description
Play-Asia.com says:

Horrible video transfer ruins what should be a classic Fantasy/Comedy.
The plot requires a lot of concentration to follow.

The Longevity Monk travels to India with his disciple Monkey King to bring back the Buddhist Scriptures.
Monkey King, being the crude man he is, insults the Goddess of Mercy and is destroyed by her.
Longevity Monk sacrifices his life to reincarnate Monkey King back to human form.

*flash forward 500 years*

A beautiful woman travels into a village of thieves called "The Axe Gang" (or something like that, please bear with me).
This woman turns out to be a spider demon that is searching for the reincarnation of the Monkey King.
The Joker (Stephen Chow), who is the leader of the gang, tries to kill the demon until he meets her sister called Jing Jing (Karen Mok).
Jing Jing is also a demon, Boney M (confused yet?), who once loved the Monkey King and was going to marry him, but the Monkey King left her.
Boney M still loves the Monkey King and The Joker pretends to be the Monkey King to save his gang.

Jing Jing and Joker fall in love and Joker turns out to be the Monkey King reincarnated.
The Joker finds the Pandora's Box which can travel through time.

The plot of this movie is so confusing and hard to keep track of and you can bet it gets even more confusing in Part II.
The main problem with the plot is that there is so many names thrown around that if you don't take note of them you won't know who's who.
Despite the films plot being as confusing as it is, it is such an enjoyable movie and at the end you are really satisfied with the events that transpired before it. So much happens in the hour an a half and that is a huge plus, because of this the time is used very well for Part I and II and it's very satisfying to watch a 2 part movie that doesn't waste it's time.

The comedy is an excellent blend between slapstick and subdued humor. Stephen Chow proves himself to be a great actor and comic genius (I've heard that he is much better in his other movies, if so I can't wait to watch them because he rocked in this).
The acting all round is excellent with all the leads being comical and serious when the occasion calls for it.
Karen Mok is especially good using her humor at exactly the right moment while still portraying a heart broken woman that feels a lot of emotional pain and is also very strong and tough when fighting.

A CHINESE ODYSSEY 1 not only blends comedy, drama and fantasy, it also chucks in some crazy kung fu as well as some giant demon fights (more reministic of Power Rangers than Godzilla).
The fighting isn't that great and tends not to go for a particular fighting style or strong choreography. Instead, it mostly consists of the actors swinging their swords and whips in the enemies general direction while also doing a fly kick or two.

The demon costumes/puppets are purposely unrealistic, which gives it that classic low budget FX feel like movies from the 1970's.
The spider demons puppetry is hilariously unrealistic.

All the fantasy costumes and demon outfits work perfectly with the story and comedy and in the end you get a great film with throwbacks to classic 70's Chinese fantasies with hilarious slapstick comedy and superb acting.
The biggest flaw with this movie is not the movie itself but the horrible video conversion, the burned on subs and the lack of DVD menus (I have the suspicion the publisher is giving us a VCD disguised as a DVD).

Despite the bad video conversion and its VCD qualities, this film is a definent buy for those interested.

HIGHLY RECOMENDED
