Takashi Ishii Love Triangle!
Masatoshi Nagase plays a young drifter named Makoto who just happens to bump into Nami (Shinobu Otake) outside of a train station literally. He accidentally hits her with his suitcase while trying to shield himself from heavy falling rains. She shrugs it off and goes on her way not realizing that Makoto has fallen madly in love with her at first sight. He follows her back to the city where she works at a real estate firm part time for her Boss and Husband Hideki (Hideo Murota) as his secretary. Makoto asks the Boss to work for the firm and proceeds to sell real estate to clients looking for expensive apartments and houses. He works closely with the two of them but is all the time secretly in love with the Nami and waiting for the moment to become romantically involved with her. It finally happens one rainy day when the Boss sends Nami to look for Makoto at the new flat they are selling when he can not be found by telephone or his beeper. Here the story really heats up as two meet each other at the flat and start a steamy love affair. The relationship becomes very physical and they cannot go without seeing each other for more than a couple of hours without having a incandescent encounter. The whole situation blows up in their faces though when there is a company retreat at a fancy Hotel and Hideki catches the two of them taking a bath together in the sauna area. Furious Hideki fires Makoto after some violence towards him and then forbids Nami to ever see him again. This is not the end of the affair as the two continue to meet each other off and on but are always caught by the jealous Hideki. It finally comes down to a planned murder in a Hotel room on a rainy night by faking a robbery resulting in the killing of the Husband and beating of his Wife to make it look real. Of course things do not go exactly as planned.
This is a really crazy movie and has all the elements of a Takashi Ishii film. The way he uses the heavy falling rains to symbolize whenever something crucial is going to happen in the story or the way he directs the camera and uses strange angles to keep the audience unaware of what is exactly happening. The story itself is pretty common but the way he writes it it becomes very human as even the characters themselves are emotionally unsure of what they really want. Makoto likes the Boss but will do anything to be with his wife even killing him so that she is his only. Nami does not want anyone hurt because she is in love with Makoto and Hideki but does not understand why she can't be with both men. Hideki feels betrayed by his Wife but is still deeply in love with her and will do anything to keep Nami by his side even if it means having to kill both her and Makoto. Of course it all unfolds at the end with the Hotel room sequence erupting in a sea of violence and the result of only one man being triumphant.
I give this movie 5 stars as I was very interested in the characters and sucked into their story greatly. Of course I am a fan of any Takashi Ishii film and enjoy all of his works. The dvd itself is quite good and has widescreen format with excellent English subtitles. As far as extras there is only a couple of trailers for the film.
Highly recommended!
