news is, you can keep playing this game and keep getting stronger hidden dungeon maps, etc, after you've cleared the main storyline. In short, this game is what you make of it.
Still, I would argue they tried to put too much into this game and I felt it was a little scattered and lacked focus. They brought in the alchemy from DQ8, customized characters like DQ3 (ie no character development), and did away with the casino. I actually didn't mind that they did away with the casino this time around because to me that was also just a necessary evil in this series.
If you're looking for a straight forward RPG, then you will probably be disappointed with this game. But I still think it was enjoyable worth the buy.

Wow, this game is amazing, it is my first Dragon Quest and I am glad to have it. I have put 70 hours into it and haven't even finished the main storyline, there are so many things to do.
I give huge props to the decision to put this game on the DS, it outshines the other RPGs for the system.
If you like turn based rpgs then get it! Really do, you won't be sorry.

Solid and addictive
Akira Toriyama’s art translates well to the DS, and the world is pleasantly vibrant and varied enough to remain interesting over time.
Once this game gets its claws into you, it won’t let go for at least thirty hours. At LEAST. Hardcore devotees could feasibly run a hundred hours or more out of it.
For me a MUST GET!!

A great turn based RPG
I enjoyed this game. It was my introduction to the DQ series, but I have been a fan of turn based RPGs since the late 1980s. I am happy to see that there are still some good turn based RPGs in production. Final Fantasy series turned bad after FF7 (the best was FF6) and there hasn't been much on offer since the PS1 and Saturn. My only gripe was that the storyline only includes the protagonist and not really any of the other playable characters. I understand why Level 5 went with this approach but I definately prefer to be immersed in a story where there is plenty of character interaction, and the playable heroes of the game develop as the story unfolds.

Another Hit to Level 5
Play-Asia offer price, service unique and best oportunity to purchase a game that highly probably will become of the best RPG of 2010. This game have beauty graphics, great story, magnific mechanics (control all actions with your stylus), dinamic battles, gorgerous cinemas, cute costumes characters, good multiplayer modes and addictive in all aspects. the bad thing is the repetitive battle animations but isn't problem if you like become more stronger your team

Dragon Quest rules the skies!
Ok if you still enjoy jrpgs...this is the best of this year! Final Fantasy 13 lost its way even though it was linear, but DQ9 does almost everything right and is injected with new life via online play. Whether you play online or single player, this game rules. Charming music, huge quest, and amazingly interesting enemies makes this an instant classic. I hope it sells well. See...some JRPGs can do well (The awesome Demon's Souls doesn't count since I don't consider it a traditional jrpg)

A good move for the series.
I won't say this is better than DQ VIII, because that was a perfect old school RPG. But this has enough there to keep you going, the humour is very UK English so the regional translations are certainly earning their money.

A great game for RPG fans
My first impressions of this game were very high. I really enjoy the gameplay, and it has not felt like a tedious rpg for even a second. I think the story is creative, and I actually enjoy reading the text on the screen, whereas i usually just skip right on through it to keep on playing. This game fully suits what i had wanted out of an RPG experience on the ds.

Best original portable game of 2010
One you get past the fact that the latest iteration on this seminal RPG series is on a handheld and not on a home console, DQIX will constantly amaze you. The game is packed to the brim with features, quests, things to do and monsters to slay. While most JRPGs have fairy mediocre stories, DQIX cleverly avoids this trap by breaking the story into manageable and easily digestable chunks -- each tied together by adventures in one or more town. The game's combat is fast, fun and varied. The graphics are great, the personal customizations -- be it the ability to create your own party, or to mix and match weapons/armour -- add a layer of depth and fun to the game. And then you have the online capabilities -- either via the in-game, online shop, or via the various treasure maps you can get in the tag mode...
All in all, DQIX is the finest JRPG this gen and one you must own if you love: RPGs / JRPGs / DQ / good games.

Perfect Social Game
Produced by Level 5, they made White Knight Chronicles, Prof Layton, Dark Cloud etc, essentially a quality studio.
Game is over a 100 hours long, with money secrets and things worth doing. Basically there is a lot to keep you busy, and things like Alchemy can only really be done post game as you need lots of materials.
Basically this is a rich and vibrant world.
Also being able to fight with your friends as in help them battle? Who wouldnt want to try.
Best game on DS 2010.

Same ol' DQ? Mostly.
Dragon Quest is an interesting beast. The series has been lumbering steadily on it's own path for over 20 years at this point, and only occasionally will it bat an eye at the barest notion of change. Surprisingly enough this WORKS for the series, and DQ9 almost seems content to stay the course.
However, as with Level 5's efforts in the previous title, there's still quite a lot different. Taking the class system of DQ3 and combining it with a DQ8-lite world is surprisingly effective, and though your party is utterly silent and the NPCs all engage in the most egregious use of puns and alliteration that the English language has ever seen, the whole thing stil manages to be quite entertaining, well paced, and sometimes even memorable. (And given that this is the series known for 'but thou must!' storytelling, that's gotta mean something.)
Rambling aside, the game looks great. Character customization allows to create almost every character Akira Toriyama has ever made (ie, all three of them) but the limitless selection of equipment (all of which is visible) really lets player creativity fly.
Musically this game is on par with the rest of the series, which can be attributed to the series composer most probably being a robot of some kind masquerading as an Enix employee. Memorable tunes are few and far between, and there's an awful lot of repetition, but it's no worse than the 16-bit days. Series fans will undoubtedly appreciate the game's dogged efforts to remain aurally familiar, right down to the use of trademarked sound effects from the NES/Famicom days.
The gameplay, and most important part of this whole thing, is absolutely a blast. Running on a traditional turn-based system, Level-5 has nevertheless managed add a lot of life to the combat. Tons of class skills (all painfully pockmarked with puns) keep things fresh as is, and even the traditionally stodgy character stats have been given a boot in the pants; for example, characters have stats for stylishness and charisma which, when high enough, will actually cause enemies to be paralyzed with awe or even romance.
Best not to think too much on that last part.
Long story short, if you're a fan of the Dragon Quest series you already probably have the game. If not, DQ9 is a fun adventure through all the staples of ancient jRPGs that refines the systems of previous DQ games to near perfection. You'll run around a huge, colorful world, beat up a ton of goofy monsters, and have a great time doing it. And there is a TON of game to play with this one, hoo boy. Beating the main plotline is only half the fun.

