In Wonder, Lust & Itchy Feet an intelligent and eager woman—daughter, lover, mother and wife—collects for the first time a selection of poetry from her first four decades of life. Unhesitatingly she exposes her feelings about intimate and family relationships and clearly expresses the loving and supportive values that she hopes societies can live by. There is disappointment and rebellion here; but also wisdom. There is love, pain, regret, hope; a desire to love and live to the full, to find life's joy, for tomorrow we die; a felt and generous understanding that a new generation will take our place, live and love in their turn. The simple language belies frequent sophistication of structure, delightful and meaningful word-play and entertaining rhyme. There is a wide range of reference garnered from rich experience of life and travel in many cultures and countries. Sally Dellow has a highly intelligent understanding of the right words and concepts to express, and communicate effectively, deep-felt universal experiences in a highly personal way. Among the many striking and strong poems in this collection, ‘Sand’ is one that has the resonance of a modern classic.

"The Village in the Mountains" is set in a fictional, southern European country. After a brief period of democratic reform, the nationhas once again become a totalitarian state. The narrator of the book -- a left-wing poet from a prominent family -- is exiled to a village in the high mountains near the country's border. Against this mountainous backdrop, an intense psychological drama is played out between the poet and the people with whom he comes into contact, compelling him to make a decision that will change his life forever.

The narrator of Tightrope, an extraordinary, curiously intellectual small girl, undertakes the demanding and costly burden of comprehending the world. Her father – a peculiar leftist intellectual, and her mother, a neurotic actress, belonging to an old farming family – are more or less social outcasts, who fight for survival. The situation prevailing in Socialist Eastern Europe in the period after the Second World War – setting and inherent part of the fabric of this tale – produces incidents which are funny, cruel, and absurd, eliciting both laughter and compassion.

THE CHINESE OF MACAU A DECADE AFTER THE HANDOVER is an important contribution to the study of identity, a fundamental topic in the twenty-first as in the latter part of the twentieth century. Identity in Macau is studied not only from a local Chinese perspective but also from a Macanese viewpoint.

Society, culture and religion among the Chinese of Macau – and in particular the roles played by various Macau social, cultural and religious associations – are each studied in the context of economic circumstances.

Much of the variety in Of Symbols Misused is touched by man's existential dilemma as a self-conscious being obliged to live his sunniest moments in the shadow of death and construct meaning in the maw of absurdity. Engaging with this dilemma, Newton shows an exultance with words and a commitment to exploring the elucidations and complications engendered by words as the primary tools of man's sometimes puny, sometimes magnificent, efforts to tell a story about himself.

THE SHINGLE BAR SEA MONSTER AND OTHER STORIES uses surrealism and black humour to explore human predicaments, emotions and aspirations, and to suggest solutions to life's challenges. The situations are extraordinary, the aspirations and emotions are common, and the solutions debatable. A young woman is taken to a sea monster's underwater palace and helps the mermaids preserve seaweed. A girl finds that her right hand can no longer feel. Another girl becomes her younger sister's guardian angel. Two men of different tastes and habits struggle to co-exist after the head of one is grafted to the body of the other. An executive experiences uncontrollable anger after undergoing open-brain surgery. Two sisters continue their childhood rivalry after being reminded of a favourite TV programme. A male scientist is forced to give up the child that he himself gave birth to. On the verge of burnout, a jadedLondon lawyer heads out to theMojave desert to set up a new life for herself. Ghosts visit two sisters. A girl hears her dead grandmother speak. A modern day Lady Bluebeard lures men to grisly deaths, but adores her seventh husband and cannot bring herself to kill him. A young woman defends her passion for writing. A blind man in love carries a magical cane that makes flowers bloom on the pavement. An amnesiac builds a new life for himself. During the progress of a new relationship, secrets are revealed. A wife suspects her husband of having an affair with a group of mannequins. A woman flies to New Zealand to begin a new life as a romance novelist. Another woman buys a lighthouse through the encouragement of a friend. A schoolboy learns to levitate and is stoned and drowned by jealous classmates. A man finds the button for rewinding his life. Conjoined twins learn to survive and even thrive in the world. The purchase of a duvet leads to estrangement between an established couple, caused by the woman's extraordinary metamorphosis into a feathered winged creature. Always interesting, these stories – with their often bizarre realities – prompt us to see our own lives from the perspective of others. Do we also live in a somewhat off-centre world?

