Fushigi no Dungeon 2: Furai no Shiren DS (call it Shiren the Wanderer) is a Japanese-styled roguelike, in the vein of Nethack, Ancient Domains of Mystery (ADoM), or Moria. You, the player, play a young man in a rain hat named Shiren, who is one a quest for the Golden Condor. Something like that. You're not going to get it because odds are you do not actually speak Japanese. On the surface, the game appears to be a typical action-RPG; its appearance belies its turn-based nature. You cruise through various randomly-generated dungeons, slaying a large variety of increasingly difficult enemies that will stop at nothing to kill you. Status effects play a very large role throughout Shiren's adventures, and a keen understanding of what every item does and how it effects you and your adversaries is more important to success than high attack stats and a boatload of HP. When you are in a dungeon, every move you make, item you use, and every thrust of your sword uses up one turn, and -- thankfully -- your enemies are also bound by this rule. Because of this, every one of your button presses (or stylus taps, if you're into it) has significance.
You will die. A lot. And every time Shiren is slain, you must start the adventure over from the beginning, having lost any of the levels gained and items acquired. Fortunately, you can save anywhere, and store your important or useful items in a warehouse that stays with you no matter how many times you perish in the wilderness. Every time you die, your adventure will be recorded in the town ledger, like a high score table in any old arcade game. What's interesting about this is that you get to watch a recording of how you died, and form strategies based on what you observed. Then, you start over again.

D2 marks Warp's first foray into sequel territory -- and their first attempt at a purely real-time game outside of the obscure 3DO game, Trip'd. D2 is not a direct sequel to the first game (D) in the series, but it does share many of its idiosyncratic elements. First off, and most recognizably, the game stars the blonde "digital actress," Laura, heroine of previous Warp adventures. Kenji Eno, Warp's rotund ringmaster, has stated that D2's main theme is "snow." You'll be seeing an awful lot of it as you traverse the wilds of Canada, hunting animals for sustenance, and taking part in what could only be called a "Survival Horror/RPG." While you do engage in random scuffles with nasty monsters, the combat system is much more action-oriented, with Laura popping and reloading her Uzi from a first-person perspective. Sega's censors frowned at the game, and some of its more questionable moments have been cut for the U.S. release. That means American gamers can't take pleasure in some of the decidedly nasty things that happen to the game's characters, mostly involving extremely naughty tentacles.

The evil empire is rushing at light-speed across the galaxies, heading towards Mother Earth. Barely 24 hours ago, they penetrated the last defense line of our galaxy, the Arsion Laser Belt. Millions of innocent people perished in outer space colonies. 70% of our fleet was destroyed during first contact. Our intelligence has now extrapolated their arrival within six days. Conventional weapons cannot stop them. Our last hope is in your hands: The Z-42 Warpstar. Warp into their territories and destroy their leader before they reach Earth.
Last Hope is a shooting game with rotating satellite system and heavy influence by tactical game play. Memorizing level architecture and enemy patterns are necessary for further approaching. The satellite and the beam are the most important components of the game mechanics. You have to learn to deal with both techniques in interaction with the other. It is possible to rotate the protection unit in 360° around the playership and to engage it in 8 gradations. Just press "A" to shoot, "R-Trigger" to rotate clockwise and "L-Trigger" to rotate anticlockwise.
The protection unit mainly serves the defense of enemy plasma projectiles and to fire a stronger plasma shot. There are four difficulty settings: very easy, easy, normal and hard. Less experienced players can enjoy the game on very easy and easy, while experienced players will enjoy the game on normal or challenging it on hard. There are a total of 6 stages. These vary from a sandily space laboratory, a channel fulfilled with muddy water, a idyllic landscape with floating continents, a soul melting enemy factory on fire to an eerily and muggy alien stage.
Last Hope is comparable to classics like R-Type and Gradius. Yet it has it's own visual impressive graphic style and fresh game play. It also features a superb 16-bit digital audio soundtrack, which suits perfectly the games atmosphere.
Exclusive features only available in the Dreamcast™ compatible version:

16-bit CD soundtrack

VMU support (saving + visuals)

DC joypad + arcade stick support (R- and L-trigger support)

Use of DCs soundchips (64 channels/stereo)

Exclusive Dreamcast™ Game Modes:

Adjusted difficulty (Reduction of shoot frequency and flight velocity of enemy bullets / no rank)

Explosions / particle effects reduced for more clarity on screen

Better hitting response for hit enemies

Improved visualization of boss hit zones
