features
  • Metroid: Other M takes the best elements of 1st-person and 3rd-person gaming to create a seamless blend between gameplay, story-telling and dynamic cinematography, that feels like a movie the player can control.Players hold the Wii Remote controller sideways while navigating and battling in 3rd-person. However, at any moment, players can switch immediately to Wii Remote pointer controls to examine and explore the environments in 1st-person perspective
  • Metroid fans know more about Samus’ suits and weapons than they do about what drives her. That’s about to change. The story begins immediately following the events of Super Metroid, when a baby Metroid gave its life to protect Samus. With voice acting and a rich story, players learn the engaging backstory of Samus as she weaves through an action-packed adventure aboard the Bottle Ship, a decommissioned space facility. As she hurtles into this new adventure, Samus will encounter her first mentor and Commanding Officer of the Galactic Federation, Adam Malkovich
  • The development of Metroid: Other M is an exciting collaboration between Nintendo’s Yoshio Sakamoto and Team Ninja. Sakamoto was the director of Super Metroid in 1994. Team Ninja is the renowned action developer of Ninja Gaiden. Metroid: Other M pairs Sakamoto’s expert level design and exploratory focus of the classic Metroid series with Team Ninja’s signature stylish, no-holds-barred action

Meh
I don't have much words for this game. Is like mixing Ninja Gaiden with a Metroid skin.
The combat works well and all, but there are a lot of bad decision, mostly in how Samus acts compared to what we all know about her. She just follows orders and doesn't use several weapons until the guy in command tells her she can.

Exploration is pretty much taken out completely from the game for a straight line of combat. Some common Metroid games concepts are thrown in, but it doesn't make up for what has been done wrong.

Hopefully next time Nintendo will keep a closer eye on the decisions external develpers take on their franchises.

No title
It's really rare to see Nintendo games get such production values, this game is, above all controversy, a mark in Nintendo's history and should be played by all Nintendo fans.

Nintendo had done it again!
MP other M is yet another great game to add to the metroid games series. The gameplay is different this time featuring side scrolling. It's is definitely a shooter but it has element of platforming too which makes the game all the more fun to play. Metroid Fans just cannot afford to

Fast Paced Metroid Game
Not many games in the Metroid series have such fast pacing. All the actions are fancy and speedy.
Though, storywise, the storytelling kind of lacked feeling. Might have been the voice acting, which wouldn't be surprising.
But gameplay matters more.

The best so far.
The game is excellent. Easy to learn but it is not easy to play. The phases are complex but catchy. The game puts you in the middle of the story and you feel participating in the same. Long ago I have not played a game so good. Recommend.

Different Kind of Metroid
I really like games that give an option to use a classic controller instead of using the Wii controller. Sometime you want to play games old school without the hectic and frantic movement. Although this game does not offer that option, it does not mean that the game does not deliver in the fun factor. Believe me it does bring hours of entertaining challenges. Get it now if you are a fan of Metroid series.

THe story and characters are dreadful but gameplay is simple and fun. much prefer 2d metroid to first person, but it really is an embarassing take on samus.

A great Metroid game
This is a great game in the Metroid series, were we can know more about Samu's past and his thoughts and feelings.

With such a great control and graphics, is a must-have for all Metroid fans.

A fresh take on Metroid
This is a quality game. Most of the neegative reviews are more concerned with what the games ISN'T. It is not a traditional Metroid game. This is an action game with more empahsis on story than previous Metroid titles. For the price it's worth checking out if you're at all interested in a unique action game for the wii so you can form your own opinion.

Ignore the story, enjoy the game
As far as gameplay is concerned, Other M cleverly works in 2D and 3D mechanics using the Wii Remote. This of course comes with its small set of issues, as is the case with every motion-based title. Outside of these small niggles, the gameplay is very enjoyable -- think 2.5D goodness with bits of 3D sprinkled.

The story though is horrendous. Not sure why Nintendo felt the need to tack a story, and then handle it in such a horrible way. Samus comes across as a whiny, emo character. Totally not the badass bounty hunter we have associated with her as. Hope they don't take this path for future entries.

Enjoyable.
First off, I had more fun playing Metroid Other M than I expected. I wasn't sure how Team Ninja would produce a Metroid game and I had heard some things I thought wouldn't work. Though some of the criticisms I had heard are justified, none are game breaking.

Bad news first, the story isn't particularly interesting, Samus is a wet blanket and I never cared for any of the characters. I still commend an attempt being made to do something different with Metroid, but so far the previous isolated and lonely exploits for Samus is when the series has shined narratively.

There are two gameplay niggles I have with the game. First of all, there are some occasions when you need to scan the environment in first person mode to find a clue or some other macguffin to push forward the story. The idea is not bad itself, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. At times the target reticle needs to be almost pixel perfect to register and it is not always clear what you are looking for. The worst happened quite early in the game, so I actually though it had crashed, but it turned out that I needed to be pointing at the green blood that was on a patch of green grass - silly me.

