The best one !
I am very satisfied with my Caanoo. I would say that it is the best handheld for emulation that you can buy nowadays. Its hardware is vigorous and the controls are very playable and trustable. I do recommend for everyone who loves emulation and retro games!

Product Review
I've been having lots of fun with my Caanoo. I always used to play emulated games on my computer, which was a hassle, but this thing is great! I have been able to put on tons of games from various consoles, arcade, sega, snes, even a few PS1 games. It also does movies, music, and web capabilities. I highly recommend it to anyone that loves portable gaming!!

So good, I bought it twice!
I use this thing so much I thought I needed a backup just in case the old one dies or GPh stop making them.
The new one had a free 4Gb SD card = GPh game pack. Nice surprise and nice to see a couple of commercial games on the device.
Hint: PCSX ReArmed is a must have PSX emulator if you buy a Caanoo.

Do not buy this system. Here's why...
I bought my Caanoo about a year ago. One of my buttons on the left hand trigger started to stick and in vain I tried to find someone who would help me fix it. I emailed Play-Asia and they told me why warranty expired and that they couldn't help me. They suggested an hardware store that specializes in fixing consoles, went to them, no help. So, I decided from reading an online tutorial to open the thing myself. Bad move. The cheap plastic and wires inside broke easily. Now my Caanoo is useless.
All this could have been avoided if the company had a decent repair or replacement service. Its unfair not to have such a service when I've paid over $150 for the console. These events will make me wary of buying another open source console from Play-Asia, Gamepark Holdings, or any smaller name company again.

Great emulation, lots of fun
The Caanoo is lots of fun and is a great handheld emulator. The shape and feel of the handheld itself is very comfortable and the variety of things it does is great (apps,movies,e-books)...The only reasons not a 5/5: the a and x buttons should have been switched positions, and it is hard to play some games with the joystick . A d-pad along with the joystick would have been good. Overall a great handheld and a must for emulator lovers.

The best retrogaming console
Perfect compromise between the PSP and the Pandora, this console oriented Retrogaming, is set according to your wishes, without possess 36,000 buttons. A buy if you emulate besides.

Overall a Great Handheld
First of all, I've played various handhelds and used emulators on various platforms but this was my first time buying a handheld specifically to run emulators with. So I can't directly compare this to any of the previous GPH models or other emulator handhelds out there. I've also only had the unit for a few weeks so this doesn't cover any long term issues that might exist.
The device itself is decent quality. The screen is very nice and has more than enough quality to accurately emulate older games, the plastic bezel around the screen cuts off the very edges but that is only really a problem for text that gets printed at the very top or bottom of the screen. It's also touch sensitive for using a stylus but thankfully that is not necessary for navigating the system UI, and since none of the emulated games I play are designed for a touch screen it's not really a feature I use. There are various other features that I don't use and also don't get in the way, such as the mic, USB host port (which is rare for a handheld device of any kind), and TV out. The thumbstick can be annoying in some cases where having physical buttons to tap would be better, but overall it works surprisingly well. It's much better than the bafflingly terrible thumbstick on the PSP for instance. The button layout is standard SNES-style, four face buttons and two bumpers on top, which works well for most games. My main gripe with the physical specs of the system is that it uses a non-removable battery (which is understandable) and a proprietary charging cable. The charging connector is annoying and clunky compared to the standard mini or micro USB charger port that most other handheld devices use these days, and it means you have to carry around yet another type of cable if you bring it anywhere.
Now on to the actual games. It comes with a 4GB SD card preloaded with a few non-emulated Korean games (in English), along with a few emulated arcade games (mostly shooters which show off the fact that you can play them with the screen rotated as it would have been in the arcades). None of them were really all that great although the rhythm game is somewhat fun. Obviously most people will be buying this to run emulators though, and there are decent ones for the system for most major consoles and classic computers. For Genesis/Megadrive (with PicoDrive), SNES (with DrPocketSnes), NES (with GPFCE), and Gameboy Color (with OhBoy), the compatibility is good and the majority of games run at full speed. Some of the 3D games from the later consoles don't run at full speed (Star Fox, Virtua Fighter, etc.) but that is not exactly a surprise since the old 3D chips in those games are notoriously difficult to emulate efficiently. You could probably fit full romsets of all of those consoles on the included 4GB card and have thousands of games ready to play. I also tried Gameboy Advance with GPSP and those games were more hit and miss, the sound was noticeably off in a lot of games and most of the more graphics intensive ones were not playable. And I installed Doom (via PrBoom) and some old point and click games (via SCUMMVM) and they all worked very well. There is a PSX emulator that I have not tried, but I am guessing that there are probably a lot of compatibility and speed issues for games at that level of comlexity. The emulators vary in quality and features but overall they are very solid, all of the ones I tried supported save states for instance which is very useful for playing old games that required written passwords to resume. The development community for the Caanoo is not as active as some other homebrew scenes, but with so many working emulators for consoles I don't think there is a huge need for a lot more effort on the part of developers.

