quite a decent racing game
It's quite a decent game, and it probably is the best racing game currently available on the DS - although that's not saying much, as Asphalt (mediorce racing game) is its only competition.

Ridge Racer DS is a port of the original Ridge Racer arcade hit made over a decade ago, with elements of Ridge Racer 64. The graphics are ok, quite decent for the DS, and the game plays much like the classic Ridge Racer - you'll enjoy it if you're into arcadey type racing with lots of crazy powerslides - it's not aiming to be realistic when you don't need to brake - it's fun just powersliding through everything!

There's the classic racing mode where you attempt to beat each track to progress to another stage of more challenging tracks, etc. And there's also another challenge type mode where you can unlock new cars. I haven't been able to try the multiplayer mode, but I think it will rock.

For its price, it presents extremely good value - recommended if you're dying to play another racing game on the DS.

I ordered it on sunday night and got it today saturday moring, hong kong to the UK in under a week.

All in all the game is not half bad for under £15.

Handling problems
This game is nice and cheap but Namco did a big mistake with the handling.
A lot of bugs with the 3D engine, you drive the only car wich drift in all curves, CPU cars do not drift and take all curves at max speed so the difficulty is high.
I recommend you to wait for another car game, maybe NFSU2 when it will be released.

Having played the Ridge Racer series on psx/ps2/n64 this was not a disappointment, steady gameplay average to good gfx but with a real sense of speed.

Brilliant game for a brilliant price.
Play-Asia have outdone themselves on this on. This game aint out in the UK til the 29th of April, and yet I buy this for less than half the price it will be when it's released here, and earlier too. The game is sweet as well, really playable and lots to unlock. Fantastic! You got a DS, then you NEED this game.

I notice how the US Nintendo DS game case is a lot smaller than the ones in the UK. Unusually silly for Nintendo Europe to waste plastic like that.

Good but not great.
A little different to any other ridge racer games but still quite enjoyable. Good to finally play a true 3D racer on a handheld console. Controls are a little sketchy and the graphics sometimes look a little dodgy and collision detection is pretty shabby, but overall it does look and play quite well and single cart multiplayer make this well worth the play-asia price, i would definately recommend a purchase at this price. good but not great, until NFSU2 this will do ('',)

Good Game
One of the best games of DS

Great game.
You can't expect PSP graphics, but the gameplay is what brings this game an excellent rating.

Yes, it's more or less the N64 ridge racer title, but because you can play it anywhere - It rocks... And the price is simply outstanding....

This is a must buy game in the same league as Mario 64 DS.

Its ridge racer for your pocket.The control's are a bit twitchy at first but after a while you get used to playing the game and they iron themselves out.
Graphhicly its not bad but there are some issues with the other cars driving through you.The game itself moves at a decent frame rate and is quite smooth. If you're a ridge racer fan then its worth checking out if not then theres always urban asphalt gt which is also worth a look.

Average
Well as Ridge Racer fan i was looking forward to this release having played all ridge racer versions other than the n64 one. Its by no means a bad game its just all average compared to other games in the series, the control of the car seems too sensitive and hard to handle at times, plus you seem to collide with cars and surroundings when your not too close to them, not a bad game,give it a try.

Great Effort
As a racing fan through the ages i have played many titles on most formats, i mayself tend to prefer the ones that lean towards realism over the others.
This clearlr falls within the reals of an arcade style racer and as such, here we have a solid racer that although seems twitchy at first in the controls department once you get accustomed to it it becomes quite fun.
There is lots to be unlocked and i am to be honest surprised just how many tracks and cars are on offer here, by far eclipsing that seen in the original ridge racer on ps1 and ata far more reasoable price.
Sure its not the prettiest game out there and the visuals seem here are by far eclipsed by the psp version, but teh ds version does seem to have the edge in terms of speed.
Where this game excells though i find is in multiplayer with just a single cart you can play with up to 6 friends on a limited selection of cources with a limited selection of cars, with the host gaining the benefit that multiplayer time clocked up will eventually unlock some more cars.

With each player having a cart of their own more tracks and cars are selectable, but i have yet to test this optionn out as i have only just got the game for myself.

this game i would say is however a showcase for the wireless possibilities of the ds, while the analogue control offered by the touch screen seem a little extreme, teh fact that with just one cart you are able to get a friend up and running in under a minute without any manuals having left your game boxes is a testimate to the sheer simplicity that nintendo has put into the multiplayer aspect of the ds.

Buy in confidence as soon you will be able to flip your ds out on the train and challenge would be boy racers to a duel

Lacking
This game seems really rushed. There are a lot of features that just seem slightly lacking... places where there should be polish but there isnt... The only real "polish" is the light trails (as can be expected from a Ridge Racer game).
Biggest floor is the car interaction, which to be honest, is horid... (AI cars sometimes go thru your car causing you to stop completely)
That being said, its still a good fun game, with 'just' enough levels, and lots of cool cars... A worthwhile racer... but I'd like to check out Urban GT too...
