In 1998, when entrepreneur Li Ka Shing was first interviewed by RTHK for Success Stories, the Hong Kong economy was hitting a trough. Corporate profits, including those at Cheung Kong Holdings and Hutchison Whampoa Limited, were in decline. Li remained optimistic and steered his Group towards sustained growth. In 2007, his Cheung Kong and Hutchison Whampoa Groups are employing 260,000 people in 56 countries worldwide.

Li Ka Shing started out as an apprentice at the age of twelve, and worked his way up to factory owner and successful entrepreneur. Today, he is the world's richest Chinese and Chairman of a global conglomerate. Still working as hard and enjoying every moment, Li admits heartily that there is one difference - he is spending more time on charity work than he did ten years ago.

In 1980, Mr. Li set up a charitable foundation in his own name to promote a "culture of giving." He likens the foundation to a "third son" and plans to give "him" one-third of his wealth. "We must in our hearts see building society as a duty in line with supporting our children. By choosing to apportion our wealth and means - by investing in social capital - as we give to our children, we will, indeed, make the world better for them," Mr. Li said. "Our reorientation of perspective today will bring great hope and promises for the future."