Unexpectedly good !
Well, I have the canoo for about a year now, and I think I can make a judgement now...
First of all, the caanoo is very comfortable to play with, i have absolutely no complaint on this part. At first I didn't like the directional pad, but with habit I would say that it is surprisingly precise and comfy ! I had troubles with fighting games but now I dealt with it quite well.
I bought it for the sole purpose to play 8/16 bits&arcade classics, and I at this time, I am almost completely satisfied : I'm looking for a smooth emulation, zero frame (I HATE FRAMESKIP), and good sound. At the time I write this review, megadrive and neo geo emulators are the ones that fulfill at 95% my objective, without overclocking. There can be bugs or not working for some games, but this is peanuts. NES emulator is in the same range, nearly perfect.
Pc engine Nec emulator is excellent too, there are some flaws still for some games (music speed low, glitches for some games, etc). Let's say 88%.
Sadly, Super nintendo/famicom emulator has quite much to be improved. Emulation can be slow if you do not overclock the cpu to 680/700 Mhz... and no surprise, it will suck the battery big time !
MAME / Arcade / CPS2 : it will depends a lot on the game played. Overall, MAME emulator is a bit disappointing. I'm a huge fan of Street fighter II, and sadly I found this a bit too slow, even when overclocked. But a Final Burn alpha has just released in this end of 2011 year, let's hope that some arcade classics will run better
That leads me to the main issue of this caanoo, the battery. Do not expect autonomy such as the nintendo DS, if you play a lot you will be forced to charge the caanoo very often... And it will take 4 hours to reload the battery.
In conclusion, I would warmly recommend the caanoo for the 8/16 bits 90's lover, you will be very happy. For the future, I hope that an improved caanoo will be out : more powerful, better use of a removable battery, D-pad a la saturn ! ^^

Amazing for me
I love this handheld, I've had many handheld emulator systems and this one is the BEST by far. It plays all the oldschool classics, as well as DOOM and other classics I just can't get enough of. VERY, VERY satisfied with this product.

Cool and stuff
If you love emulation and older games this system is AMAZING! If that's not your thing...well then it probably isn't worth it. The thumbstick actually controls well even with older games and the screen is bright and clear. Just waiting for some of the emulators to improve with time...

Good
The hardware is awesome, can play many emulators and roms. However, no good NES emulator released. The one I have has a frame rate problem.

This system is very good if you want to emulate old video games. Even though the screen of the Wiz was much brighter, it was also smaller, which didn't go well with my aging eyes. I find myself playing Neo Geo games a lot on the Caanoo, which I didn't really play on the Wiz. The controller is the best one I ever used on a portable system. It's a joy to play Ms. Pac-Man with it, which requires very precise controls.

Quite the mixed bag
The Caanoo is a powerful pocket emulation machine; it seems to be solidly built, and the screen is good. Yet, it has its share of stupid design flaws. The analog stick is terrible, the face buttons are too small, the triggers are very rigid, the speakers are on the back of the unit, and it requires a clumsy external wi-fi unit. Count me as disappointed.

Nostalgia...
This one really brought me to the time when I was young. It's amazing! It has a lot of retro console emulators as well as emulator for ZX Spectrum. If you were growing in 1990-x, this is for you.
I really liked it!
Analog joystick is also very handful.
I think it worth every penny.

