solid shooter tradition, and a new version This gets full marks soley on the basis of how good Procyon and (?forget name...) weapons look and sound (in Shienryu Explosion). I even found myself getting right into the ship customisation options for this title, changing the colours and all that, which I rarely care about. The first thing you notice is this is really easy, get into level 3 and it starts getting more like usual vert level difficulty. It doesn't seem boring tho', it's very dreamy, lulls you into a false sense of security and then you die.
Shienryu itself is a good one too. Apart from the no-instant-respawn. Recommended.

Arcade Perfect Shienryu! This version of the "classic" Shienryu is arcade-perfect: no flickering and almost permanent smooth scrolling set this version apart from the Sega Saturn port. and unlike the ps1 port, this one features true tate (vertical) screen-support.
Shienryu features classic toaplan/raiden gameplay with similar attention-to-detail 2D graphics. It is for sure not the best Shoot'em up, but real fun for fans of the genre with nice graphics and time-tested gameplay. the only negative point is that you can't set up the controller as you like.
Shienryu Explosion, on the other hand, is pure garbage (seen from the shmuppers view). much too easy, relatively ugly 3D graphics and boring gameplay make this game unplayable in my opinion. maybe (???) something for people who haven't played classic shooters for a while and are pleased with the almost nonexistent difficulty.
in fact, shienryu is worth the money for this packade alone, so people who like shmups can't do anything wrong in urchasing this game. people who own the saturn port must choose: if you play this game with horizontal tv-setting, you won't notice much difference. but if you play vertical, this port is *much* better playable than the saturn port. and that shienryu explosion ist on this cd too, who cares?
