Item Description

Taking place on the same continent as the fan favorite Trails in the Sky offshoot of Nihon Falcom's storied The Legend of Heroes franchise, Trails of Cold Steel (Sen no Kiseki in Japanese) is the first in the series to tread Erebonian soil and explore the inner political conflicts of this oft-mentioned powerhouse nation in detail. With a standalone story that also delves into the expansive lore that has become synonymous with the series, players can enjoy school life and bond with fellow students to earn new abilities in battle, take advantage of speedy, tactical turn-based combat with the newly-developed "ARCUS" system, and take part in dramatic events that stand to shift the balance of power between Erebonia's feuding nobility and commoners.

A long game but an utterly AMAZING one
Ok. Finished Trails of Cold Steel. What a goddamn ride from start to finish and there's still Cold Steel 2 coming out in a few months. The story started out with a bang and then went on to tell the events of the past. Some bits were a tad cliched but they worked out wonderfully in the end. Everything felt natural and didn't seem forced with developments or characterization. The enemies were delightfully varied though there were a few palette swaps but posed enough of a challenge that I saw a Game Over screen more than once.

The voice work and music were amazing as well. I am going to buy the soundtrack and get the songs I don't have because the music is just such a great part of the atmosphere. Everything is just amazing and I hope the sequel delivers on this front as well.

Graphically it looks amazing. Only very slight frame rate drops near the middle and end but that's due to the events. Incredible animation of the attacks, Arts, Crafts and S Crafts as well. Character design is amazing as well and there's just enough variation in the NPCs to make them all look unique. That boss battle at the end of the Old Schoolhouse on the Final Chapter though...that made me amazed at how much processing power is actually packed in the Vita.

Locations are also very well designed from Heimdallr to Celdic and the gothic majesty of Lohengrin Castle in Legram. Thors Academy and Trista aren't too shabby either but they're (IMO) kinda generic compared to Roer or even the vast plains of Nord.

I wholeheartedly recommend this game to everyone remotely interested in JRPGs, story enthusiasts, and games that take more than 72 hours to complete (75 hours for me, minus most of the fishing, book and item set side quests).
