Despite its apparent crappy-ness, some people might just find something about this movie to love.
|
The Rave of the year is being held on an offshore island.
A bunch of friends who missed the boat get a lift by a quirky sea captain named Kirk and his freaky helper.
When they arrive on the island the rave is deserted and everything is in a mess.
Eventually they discover the island has been taken over by zombies and using a bunch of illegally smuggled weapons from Captain Kirk, they must fight until they can find a way off the island.
Right from get-go you can tell this movie is going to be one bumpy ride full of every zombie cliché and one huge injection of cheese.
Once again director Uwe Boll proves to be second rate.
Its clear the direction in this movie was poor and the actors tried their best with the flat script that was given to them.
Despite all these faults (way too many to go into), it does, in fact, give us the most true Zombie video game to movie conversion weve seen yet.
Having said that, House of The Dead was never that good a game in the first place.
Each scene is broken up by a few quick seconds of game footage from the original arcade game, and this adds a whole lot to the feeling of watching players in a game.
HOUSE OF THE DEAD has a few clever tricks up its sleeve including a really cool Game Over-type screen that goes red with CG blood when one of the characters dies.
Once a character dies, the camera does a 360 degree sweep around that character in a pose (like a character avatar I guess) and video game-like blood drips from the top to swallow the screen, something pretty cool that evokes memories of playing RESIDENT EVIL way back when.
Like I said, some people may just find something to love from this movie particularly fans of the old arcade game.
The set pieces also look like something ripped straight from the game and the way the camera sweeps around in certain environments definitely looks like a video game cut-scene.
The zombie make-up ranges from pretty-good to pretty-crap.
The zombies in general are pretty underwhelming although the Zombie logic is pretty cool, newer Zombies can move a lot faster than say Zombies that have been dead for many years.
This movie has some style, albeit some plagiarized style (matrix bullet time effects), but some style.
Those who get into the video game come alive mind set will be cheering in one particular scene where many characters must fight their way through hordes of Zombies to make it into the safety of the house.
In that scene it truly feels you are watching others play the game and you may end up yelling at the TV Kill that one!! Look out behind you!! Save her you idiot!! etc.
In the end, the over load of clichés and cheesy acting most probably will take away the fun from this movie. For some the small amount of fun, old school survival horror moments and the movies ability to laugh at clichés may be enough to make you over look its faults and find a warm place in your heart for it.
