descriptionLuis Buñuel s final film explodes with eroticism, bringing full circle the director lifelong preoccupation with the darker side of desire. Mathieu (Fernando Rey), a middle-aged gentleman suddenly pours a bucket of water over a young girlhead at a train station of Seville, Spain. He then explains to his fellow coach-cabin passengers, who witnessed his rude act, the story of his tumultuous relationship with this young lady. Mathieusexual impulses are ignited at his first sight of Conchita (played alternately by Carole Bouquet & Ángela Molina), a 18-year-old girl who claims to preserve her virginity until marriage. She then disappears without a word. Mathieu meets her again soon and gives her poor mother a bunch of money, asking her to convince her daughter. The rebellious Conchita vanishes the next day with only a letter left, warning Mathieu not to buy her with money. Not long, Mathieu encounters her again and the two reconcile. Conchita wears a tight lace-trim corset to avoid the intercourse with Mathieu and keeps a young guy in her room. The furious Mathieu exiles Conhita and her mother out of France with his political power. Later, he discovers her in Seville. Conchita continues to seduce Mathieu without letting him satisfy his sexual desire for her. With Terrorists ' bombs in the background, Mathieu s obsessed lust towards Conchita gradually turns into hatred and violence. The repeated break ups and reunions of this opposed couple, as every pair of man and woman, seems to be endless and helpless. Drawn from Pierre Louÿs 1898 novel, La Femme et le Pantin,Cet Obscur Objet Du Désir is a dizzying game of sexual politics punctuated by a terror that harkens back to Buñuel s brilliant surrealistic beginnings.