Dragon Quest 9: Creativity in a Cartridge
You will be amazed how the developers of the game have managed to place such creativity and features into a Nintendo DS Game. This game sets a high standard of quality at least in RPG Games released into the Nintendo DS. The graphics are cutting edge and the music score is topnotch. The virtual world of Dragon Quest 9 is quite vast, you actually will spend time traveling from one place to another if by foot. Despite this, there is no loss in detail. You can design your own characters and choose their vocations (better known as Jobs in RPG's). There are also unlockable vocations for you to pursue! As for the battle system, there are no random enemy encounters because enemies wander the field and you only enter a battle upon making contact with them. If you are wise enough not to wander carelessly, you can avoid enemy encounters! If you are into multiplayer, you will enjoy the multitude of multiplayer features in the game.
The purchase price is worth the quality and gaming experience you will have with Dragon Quest 9.

Brilliant game to play with friends
DQ9 brings the classic JRPG formula back in a form that's pure and accessible, that just anyone can pick up the game and instantly enjoy it. It's especially fun playing the game in co-op with friends.

Greatest in DS' Dragon Quest series
The great leap brought by Dragon Quest IX are:
- Better battle sequence which showing all heroes and enemies
- Coop quest with several friends
- Additional side quest that soon coming as downloadable content.
Hopefully they'll do the same for Dragon Quest VI

Shocked!
It's a really big JRPG on my little Nintendo DS! Now I see why Dragon Quest is the most popular RPG in Japan - it's modern, adorable, interesting, AMAZNG. Horii, Toriyama and Sugiyama are geniuses. My favourite game!

Awesome RPG, great price!
This game is great, a totally awesome RPG that you can take anywhere. The multiple control methods (buttons or stylus) allows you to play the game easily with just one hand so you can eat food or read a book with the other free hand. Thank god for the DS having region free games! I would have had to pay $70 Australian if I'd bought it here.
Thanks Play-Asia!

Worthy of your time
A stellar game, superbly translated. Multiplayer mode is strong too. Perhaps slightly easier than some other Dragonquest games, which should appeal to newcomers to the series.

Brilliant.
There's a reason why DQ games are only released on weekends. One of the best games on the DS!

Can't go wrong
I agree with the comments above.
Though, the story in this episode is not as "dark" as some of the older episodes but it's still very good.
The graphic is the best on the DS (for now).
I've been playing DQ since the first episode (since the Japanese version) and find DQ very entertaining.

Brand new JRPG on DS
There's been quite a rush of Dragon Quest games coming to NDS localised which provided gamers with treat on one of the classic JRPG franchise.
Now the official continuation of the franchise is here in the form of Dragon Quest 9. For a game that kept it to old tradition for so long, this game breaths in some fresh air with character customization and an online component that gives it a new spin.
Cell shaded look seen on DQ8 (PS2) returns with great touch and game presents itself very well.
DS has never really been short of JRPGs, but this is one of a must get.

Good game......
I think this would be my 4th Dragon Quest games...(having played DQ8 on PS2 and DQIV and DQV on NDS).
I enjoy playing this game tremendously and the lines are quite funny.....I mean we are talking about Dragon Quest...one of the best running series from SE...

Hi,
this game is well done in what it aims to do. The downside is: did we need a fashion-RPG and this tedious item-making? The goal of this game is kind of questionable. But most of the time, you can ignore it.
The storyline is enjoyable but not deep. In fact some NPCs sometimes have more personality than the main characters, but I found the background really interesting.
Concerning the difficulty, the second half of the game started to be hard. But it doesn't ask that much leveling, except maybe for the last boss.
The graphics are really nice, and a plus during battle.
It was a pleasure to play it.

A piece of crap game!
I really don't understand why everyone is putting five stars for this game...
Poorest of poor story line.
weakest boss EVER! I didn't get a fealing of acomplishing a thing!
it was just pain of the butt for collecting materials for creating items. Come on, you might have to spend days after days, probobly like weeks to creat one item.
Stupid extra dungeons and bosses look like same, and you might have to go through them maybe like hundreds of times or more!
It was sooo frusterating that I actually gave it up.
Only good point is that you can change looks of characters by changing their epuipment.
I'm sorry but this game is a piece crap as a RPG. Don't waste you money on this...

A very enjoyable game
if you love any Dragon Quest series then you'll also love this one. You get to create your own custom character and choose what class he is and you can also see your character change appearances when he/she equips armor and weapons.

You are the hero!
I love all Dragon Quest games, but nothing could have prepared me for the magnificence of Dragon Quest IX.
This game has it all.
Lots of different monsters, equipment that changes the characters' look, character customization including height and skin color, item alchemy and too many other things to list here.
It's amazing it all fits into a game card.
The game includes furigana text that should make it easier for importers to understand.
It has fantastic new music (along with a couple of classic pieces).

If you enjoyed playing Dragon Quest 8, you should enjoy this game as well. This game sold 3 million copies in Japan for a reason.