The poems in SHADOW PLAY were written during the five year period since James Norcliffe's last collection, Villon in Millerton (Auckland University Press, 2007). Norcliffe professes himself not to be a confessional poet; nevertheless he freely acknowledges that places and people served as prompts for the poems. New Zealand based, Norcliffe is well-travelled and his poems have international resonance. Placing Shadow Play with one other poetry collection as a finalist for the annual international Proverse Prize in 2011, the judging panel (reviewing entries with no knowledge of the writers) found an expert hand behind a wide variety of well-wrought poems on a range of topics, pleasingly interwoven with literary allusions.

SEMPER FI gives a portrait of a young man and his experiences as an enlisted member of the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Orville Clubb begins at the beginning with his earliest memories and tells the story right through to his discharge after serving overseas. Born into a poor family brought together by World War II, the writer grew to maturity as a young Marine. As with many young men of this era of similar socioeconomic status, joining the military as an enlisted man was an attractive option that offered a new start of life.

REVENGE FROM BEYOND is a gripping detective story set in Ancient China. It has a full cast of personalities and a mixture of motivations: a beautiful widow, an upright but inexperienced magistrate, a disaffected son, an advisor to the Emperor, and an active group of towns-people anxious to make their living in peace. It includes authentic details of ancient laws, court practices and judicial punishments. The "Author of Revenge From Beyond" freely acknowledges his debt to the late Robert Van Gulik, the author of many detective novels with a Chinese background. Dennis Wong's book, however, stands on its own, supported by a strong plot and good characterization.—Proverse Prize Judges Struggling against his own inexperience as a judge, the protagonist, Judge Quan, succeeds in solving a very difficult case, involving an attractive (and hostile) widow and the son of the Chinese Emperor's principal adviser. The judge's work is made particularly difficult by the prejudices of the local population.

In this novel, set in contemporary Hong Kong and Japan, with flashbacks to the Second World War, a Japanese businessman takes a deliberately modest revenge against another Japanese family that damaged his own during the Second World War. His surprising act of terrorism is a paradoxical gesture for peace.

Refrain recounts the author's travels in India as an inexperienced and sensitive young man. The narrative shows wit, intelligence and a facility with words. The style is experimental and literary; and the fascination of the stories told – short stories in verse presenting the anxieties and misfortunes typical of shoestring traveling, and the culture-shock deriving from visiting a very different culture from ones own – carries the careful reader along. A knack for reading this less-than-conventional fast-paced book, which is at once humorous and nightmarish, passionate and detached, is acquired quickly.

Dr. Bickley's series of graded poetry anthologies - POEMS TO ENJOY - is a well-established tool for learning and teaching English at all levels. The five books are each accompanied by an audio recording of poems in the book. The recordings assist pronunciation and help those preparing for solo verse speaking and reading, duo and group-work and choral-speaking in Speech Festivals. They also enhance reading experience. Useful notes and a teaching guide are also included.

PERCEPTIONS consists of short pieces, poetry or poem-like essays, written over a period of thirty years, on various serious and reflective topics, but with some humorous and occasional work too. As in Gillian Bickley's previous collections, the subjects occur internationally: this time, in the Pyrenees, Nigeria, Hawaii, Albania, as well as Hong Kong. Taken as a whole, this fifth poetry collection recognizes the need for shelter and survival, the desire for love, for achievement, for feelings of self-worth, for objects on which to bestow reciprocal affection and the search for high-order achievements beyond the self. Reaching beyond this, Perceptions considers the needs of other species, our responsibilities towards them and the fragile environment that we all share.

PARANOIA (The Walk and Talk with Angela) shows a man of solitary habits and a background of family disruption and multiple relationships. Disturbed by his girlfriend, Angela, who calls him "oblivious", he reflects on his past life, focusing on many people and topics that he previously ignored. He acknowledges his faults and selfishness, and finds cause to give thanks to all who have played any part in his life, including mother earth and the universe itself. It is through the mea culpa of his narrative that a picture emerges of his past empty and unhappy life. Gradually, this becomes intertwined with unusual events in his present life, meetings with new acquaintances and their stories, and a high-minded plot to expose and frustrate the alleged war-mongering plans of North Korea and end the screams of torture victims in "the camps".