Much more powerfull than Dingoo, but not so expensive like Pandora - Caanoo is balanced system.
Thanx to GPH and Play-Asia ;)

for retro gamers
if you are into retro gaming, caanoo is the emulator for you. the screen isn't fabulous but its good enough to play all your retro games. emulates a lot of golden oldies well and be prepared to get REALLY NOSTALGIC with all you old games!

Great device great gaming
Apart from some minor things (like volume control) this device rocks as an portable emulator console. I haven't even touched the 4GB SDHC card that came with it. Everthing runs smooth except for some random games (mostly Mame) like Double Dragon. Cool thing is that if a populair game is slow on mame, there most likely is a console port available.

will recommend
The pros, excellent system and many emulators for video games, the cons are little, but the SNES emulator while playing Super Bomberman 2, freezes, and a few other SNES roms, I would recommend this to anyone,

Caanoo
The System itself is Awesome. It is easy to set up once you figure out the .ini files required by the system to run each program. These are easy and straight forward. So far everything I have run is great. The Screen is Beautiful. Keep in mind the system is still new. The Average Battery life is 5 to 7 Hours depending on the Game to play. The Touch Screen is great, and the Motion Control works fine. Even the Vibration works with some of the Original Games being made for it. I am happy that I got this and expect greater things from it in the Future. Play-Asia has it for the Best Price on the Internet, so buy it from here. It was just under $140 with Shipping and handling. Definitely buy from Play-Asia.

VPN caanoo
Mostly perfect. Compared to gp32 and gp2x it is fantastic. Mame and neogeo are near faultless. Mega drive is 100% and 32x is being improved right now. Snes is about 85% there. Music is great but movies take some trial and error. Nec and gba working well. Akita needs some work but is a brand new port. Build quality fantastic. If developers keep supporting caanoo, it will be the ultimate. Overall, very happy and can recommend :)

Awesome handheld gaming device
I gave this to my boyfriend as a gift and he really loves it. I was surprised that it came with a 4GB SD card which was helpful since it has no internal memory. Easy to get the emulators and games you want on it.
A couple of negatives-it has issues with the SD card, it'll show that its not inserted when it is and we have to take it out and out it back in and its not the best touch screen but when playing old school games you dont really have a need for it. Overall a really great item.

great potential, a few major flaws
great handheld but does have some major flaws.
#1. and most aggrivating, HORRIBLE volume control/button. It might as well just be a volume on/off switch. If you want toa ctually control volume you will need to do it within your applications.
#2 the speakers are right where you hold the system. so as you play you move your hands and cver and uncover the left and right speakers making volume change all over the place. very very annoyong during gameplay
#3 probably a firmware issue but my system freezes all the time and must be restarted, even then sometimes it wont recognize the SD card and will need restarted again or SD card be removed and re inserted.
its a good handheld to fill in the gaps for games teh WIZ or Dingoo wont run.
the volume issues are so bad I am going to be disassembling my Caanoo and relocating the speakers AND adding an in line volume control. I dont know how it ever got released for mass production with the volume issues

i love it

I bought it for vjing with "superpikix" but i'm insane with Mame and other emulators.
Reads divx movies with subtitles direct from a pendrive
I'm happy with my new son

The best game for those who want a little more freedom
I have played enough, it is the game I always wanted.
Strengths:
There are many emulators available for it and an SDK for developing applications that want to use.
I found the game great have come with a 4GB card.
I really enjoyed your directional, vaguely reminiscent of the Neo Geo CD, but it's better than the PSP and the Nintendo DS (at least for me).
The emulators work when the game run perfectly.
There are several options for overclocking games.
Negative points:
He has no wireless network card as described in the box and you play via the network, have to buy a wireless network card specifically for that, my luck did not buy because of it.
I had a little accident with it and so I had to open the unit to see if there was any damage, then discovered that if one day need to replace your battery, this will not be an easy task.
The 8-bit Nes emulator is not as good as you like.
Tips:
If you want to play Neo Geo because there are many conflicts with bios and roms, choose the Neo Geo CD emulator that works all Neo Geo games without problems.
If you try to put in some input usb bluetooth adapter or a wireless network card unknown, probably will delete your screen and you can not connect your video game for the next 15 minutes. So do not.
What I expected:
I still do not know if it's possible, but because it works with Linux, I was hoping I could get it and to build repositories Yabause (Sega Saturn emulator), but do not know if this is possible.
There is an application that simulates a Linux terminal, but it has some limitations that do not yet know how to solve.

