description
Dead Head Fred is a unique 3rd person-action game created exclusively for the PSP. An original 1940's inspired alternative universe is blended with a slice of old time Americana, producing a morally bankrupt town ruled by violent organized crime and populated with mutants spawned from toxic waste. You are private detective Fred Neuman, savagely murdered and then resurrected in a bizarre scientific experiment without your memory or your head. Embark on a quest for vengeance as you solve your own murder by using the severed heads of enemies to battle your way through environments designed to showcase each head's unique abilities. Dead Head Fred immerses you into the action with the most revolutionary camera to date on a handheld device as you collect, upgrade and switch the heads of enemies on the fly to strategically fight malformed mutants, ghoulish gangsters, and maniacal mob bosses.

    Dead Head Fred
Who would have thought that murder and decapitation would make such a fun game? Now, before the censors start running around trying to classify this game, let it be said that this game is more Addams Family than Mason Family. Fred Neuman is your typical nice guy who, while investigating the disappearance of his girlfriend's Dad, ends up on a mob hit list and literally loses his head. A mad scientist steps in and resurrects Fred, but with two glaring changes. Fred's brains and eyeballs are now stored in a glass jar that replaces his actual head, and he has amnesia. Which explains his desire to uncover the truth and his ability to switch heads with the people Fred comes across in his quest. Each skull he discovers bestows upon him a new ability, such as the power to breathe underwater, to inhale large amounts of fuel and even super strength. And Fred will require each of his new abilities to complete the various puzzles in the game - from filling up a power generator with fuel and dousing flames with water, to surviving a fall into a pond, using his ability to breathe underwater. Talk about using your head to survive in this game. Rather than playing out as an action game with different abilities given to the main character, Dead Head Fred plays more like a mixture of puzzle, action and adventure. Fred can also explore the town of Hope Falls and take on jobs with the residents. These produce rewards in terms of money and items, which Fred can use to upgrade his head. Now, if only the developers took some care in using their heads when it came to game controls. For a game that relies on Fred to jump around and fight off enemies, the controls can get sluggish and imprecise and this is a huge no-no when it comes to button-mashing games. But combine the action with some rather funny dialogue, especially the twisted ones that reflect on the dark nature of the game, and the result is an enjoyable game worh losing some grey cells over.

Great premise, pity about the camera + controls
If you want an entertaining adventure title, DHF is it. Wonderfully dark humor, great graphics, incredible voice acting, especially from that Dr Cox guy from Scrubs.

So where's the bad news? Unfortunately, there's plenty of that too. Frequent loading, a camera system that reminds the more hardcore players of MH1 and MH2, and controls that make what would've been easy fights into lessons in restraint.

Still, if anyone (and there are plenty of those around) can succeed despite the awkward camera angles, they should go for this title. The controls get easier along the way (I hope!).
