A beautiful arrangement
A longtime fan of the Koichi Sugiyama's music, I was expecting a lot from this new suite. I was not let down in the least. First off, the quality of the sound is crisp and clear. I felt like I was in the room while they were recording the music. The arrangements themselves were very well done. I was surprised in the way some of the orchestrated versions played out in comparison to the synthesized version and felt that the arrangements far outdid anything that appeared on the actual game version.

The town music is beautiful, peaceful, an aural treat. The battle theme is exciting and sweeping, one of my favorites in the Dragon Quest series so far (the strings on this piece stand out). I also thought that repeated use of themes in the previous soundtracks was a bit lacking, most of the themes appearing only once but, in the Dragon Quest IX suite, there are a few themes (Heavenly Place, Buildup to Victory, Gathering Place), that were woven into more than one piece of the soundtrack. I thought this was a pleasant and musically rewarding touch.

All in all, if you've played any of the Dragon Quest games, listened to any of the music, or just enjoy good orchestra in general, this is definitely worth the money.