There is an application that simulates a Linux terminal, but it has some limitations that do not yet know how to solve.

brilliant piece of equipment
I use it for games, movies and MP3 player. Battery lasts a long time. HUGE online community.
I owned a GP2x F200 and this machine quality is way better, easily on part with the build quality of the DS or PSP.

Great device
I had a lot of fun with my old GP2X device so I decided to get the latest one from GPH and I have to say that it's a great device. The improvements I like: internal battery, nice screen, a good analog stick and a better overall quality of the product. There are not as much emulators available, but I think it's a question of time.

Play Forward!
I am very happy with your purchase. Caanoo really is an excellent choice among modern portable consoles.
I like:
- Large screen, high picture quality and response.
- Controls well placed.
- Quality of materials in construction.
- Large amounts of material and SDK's development.
- Global Community active.
- USB port.
- Option to wi-fi.
- Compatible with SDHC.
- Hardware very robust and powerful.
- Design and color options.
- Excellent video playback (DivX / Xvid) and sound.
I hate:
- Online shop FunGP abandoned.
- Packing without battery charger and headphones.
- Games unique only in Korean.
- Incompatible with apps and games for other consoles (and GP2X Wiz).
- Internal battery.
- Position the speakers unhappy.
Who likes the open source scene or just want something different to the known portable Japanese, you will certainly enjoy much of Caanoo!

worst service waited for more than 5 weeks and still didnt get it!

Caanoo
After the emulators develop better, this will be the perfect cheap opensource handheld. Supports PSX games and PicoDrive runs perfectly. Nothing feels better than old games of my childhood in the palm of my hand.

No title
Wow...what a great device! I've just moved from the older F-200 model to the Caanoo and just WOW!
The device no longer feels cheaply constructed, the buttons are much quieter and have a better response. The analogue stick works very well! even with arcade games such as CPS2 and Neogeo emulators aswell as SNES and Megadrive.
The device runs at 533mhz stock, which isn't quite enough to run many games smoothly, this however can be avoided by overclocking (many apps/emulators have builtin options to do this). I have been able to run at 800mhz for long periods of time with no issues.
Just take note that battery life is cut when overclocked, this brings me to the next comment...the battery isn't removable...while the play time of ~4hrs at stock CPU is fine, it would be nice to buy spare batteries which will also increase the life of the device.
Simply put; I love:
* The screen is crisp, bright and has a high response time.
* The analogue stick and buttons mostly work well (see below).
* Built in stereo speakers are quite good and have a good volume.
* LOTS of games/emulators available online from sites such as openhandheld.
* Well built device, doesn't feel cheap and still doesn't feel heavy.
I Hate:
* non removable battery.
* wifi is via an EXTERNAL adapter?? (which cuts battery life once again) seriously!
* the analogue stick has a click button like the 360/ps3 does, however this is very awkward to use, don't know of anything that uses it though.
* This device sucks as a video player, don't buy it for this! Get a decent Archos or something!
GPH are heading in a good direction imo, things just need to be tweaked a little and a little more processing power would be helpful.
Also of note, the "# 2 gigabyte flash memory" advertised doesn't exist. Ensure that you have a SD card when you get this. I recommend a "Kingmax Secure Digital HD Card 32GB Class 10" which can be bought right here from PA. Also get the "Caanoo Jelly Protection Case" ^^
If you love emulation on the run, get this!

Excellent... Mobile Emulator
The Caanoo is an excellent mobile console and multi console emulator. When all settings are correct everything works as it should. As a PMP it is decent enough to handle everything basic. It wont be replacing my ipad or streak for music, videos, and e-reader but its a good backup.
Build Quality 5 out of 5
UI (user interface) 4 out of 5
Software 4 out of 5
Community 5 out of 5

Great Console
Way better casing than Wiz (i broke mine accidentally).
Larger screen really makes difference.
I recommend it a lot!
Note:
Snes and Nes emulators are not 100% ready yet, so if you want to play these ones, wait a little to buy this console or buy a Wiz instead.

