Grand and Beautiful
KLAUS BADELT – the promise

Just arrived today by play-asia.com in a beautifully photographed, exciting package and I’ve already listened to the score several times. It’s gorgeous, really, albeit slightly unoriginal. In fact, if Shigeru Umebayashi or Tan Dun collaborated with Jerry Goldsmith sometime in the past on a film of a similar theme, this is what their score would sound like! Add to this some discreet Hans Zimmer influences from the LAST SAMURAI and you get the picture. However it is not a copy-paste work in any way. I bought it instantly and even before listening to anything from it but I don’t regret it at all, it’s a well-worked score. The promise is grand, orchestral with crystal-clear sound, huge choir and fresh, imaginative ethnic vocals, compelling violin and Di Zi Flutes solos, memorable sweeping themes, awe-inspiring action cues and an overall elegant sound. Classy work, I love it. Way to go Badelt, I didn’t expect it to be so good to tell you the truth but I am happy for his effort mainly for two reasons: for Badelt who seems to be finally moving away from the Media Ventures’ typical (like Harry Gregson Williams had to do in order to succeed) and also seems to be in a good way of gaining a fresh musical identity of his own. Over that, I am finally happy ‘cause Badelt bashers can easily shut their mouths now.
