Beautiful entry to the series
This is my first Katamari game and I think it's very good.

I'm aware that some levels and music were recycled from the past games but this is a nice and beautiful package per se, with gorgeous presentation.

If your PS3 doesn't have backwards compatibility, this is a very recommended purchase.

Katamari fans
Remix with mostly old stages from PS2's 2 Katamari games. In HD 1080p. Stages come in different artistic form like pastel look. Support trophies, added new move is you can jump by shaking your DualShock up & down. If you didn't find Katamari fun, then this is not going to change your mind. For fans of this series, this is a really nice upgrade to the HD era. This game is something you will pop-in and play from time to time to relax and enjoy, since HD is going to stay with us for some time, this updated version is great.

The original designer Keita wasn't interested in making any more Katamari games and it clearly shows in Katamari Forever. The levels are mostly from the existing games and the music is remixes of the music from the previous games. Perhaps this is why the dramatic visual change to make it not look like its just the old games mashed together.

That said, I am a big Katamari addict and I do love this game a lot. Its the same fun feel of the previous games and same quirky king(s) to judge your (always pitiful) results. Some new changes obviously had to be incorporated to make it a "new" game and adding the hop move by shaking the controller, between level cartoons and artistic shading of the graphics are a part of that.

The black & white shading on most levels gives way to colour once you start gathering items with your katamari (other examples of the same item throughout the level suddenly become colour). This is helpful in finding quick routes to other small items when you are starting your katamari.

The only major drawbacks I find with this version are the camera angle and redraw distance. When you have a small katamari often you end up under tables or in corners and the camera just sits there showing you a closeup of a wall for a while so you don't know where to go. It does occasionally show a hole "through" the wall to let you see but its far too slow to react and far too often never happens at all. The redraw distance is far too close too, so when you get out into an open area and are trying to decide which way to go to get the most items they don't get displayed until you get close...so it just looks like empty areas and you don't know if you should waste time going in a particular direction. This is very very frustrating since the levels and objects appear to be ported straight from PS2 the PS3 should have no problems displaying more items at once. I would rather have more items to see than the silly visual effects.

At least it does allow full 1080P display (didn't Sony originally claim all PS3 games would be?!). If you are a fan of the franchise you'll enjoy it anyway even if its levels you've already played. There are trophies and online rankings etc to keep others happy. For Katamari fans this one will please a lot (even if its just the same levels you've played before).

As good as Katamari gets
I've loved the Katamari Damacy series since the first game, and I don't think any entry since then has blown me away like this one. It captures the vibe of the game perfectly, and the improved graphics and controls only make the experience better. The soundtrack is unbelievable. There's a bit of a language barrier, but non-Japanese speakers will still be able to enjoy this version very well.

Anyone who is a Katamari fan needs to have this game immediately.
