Zangeki no Reginleiv

Game and controls easy to learn even if you don't know Japanese. You will become familiar with the item shop, saving, loading, settings, etc... By memorising each function. The narrator is also helpful and you can clearly hear whether you are saving or not for example.

description
Engage is close range combat with your sword and shield, defeat your enemies from afar by magic. Nintendo has created a world based on Norse mythology, with monsters, fairies and other enchanting creatures, this is an action game you do not want to miss.

Join the guild and fight the collosal gods. The enemies are powerful and tricky to beat, the gameplay is challenging. Battles are going to be hard, but this only makes victory even sweeter.

Recruit like minded adventurers to enter the battle field with you. This is not just a button masher, draw arcs and and lines on the screen and execute these slashes.

There are numerous weapons you can play with, from swords, spears to bows and staffs. Determine what is best for your battlefield, build a well balanced band and go fight.

Great use of Motion Plus
One of the very few Wii games that utilizes the addt'l motion plus. The game is very fun as you slash your way against hordes of giants, even better if you have a friend to play co-op or online w/.

Great use of the wii motion sensor, the battle controls are so cool. Use magic, swords, and your bow to fend off hordes of giants. Graphics are great to. This game alone is worth importing a Japanese wii.

Great hack and slash!
I don't understand Japanese, so I'll start by telling you that is not important to enjoy this game. The menus will cause you some headaches until you are used to them, but they soon become second nature and there are some translations online if you do some homework.

The game is apparently based on Norse mythology, you play as either the God Frey or Freya (with the others members of the crazy, incestuous family appearing in cut scenes).

The game is composed of levels with a set number of enemies to kill; each level has 5 difficulty settings. In order to complete the game on every setting you will need to upgrade your characters health and purchase new weapons using the currency demons are good enough to leave lying around after dying.

The action is very satisfying and doesn't take long to get used to, though keeping the cursor pointed at the screen for melee attacks felt a little strange at first (as did using the bow and arrow). The game has loads of cartoon gore which I find to be not only entertaining, but a feature which adds some 'oomph' to attacks.
The game can also use the classic controller and the WiiMotion plus. I don’t have either, so I can’t comment whether or not it is better with those control methods – though I hope the WiiMotion plus is great! The good news is having the normal remote and nunchuck is a perfectly acceptable was to play this enjoyable old school game.
If you have a Wii gathering dust that can play Japanese games (I doubt this will be released anywhere else) and enjoy playing arcade style games, give Zangeki no Reginleiv a go.

Earth Defence Force vs. Greek Mythology
I was really looking forward to finally playing Sandlots newest incarnation of their "Gigantic Drive" engine. I absolutely loved their PS2 title "Chikyuu Boueigun 2" or "Global Defence Force" as it was called here in Europa. So I expected something similar.

And I got something very similar. It's almost like playing a mod for that PS2 game! The gameplay is nearly identically. You always have a certain area that gets swarmed with enemies you have to take out in order to progress. There are tons of weapons, just like in GDF, huge monsters and also allies that (try to) help you in your fight.

The controls work fairly well but what really bugs me is the somewhat awkward Classic Controller support. I was hoping I could play the game just like "Global Defence Force" but you can only move *the cursor* using the analog stick. So if you move it in the top right, your character doesn't look in that direction but instead the cursor moves to the upper right corner and *stays there* until you move it somewhere else. This results in your character "spinning" in this direction.
Even if you set the "dead zone" to a minimum, the problem still remains.

You see, it's no problem using the Wii remote - you just points somewhere else then. But using the Classic Controller really needs getting used to. On the other hand, actions like using the bow, stabbing a lance or dashing forward work a lot better with the CC.

So this game would have been a clear 5 stars if it wasn't for those smaller controll issues. And a little variety in gameplay would have been nice. It's still the exact same formular like the first "Chikyuu Boueigun" / "Monster Attack" / "Earth Defence Force" and that game came out way back in 2003!

But if you like Sandlot games (like I do) then you'll also like Zangeki no Reginleiv. It's just not that UBER-game everybody was hoping for ;)

Zangeki no Reginleiv
Game and controls easy to learn even if you don't know Japanese. You will become familiar with the item shop, saving, loading, settings, etc... By memorising each function. The narrator is also helpful and you can clearly hear whether you are saving or not for example.

Gameplay is intuitive and you swing Wiimote to defeat enemies. Male warrior can use sword, 2-handed sword, polearm, giant hammer and bow. Female can use magic wands, small swords and powerful magic bows.

The bad part is that game is partly buggy. For example, sometimes after clearing entire area, it takes 20 seconds for 'Clear' to be visible. A very bad gameplay flaw is that you can't finish certain stages, if you don't have the correct weapon (on stage 23 there are multiple flying boss enemies, and you can't kill them unless you are wielding a magic bow), but instead, you'd have to forfeit all current crystals/artifacts and return back to menu to switch.

Nunchuck is also sometimes very unresponsive. In the worst case, during heated battle, character will not dodge or leap forward at all when you dash nunchuck, and you lose health/die.

Good part is, it's fun. There is loads to do. Cutscenes are well rendered, the worlds are very large, environments are destructable, there is a load of stages (in some stages you can only play as male/female). CPU villagers actively aid you in battle. Buying new weapons almost always results in unlocking 1 to 3 new ones. You can replay stages as many times as you want, and set difficulty level each time.