Caanoo
The resolution of the screen is the same as Wiz, but it is an advantage that screen size is big.
The force of the game increases.
A volume switch became the slide type and is easy to have come to control it.
This is the best console to play games!

This console is very good ... I recommend this store. Properly delivered as agreed. The package arrived in 4 weeks.

Caanoo
I've had my Caanoo for a couple of months now and I thought I would wait until the software development catches up before I reviewed it.
It's excellent. Emulators are being ported to it at a rate of knots some of which are very good.
The screen is bright and clear with only a hint of colour distortion from top to bottom, presumably due to slightly uneven backlighting, but you won't really notice it.
The little joystick nub is a delight to use once you've got used to it. It does take a little bit of getting used to from a d-pad but persevere and you will learn to love it.
One minor gripe is the location of the speakers at the rear of the unit. The sound is very good, but when using the shoulder buttons you sometimes muffle the speakers with your fingers but it is a minor problem.
Some of the freeware games being made for it are very good too but if emulation is your bag then you will not be disappointed.
It's an excellent little device for gaming on the go.
I'm very pleased with it and I think you will be too. Buy one.

A good built player
Although this caanoo has good built compared to an chinese game system, the rough analog pad is a bit odd. Its rough surface gets dirt too often. With the proprietary data (and charging) cable becomes hard to charge and put data on caanoo. Some apps are hard to install, but compared to an chinese game system it's painless.
As this PMP is young, you will not have too much fun apps as other chinese game system has.
The quality of the components are great, despite the analog pad.
loved the games from fungp! They worth the price.
Because it's bigger than other chinese game system, hurts less after hours of gameplay.
The sound quality is very good and the screen is beautiful.

Almost perfect
I love the Caanoo! There are only a few items I have issues with. First and foremost is the inability to register on FunGP. I never receive a confirmation email, and thus cannot log on. Secondly, the volume slider is temperamental; probably could've been better designed.
Overall, though, the Caanoo is unbelievable! I have already recommended it to all my friends and coworkers!

20 percent short of amazing.
The Caanoo open game system is a good handheld from GPH. I ordered the white version, and I think the unit is stunning to look at. However, I feel this is a console that is only 80 percent of the way to being absolutely amazing. Unfortunately, it’s that missing 20 percent of finish that makes this portable experience worse than it had to be.
The screen itself is very good quality. I had a very difficult time finding ghosting even when playing very fast moving games such as Sonic. However, the screen is unevenly lit. It’s very obvious that the backlight is located at the bottom. This causes the colors on the bottom of the screen to be a bit blown out and the colors at the top to be a bit darker. Thankfully, this is not very noticeable when playing games with a lot of detail. However, owners of the console have remarked that when playing the games with a lot of solid colors, the uneven backlight causes the solid colors to appear as gradients.
On the topic of the screen. The plastic frame surrounding the LCD actually overlaps the screen and cuts off a couple pixels. This is not a huge problem for emulated TV games, as most old TVs would cut off the edges as well. But some arcade games and quickly ported software might have some of the content cut off.
The speakers, are nice and loud. However there is one basic problem, they are located on the back of the console. First, this destroys any stereo separation a game might have. Second, when using the Caanoo’s shoulder buttons, your fingers might cover speakers ... making them useless. For any serious gaming, your going to want to use headphones. It makes you wonder why the speakers didn’t get routed to the bottom or top or the front as they are practically useless on the back.
There are other issues such as the really cheap feeling power button, and the start/select buttons (labeled I and II) not feeling great in Tate mode shooters, but these are nit-picking.
There are many things about this console that are excellent as well. There is an actual, full size USB host port that can work with many peripherals, including USB gamepads (Picodrive allows for input from USB sources). The touch screen seems accurate. The console is nice to hold. The buttons feel pretty good. The thumb stick (when setup correctly within the software) can feel very good and does not make you long for a D-pad. You can play arcade shooters in Tate (vertical orientation). Tv out is supported. If you buy a wifi module, you will be able to do online stuff when software eventually is made for it.
It’s pretty much up to the homebrew developers now to make this system really shine. And I would recommend the Caanoo to someone who is looking for a emulation/homebrew handheld. Given a couple months, this handheld will have an amazing software library to support the platform.