As you may have heard rockets are fired exclusively from first person, which can mean moving the pad from a horizontal position to pointing at the screen. This is fine when exploring, but in the middle of a boss fight, it never feels intuitive and spoils the immersion.

As I said earlier the faults were not game breaking for me. For the most part Other M is a delight. Rocket firing aside, the controls are much better than I thought, in fact I like them. Holding the remote like a NES pad gave the game a solid feel and it often captured the atmosphere of previous Metroid titles. The controls are fast and responsive and Team Ninja have incorporated a nice dodge feature that is more than an adequate substitute for the minimalist buttons the Wii remote has.

Presentation and graphics are top notch and special mention must go to the fact the Japanese version contains English voices and subtitles in addition to Japanese voice and subtitles, so you can play how ever you wish. The Japanese release also has a cool outside cardboard cover, so any old school collectors out there should get this edition.

BEST METROID YET!!! (^_^)
This game is amazing from the story to the graphics and game play. I saw nothing really wrong with it besides being a little short other than that this game is a solid 9 out of 10. The Japanese version is the better version to own since it has Japanese & English voices as well as the texts. A MUST BUY!!!

Improved
I was very disappointed with the previous trilogy, mainly because I hate FPS. Luckily Nintendo decided to bring the series back to its root, well sort of, where platforms reign supreme. Should get it if you are a Metroid fan.

It was fun.
Good game. I never liked Metroid, but a friend brought this over and I played it for a while. I decided to get this game from then.

Pros:
Good gameplay
Great graphics
Great sounds and atmospheres
3-D platformer
Can be played in English or Japanese

Cons:
Samus talks WAY too much
Samus goes into her past too much (doesn't seem to apply to the game)
The dreaded Wii remote controls

It's pretty
The best thing you could sat about this game is that it's pretty and the action really heats things up. I also find the characters rather appealing. Other than that, it's kinda short, the dialogue is never ending, and making the switch from third- person to first-person view is a pain. Definitely revolutionary for the Metroid franchise and it's certainly a game to have in your collection.

Overall a good metroid game.
The game is a comeback to what metroid was all about, the classic 2d action platform game. You will enjoy the game if you have enjoy the previous 2d style titles.

Great game despite a few minor flaws
This game has a very Super Metroid feel to it. The opening cut-scene felt really nostalgic! The large variety of interesting enemies and bosses is great. However, the first-person gameplay mode felt rather awkward to me. I feel the game would be better without it, especially the annoying "pixel hunts". This mode does nothing at all to increase the enjoyability of the gameplay, it is just irritating. But that's no reason not to get the game. Overall, it's another fun Metroid experience! Any fan of the series will like it, but not recommended for newbies.

Metroid 2.0
Metroid: Other M is a seriously enjoyable game for people who like exploration and platforming. Having played the first-person Metroid games, I actually prefer this third person version more. I know the first person Metroids have their fans, but I feel the exploration aspects of the game are better served with a third person perspective like Other M. It's simply easier to find your way around and look for hidden items when you have a good overview of the area. The control scheme, despite making some compromises, is actually remarkably usable even without the nunchuk. Overall, a great game for me -- I totally enjoyed it from beginning to end.

Metroid Other M
This is a great game! The gameplay is fairly simple, as are the controls, and it has a very interesting story.

I rather enjoyed how you didn't have to hunt out each ability upgrade like normal, but you simply got it activated as you went through the story (This is because it's a direct sequel to Super Metroid, and thus Samus still has all of her Upgrades; she's merely disabled them due to the situation in the story). It also wasn't hard to get used to things like wall-jumping, or using the first-person mode; actually, it was rather simple, good for beginners to this type!

The single criticism I can come up with is the level of ease caused by not needing to collect "energy balls" or "missile refills" to restore Energy or Missiles; you can restore all your missiles easily at any time, any place, and as long as you're careful, you can regenerate your Energy from critical levels as well. (In fact, you can take damage that reduces you to 00 energy, from which you can recover, before you will be killed. This doesn't apply to the Hard mode, though).

Also, it must be noted that there IS a glitch late in the game that will require starting a new game if encountered. (Red door glitch; only occurs in one place, under a certain, easily-avoided condition, and won't trigger after the door has been entered once. I encountered it myself my first time through.) Despite how famous this has become, it's easy to avoid by not going back to save stations all the time. Just keep moving on towards the next part of the story, and don't be afraid to rely on the Continue option. Since it usually doesn't take you back to your last save spot, but actually just a little back from where you died, you can progress fairly quickly even if you die often. (Which is also another thing that makes this game easier than any other Metroid game: you don't usually go as far back as the last save spot when you die.)

Also, the Japan-region version has both Japanese and English language audio and subtitles available. I'm not sure if the English one does though...

Anyway, as I said, I love this game, and think it was very well designed! I hope more people enjoy this game as well! (I also hope I didn't do a confusing review...)

