Old school fellas, buy it now!
Lost Odyssey feels like an old school J-RPG, like a good one.

A mix of FFVI, FFVII and Chrono Trigger.

    Lost Odyssey
If there were an epic game with a "who's who" Japanese production team, Lost Odyssey would fit the bill. The game is published by Microsoft but developed by the legendary Hironobu Sakaguchi - father of the hit Final Fantasy series. Other big names assisting include Takehiko Inoue - famous creator of the hit manga series Slam Dunk, Nubuo Uematsu - famed music composer of many Final Fantasy games and another famous scribe, Kiyoshi Shigematsu. Packaged in four DVDs, this is possibly the biggest video game ever. It's easy to see why - the graphics are awesome, characters look very real in high-definition, movie cutscenes are cinema-quality and designed to make you weep. As for gameplay, it's just very, very long. Lost Odyssey isn't for everyone. You won't find instant hack-and-slash action like in Diablo or the complex character customisation of World Of Warcraft. What you get is a long-drawn but engaging story about an amnesic 1,000-year-old immortal hero Kaim who slowly regains his memory as the game progresses. Much time is spent unearthing his melancholic and chivalric values, as he explores the world and familiar scenes trigger flashbacks. When that happens, you will be "treated" to long text-based stories, part of the 1,000 years dream" feature of the game. I read only the first one and not another word. Combat is turn-based and you can control multiple characters one at a time. You need to place your meat-tanks in the front row to protect the characters at the back - usually low hit point spell casters. Every character and monster on the battlefied has an "attack speed" which decides who goes first. Your "melee" characters will charge towards the enemy and a giant ring will appear. Press the right trigger immediately and the giant ring shrinks towards an inner ring. When both are aligned, release the right trigger to unleash more damage. There are different kinds of magic and attacks, from the purely physical to elemental-based ones like fire and water. Shooting a fireball at a fire-based creature won't hurt it much but a water-based attack will. A good strategy is to use your casters to heal while the brawny characters attack with swords. Like the traditional Final Fantasy series, there are plenty of random battles that sprout as your explore nooks and crannies to find objects to boost your fighting prowess or heal your heroes. Overall, Lost Odyssey is very traditional Japanese-style RPG. If you liked Final Fantasy VII and Grandia, this is definitely for you. But if senseless violence and carnage is not your cup of tea, Lost Odyssey isn't the jouirney for you to embark on.

Best RPG for a long time.
Lost Odyssey is by far the best RPG I've played in quite a few years. The gameplay is solid, the story is incredible, the characters are memorable, the graphics & music are both beautiful, and it has hands-down the best voice acting of any game ever made. I can't say enough good about this game. My only complaint is the fact that the game itself ends.

    Rebirth of Turn-based
Ignore the critics and arrogant reviewers for a moment and think about what you as a gamer want. If you're like most JRPG fans and have a fondness for the tried and true turn-based formula, then absolutely get this game. If you've never played a turn-based JRPG before and are curious, definitely give this game a try.

It's time to stop letting critics tell us gamers what's cool and what's outdated. This game is a prime example of reviewers getting ahead of themselves and failing to understand what JRPG gamers want or desire. Like fine aged-wine this game is a distillation of decades of Sakaguchi's JRPG pedigree.

    Impressive, but...
there are certain flaws, which are difficult to overlook.
It is quite a decent looking Final Fantasy game for the 360, very old school and just another generic Jap. rpg.
Nevertheless, I think it s worth a play.

    Great game
It is one of my first J-RPG's, and I am really surprised. The visual is amazing and the story is really good. The English voices are good, too, and overall the game is a must-buy for anyone who likes the Asian styled role play games. It works on PAL machines!

    Highly recommended
I´ve been playin through Disc 1, and I can assure every JRPG Fan a very enjoyable ride. Fast paced combat, neat character development, excellent dialoge and voiceover and a cinematic way of storytelling. Graphics are great most of the time, with few exceptions. The overall atmosphere, mood and style of the game is brilliant. Just what Blue Dragon has been lacking. This is a great step further for Mistwalker and I think it is possible that they will create true "Milestone" RPGs again just like in good ol´ Squarsoft Times !

    Brilliant RPG!
This is a brilliant game. Whilst I think the graphics could have been a little better, the gameplay and storyline are amazing. Lots of very unsettling themses to do with death and mortality and very well written dialogue. The voice acting and character expressions are done really well too- Janson is hillarious! Highly recommended.

The RPG 360 owners have been waiting for...
If you loved the final fantasy old-school RPGs then this game is for you. Classic adventure and exploration is constant, as well as the turn based battles Final fantasy made famous. This is just as good as any of the FF games and is a welcome addition to any RPG fans collections.

    Highly recommended! *****

    symbion (1) on 28, Dec. 2007 00:08 (HKT)

A masterpiece in the classic vein slightly marred by technical issues.
With people behind the wheel such as Hironobu Sakaguchi (the creator of Final Fantasy), Nobuo Uematsu (FF's famed composer), and development team feelplus, made up primarily of ex-Nautilus staff -- creators of greats like The Legend of Dragoon (PS1) and the Shadow Hearts series (PS2), it's not hard to see how Mistwalker's latest 360 epic, Lost Odyssey, has the potential for greatness, and I'm happy to say that the game does live up to the hype.

First of all, the music is absolutely incredible. You know right from when you first hear the game's main theme that you're in for something special. What shines through most though, like in most of Uematsu's soundtracks, are the game's battle themes. Multiple boss themes set the mood for each battle and keep the tension high. Speaking of battles, Lost Odyssey probably has one of the best battle systems I've ever played. The Wall System and the general difficulty of battles make things very strategic -- unlike many RPGs that can be beaten just by mashing A over and over, LO requires strategy even in lowly monster battles. Buffs are actually rendered useful in this game when you're trying to keep your front line stable so your back row of mages is kept safe. The graphics, powered by Epic's Unreal Engine 3, are absolutely beautiful. The character designs by famed manga artist Takehiko Inoue (Vagabond, Slam Dunk) are wonderfully brought to life, and the world itself has a very PS1-era Final Fantasy feel. The story is epic, enthralling, and as a reviewer in the Japanese gaming magazine Weekly Famitsu put it, "bitter," and the short stories penned by famed Japanese author Kiyoshi Shigematsu sprinkled throughout the game are amazingly well-written, regularly able to bring me to tears. I can only hope the game's English localization is able to preserve the amazing writing present in these stories.

While the production values are certainly great, the game is not without its problems, all of them, in my opinion, technical in nature. First and foremost, this game at points can have some of the worst loading times I've ever experienced in a JRPG. Be prepared to look at the same character art over and over as your 360 is loading massive amounts of data off the DVD. Sadly, I think this issue could have been somewhat assuaged if the game allowed some of the data to be installed on the hard drive, but then again, I'm not a developer. Other more minor issues include framerate drops and tearing during busy cutscenes.

If you're an RPG fan, though, don't pass over this game strictly because of its technical shortcomings. You'd be missing out on a great experience. There's so much that this game does right that it's not worth skipping. With the Final Fantasy series seemingly turning away from the direction of its earlier incarnations, Lost Odyssey still retains the classic feel of its spiritual predecessors. With Mistwalker cranking out games like this, fans like myself disillusioned with the direction Square Enix has been taking as of late with its flagship series still have a company to fall back on.
