He attends a support group with his mother (Kathy Bates) for murder victims' families. There he meets a beautiful widow life Linda (Michelle Pfeiffer) and her troubled, teenaged son, Clay, who is also a deaf mute. Clay is always teased by other kids, one day he reaches his limit and is about to shoot his bullies. Walter is able to seize the gun in time, he takes Clay under his wings and begins teaching him wrestling as an outlet to his anger. They have a hobby in common to keep them close. Meanwhile, Walter and Linda being to bond over their loneliness and a romance slowly blooms.