Perfect, amazing comeback of metroid
This game as sakamoto said is the perfectly recreation of the firsts metroids, it brings the good historiy, the good objecty haunt, the good characters and the graphicas are really beautiful espeacially the cinematographic part that make the game be like a xbox or ps3 game.

Awesome, yet short
The game itself was unique, it's story line was deep and engrossing, the graphics are among the best for the wii and the gameplay is certainly intuitive. The only issue is the fact that such storyline ends quiet soon, less than 9h gameplay in my case and leaves you wanting more and he world is also perhaps too small. At the endgame you'll have to run around every area again to pick up every item you missed before, but that shouldn't be an issue for an old Metroid fan.

A good game, but quite flawed
It's hard to write about this game. The game is undoubtedly a good game. But as a Metroid game, it falls slightly short of expectations. The controls take some time to get used to and once you do, the game is almost over. And that's another of the game's problems - it's length. You can beat it at around 8 hours with 100%, and even though you can unlock hard mode, there's really no incentive to replay the game. Even if you wanted to play the game again for the story, they've taken care of that by letting you watch the whole game- cutscenes and gameplay video and all- as a 2 hour long movie after you've finished the game.

So yeah, a good game... but it's no Super Metroid or Metroid Prime.

metroid other m review
if i had to summarize this game in a few words, then i would choose: ninja samus on steroids...the combat is very satisfying and exploring the different areas of the game is very fun.......u constantly learn new abilities as u progress......boss battles are some of the best in the series.....the only downer would be that it is somewhat of a linear experience but other than that its a great metroid game that no fan of the series should miss

highly recommended

Not the Metroid I remember
I've been playing Metroid since the NES days and I will admit that I was a little worried about the move to first person in the Metroid Prime series, but I loved the innovations made in those games. It kept the spirit of Metroid, and moved forward. The prime games had heart. This game, not so much.

To be fair, if you aren't going in with expectations about what a Metroid game ought to be this isn't a bad game. But if you love the isolation, atmosphere, and subtle story telling of previous Metroid games be warned, you will not find those things here.

I could go on with a list of complaints I have about this game, but that would be unfair. The game isn't bad, it's just not what I was expecting as a long time Metroid fan. A newcomer to the series could really enjoy this title.

Awesome!!!
This game is very good! Gameplay is cool and diversificated, the transition of 2d to 3d contributes to fun and for the fans this game is the best game for Wii, in my opinion.

This is a direct sequence of the classic Super Metroid, SNES, and, don't let this pearl pass, play it now!

A hardcore Metroid fan loves this game, and things most anyone should
To not spoil much: don't expect too much nonlinear exploration. If that is what you are looking for in a Metroid game then Super Metroid and Zero Mission should be plenty for you.

What this game has is action, story, and a smoothness that gives one concise, complete, and very enjoyable experience.

Switching from 3rd person to 1st person if flawless, easy to do, and quite fun in combat once you get it down. Manipulating Samus and wreaking havok on the baddies is natural, rewarding, yet also challenging so that you find yourself improving. To me that is one of the most overlooked aspects that the Metroid series has established: player self improvement. Learning how to wall-kick, bomb-jump, and so on, is up to the player. You can basically do these tricks from the get go (in most Metroid games). Learning them and mastering them is improvement of the player, not something that is gained via item. Other M has this and has this well. However, not in the sense that you can explore better; in Other M you learn how to fight better. Upon replaying the game you are much better because you as a player have gained experience and ability. This game has definitely nailed that.

What I like most about this game is that I feel it really moved Metroid to the next level with it. Remember the feel of going from Metroid 1 to 2? The game was faster, you could do so much more, and the battles were more intense. Next comes Super Metroid blowing 1 and 2 out of the water. This new super speed running, Indiana Jones style swinging, massive bomb laying Samus put all others to rest. No other Metroid game has been able to touch that big of a change until now. In Other M Samus feels so much more devastating and in such a good way. The speed, action, and responsiveness really set a new bar for how bad-ass Samus can be. I still look forward to a good 2D platforming Metroid game, but this Samus will be the most butt whooping for some time I expect.

Hmm.
For an alternative take on the Metroid series, this title is certainly worth a look, I guess. Hasn't caught my interest as much as say the Prime series games, but it's pretty fun. And the Japanese version is indeed good, in that it features some pretty snazzy boxart / slip cover / manual illustrations, as well as having both the Japanese and English audio and overall in-game text.

Metroid Other M
This game blows your mind in almost every aspect. Gorgeous graphics, fast-paced action oriented gameplay but still with lots of exploration and the feeling of isolation and a deep look into the character of samus aran.

There are some small issues with the framerate at times though, but nothing too serious.

Team Ninja delivers
As a fan of the Ninja Gaiden games, this game satisfied that itch I’ve been having for a band new adventure with the Team Ninja style of action but also giving me something completely different. The only thing I will say is I wish there was more to this game, like the Missions mode from Ninja Gaiden. That would have given the game more replay value and would have made it perfect for me. But all in all it’s very well made and looks and sounds awesome on the Wii, fantastic production values.