GP2X Caanoo White Review
I was very pleased to get my Caanoo! It took a little time to get the files set up correctly so that the games and apps ran, but I figured it out pretty quick. I have an IT background though, so it may be harder for someone without (?) CPS2 games run very fast and smooth and it seems like this system was made for Genesis games! Playing Doom and Quake on this little device has been a real treat also. I would have liked the color black better, but that's a small detail. I am having problems with the GPFun website being able to download games :( Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase.

Caanoo is ace!
I'm very pleased with Play Asia's service, and the Caanoo itself. I have got a couple of issues with the main FunGP site in that it requires Windows to work, and their DRM software PC Manager also requires Windows... I think they are working on Mac and Linux versions so I'm hoping that won't be a problem for too long. There are plenty of compatible emulators available now, and a few freeware games so there is plenty to choose from!
The first SD card I tried with the Caanoo had problems. Either the card wasn't working correctly, or the Caanoo didn't recognise the format it was, but it's working perfectly with a 16GB Kingston SD card now.
The screen, while not being the OLED of the Wiz is clear and bright, the touchscreen is very sensitive, and the sound is top quality. Videos play smoothly too.
I only have a few minor gripes with it:
[1] the notorious analogue stick - while this is great for accuracy in some games, playing games like Street Fighter 2 and some other platform games can be slightly trickier as it's not as precise;
[2] the e-book reader... currently only reads txt files, and doesn't support other character sets well.
[3] depending on the games, it can be tricky to either get used to the layout of the buttons or to map them to something sensible. However this isn't a problem with the device, just something that can make it a little tricky to set-up and/or get used to.
There are too many good points to mention though! It's fun; well constructed; good battery life; bright and clear; and there are new games and applications being brought out regularly!

This was one of the best buys in recent times
This works very well as GP2X handheld game console, video player and mp3. The only thing that is not how you would like is the e-book reader, then, to my country (Brazil), Caanoo not come with support for characters needed to Portuguese. But I think this is temporary, since the main positive point is that it piggyback on a Linux structure, or open source. I believe that soon we will have to PDF reader for it.
The battery lasts a long time with the device in operation.
The controls are precise and have above average sensitivity.
The touchscreen also has great sensitivity.
Great sound output, and with the vibration system activated, it adds more impact to action.
It is very easy to add games to the SD card and in the absence of one, you can put emulators and games on the stick and playing directly into the USB port (provided that the emulators are compatible with Caanoo).
Besides the good price and service from Play-Asia which was very dedicated to the international call. Communication was constant and was able to follow my order by the number of sending. The product also came well protected and most perfect conditions.
I recommend to everyone.

Solid system, well worth the money
I have the first 2 iterations of the gp2x, and I have to say that the build quality of this system is the best gp2x to date. The system feels solid and has nice controls. The joypad reminds of the control pad that was on the zodiac. This is a good thing in my opinion. The screen is large and looks nice. The sound can go from low to high in volume with the handy volume slider on the top of the unit. This switch is nicely positioned so that it wont accidentally be pressed while you are playing your games.
There were initial problems with the FunGP website, but the problems have since been fixed and I think it will only get better in the future.
There is a great homebrew scene that is forming to take advantage of the Caanoo. This coupled with the solid hardware design makes the Caanoo a winner in my book.

while hoping that of another plays seeing the day… possibility of connected the console to a post office TV I find that the sound quality of the caanoo is very good… I hope that not badly plays wifi will vairont the day for small challenges, and that the community will increase.
for the moment there exist can of plays be downloaded on their fungp.com site my I imagine that goes advanced, the prices of the plays remains very corretct

Really solid system, I look forward to getting a good use out of it.
I've had my Caanoo for about a week now and I really like the hardware, it feels a like more professional than the past GP2X and Wiz systems.
The analogue stick is the best direction input on one of their systems yet, and the face buttons and and general build is just so nice.
The touch screen also works very well.
General features like playing music and video work nicely, it's certainly not going to replace a dedicated portable media player though.
FunGP has been a pain but it's finally working now, but the main reason I bought this was for the open-source software, which is growing each day.
I'm already enjoying a little bit of emulation on the system.
