description
Building a better system from the ground up sometimes involves digging into even the most mundane components. Take memory cards, for instance. To provide larger storage capacity and faster access rates--PlayStation2 cards transfer data 200 times faster than cards for the original PlayStation--PlayStation2 developers have upgraded the technology for the new memory card. The 8 MB Memory Card uses Flash Memory, the storage technology that's revolutionizing handheld computers, digital cameras, and MP3 players. In contrast, the 128 KB memory cards that were designed for the original PlayStation use memory blocks. While large files can spill over several blocks, you can't store more than one file per block in that design, no matter how small the file. The 8 MB Memory Card allieviates that problem by organizing and storing files much more like a computer hard disk.

It's a memory card, save your games with them.
You must own these in order to save games, replays, options, or any other form of content on any game. Being a Sony made item for their system, this is the kind you want. Their whole purpose is to save data and they do it well. I tried it on my American PS2 and it works fine as well as the Japanese one. You can also cross save data meaning you can have 1 game for both regions (say Megaman X7) where they will each have separate files. One will be a file for the Japanese Rockman X7 and the other will be for the American Megaman X7. They are the same game and have the same file name, but have different regions going with them, so you will have 2 separate game save files. So you can save a few games from you Japanese console and a few games from your American console on a single card. They are not region protected.

Hard to find gems
These babies are hard to find, especially original ones (not enough the Sony store here carries them anymore.) These will last and not fail 3 months down the road like cheap knockoffs, causing loss of countless hrs of progress.
