Old school fellas, buy it now! Lost Odyssey feels like an old school J-RPG, like a good one.
A mix of FFVI, FFVII and Chrono Trigger.

Lost Odyssey If there were an epic game with a "who's who" Japanese production team, Lost Odyssey would fit the bill. The game is published by Microsoft but developed by the legendary Hironobu Sakaguchi - father of the hit Final Fantasy series. Other big names assisting include Takehiko Inoue - famous creator of the hit manga series Slam Dunk, Nubuo Uematsu - famed music composer of many Final Fantasy games and another famous scribe, Kiyoshi Shigematsu. Packaged in four DVDs, this is possibly the biggest video game ever. It's easy to see why - the graphics are awesome, characters look very real in high-definition, movie cutscenes are cinema-quality and designed to make you weep. As for gameplay, it's just very, very long. Lost Odyssey isn't for everyone. You won't find instant hack-and-slash action like in Diablo or the complex character customisation of World Of Warcraft. What you get is a long-drawn but engaging story about an amnesic 1,000-year-old immortal hero Kaim who slowly regains his memory as the game progresses. Much time is spent unearthing his melancholic and chivalric values, as he explores the world and familiar scenes trigger flashbacks. When that happens, you will be "treated" to long text-based stories, part of the 1,000 years dream" feature of the game. I read only the first one and not another word. Combat is turn-based and you can control multiple characters one at a time. You need to place your meat-tanks in the front row to protect the characters at the back - usually low hit point spell casters. Every character and monster on the battlefied has an "attack speed" which decides who goes first. Your "melee" characters will charge towards the enemy and a giant ring will appear. Press the right trigger immediately and the giant ring shrinks towards an inner ring. When both are aligned, release the right trigger to unleash more damage. There are different kinds of magic and attacks, from the purely physical to elemental-based ones like fire and water. Shooting a fireball at a fire-based creature won't hurt it much but a water-based attack will. A good strategy is to use your casters to heal while the brawny characters attack with swords. Like the traditional Final Fantasy series, there are plenty of random battles that sprout as your explore nooks and crannies to find objects to boost your fighting prowess or heal your heroes. Overall, Lost Odyssey is very traditional Japanese-style RPG. If you liked Final Fantasy VII and Grandia, this is definitely for you. But if senseless violence and carnage is not your cup of tea, Lost Odyssey isn't the jouirney for you to embark on.
Best RPG for a long time. Lost Odyssey is by far the best RPG I've played in quite a few years. The gameplay is solid, the story is incredible, the characters are memorable, the graphics & music are both beautiful, and it has hands-down the best voice acting of any game ever made. I can't say enough good about this game. My only complaint is the fact that the game itself ends.
